Your tailor-made holiday will be as unique as you are. These itineraries are just a starting point, a bit of inspiration to show what’s possible. Your own trip all starts with a conversation with one of our Peru experts, who’ll take the time to understand what matters most to you and design the perfect holiday to match.
We love Peru for family holidays. With its mix of history, colourful and unique traditional Andean communities, and great fun active adventures, it’s a destination the whole family will fall in love with. We’ve made sure this family holiday idea is packed full of culture, nature, activities to keep the whole family engaged and a few quirky excursions to shake things up a bit. Of course, you’ll visit the must-see Machu Picchu, with stays in Cusco and cosmopolitan Lima. But, we’ve also included a few exciting twists to appeal to the younger explorer and grownups alike; the mystical waters of Lake Titicaca and the curious floating reed islands; spotting swooping condors over the jagged Colca Canyon and exploring the explosion of colour at the local market in Chinchero. If you have a bit longer for your travels, let us know, we’d love to add on a wild stay in an Amazon rainforest lodge for a few days. It’ll add a wild layer of discovery to an already unforgettable family holiday.
Here's a summary of what you might get up to day-to-day on this Peru holiday. As always, this is just an idea. Every single day of your trip will be tailored to suit you.
Your Peru adventure begins today with an overnight flight to Lima. For the most part, we find night flights suit our clients best, especially those travelling with families, but we'll be sure to work together to find the best flight options for you.
After a, hopefully, relaxing flight, you and your family will land in Lima today, Peru’s bustling capital on the Pacific coast. You’ll be met by our friendly team on the ground and whisked off to your family-friendly hotel in the city. On the way, your guide will give you a bit of an overview of the city to help you make the most of your time in the city. With everything from historical sites to colourful local spots and some of the best restaurants in South America, there’s plenty to enjoy here.
This morning, you’ll head off on a tour of Lima’s historic heart. Your guide will lead you around the most important parts of the city, from the grand cathedral and Aliaga’s house, to the Larco Museum, teaching you all about Peru’s colonial past as you go. Younger kids will love all of the ancient artefacts, while teens can get lost in the stories behind each unique piece. We’ve left the afternoon free for you to explore at your own pace. If we were you, we’d be dragging the family off to try the local churros or a frothy Inca Kola at a nearby local cafe.
There’s an early start waiting this morning, as you head off to the airport to hop on a domestic flight to Peru’s beautiful ‘White City’, Arequipa. You’ll be spending the next couple of nights here, so check in and take an hour or so to relax before heading out to explore the cobbled streets.
Today, meet your private guide for a tour of Arequipa’s highlights, including the fascinating Santa Catalina Monastery with its maze-like passageways and vibrant courtyards. The city’s more than walkable, making it an ideal place for families to explore. With plenty of chances to pause for photos, grab a snack or two, or simply marvel at Arequipa’s distinctive white volcanic stone architecture.
Today, you’ll leave Arequipa behind and journey overland to the impressive Colca Valley. The journey itself is spectacular, as you pass through gorgeous terraced landscapes and traditional villages, keep your eyes peeled for herds of llamas, alpacas, and wild vicuñas grazing in the highlands – a great photo opportunity for animal-loving kids. Before long, you’ll arrive at your hotel, the perfect spot to relax and take in your beautiful surroundings.
You've got a birdwatching experience like no other today. Your guide will pick you up and whisk you off to Condor’s Cross, the perfect spot to take in the most phenomenal view over the dramatic Colca Canyon. The scenery is spectacular enough alone, but it won’t be long before enormous condors glide through the air, riding the thermals as they swoop and soar overhead. The guides are brilliant at knowing exactly where and when they’ll glide past, knowing their movements and habits so well. Later this afternoon, you’ll journey on to Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake, where you’ll stay for the next two nights.
Today, you’ll head off on a family-friendly adventure around Lake Titicaca’s mysterious waters. A highlight will definitely be a visit to the famous floating reed islands of the Uros people. You’ll meet the locals and have the chance to learn about their unique way of life. Next up, you’ll continue on to Taquile Island, where you’ll meet traditional weaving communities, learn all about this age-old craft and get a real taste of what authentic Peruvian life is like on the lakeside.
You’ll hop on a guided tourist coach to Cusco today, making plenty of stops along the way to break up the journey. Crucial for little travellers to stretch their legs and burn off a bit of energy! Before too long, you’ll arrive in Cusco, a city that’s simply bursting with history, charm and culture.
Meet your private guide today for a half-day tour of the impressive city of Cusco, taking in all the highlights. You’ll visit its impressive cathedral and Coricancha, the most important temple in the Inca Empire. This is a great way to orient yourself and make sure you don’t miss any key attractions in the historic centre. This afternoon, there are plenty of options for additional adventures. Try your hand at pottery making at a local workshop, or indulge in a tasty experience at a chocolate-making class. Both are great options for hands-on family fun, with memory-making guaranteed!
Today, you'll hop on the train for a spectacular journey up through the mountains towards the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu. When you reach the end of the track, you’ll jump off the train and onto a shuttle bus with your local guide, winding your way around the narrow roads towards this Incan treasure. The guides we use are absolutely brilliant here, they will effortlessly bring the history and mysteries of Machu Picchu to life, entertaining even the most discerning of kids. You’ll explore together, seeking out the spots away from the crowds and snapping family photos that you’ll treasure forever. After an exciting day, it’s time to head back to the local town where you’ll spend the night before more exploring tomorrow.
Because one visit would never be enough, today you’ll have tickets for a second entry to Machu Picchu. Explore at your own pace and climb Huayna Picchu this morning for spectacular bird's-eye views over the Incan city. You’ll return to Urubamba in the Sacred Valley by train in the afternoon, where you’ll stay for the next two nights.
For your last full day in Peru, we’ve made it a good one. You’ll explore some of the most memorable spots in the Sacred Valley, soaking up all of the colours, cultures and smiles that make this region so special. Head to the local market at Chinchero, one of the most colourful in the Andes. It feels somewhat more authentic than the better-known Pisac Market, and we love that. It’s the perfect spot to stock up on souvenirs and gifts before you fly home. You’ll then continue on to the impressive Inca fortress at Ollantaytambo, hearing tales of ancient battles whilst you explore the incredible stonework. Tuck into a family lunch in the valley before heading back to your hotel for one final night.
Your Peru family holiday comes to an end today as it’s time to head to the airport for your overnight flight home via Lima. After so many days packed full of exploration, learning and family memory-making, you’ll leave Peru with countless stories to share and tales to reminisce about around the dining table at home.
