Your tailor-made holiday will be as unique as you are. These itineraries are just a starting point, a bit of inspiration to show what’s possible. Your own trip all starts with a conversation with one of our Peru and Galapagos experts, who’ll take the time to understand what matters most to you and design the perfect holiday to match.
Without doubt, Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands are two of the most impressive destinations in the world. On this Peru and Galapagos holiday idea, you’ll be exploring one of the most mysterious ancient empires, before cruising around islands so rich with wildlife, you won’t know where to look. We’ve designed this holiday to include a balance of modern cities, spectacular scenery and archaeological wonders, all before taking to the waves for what will undoubtedly be a highlight: a 7-day cruise around the Galapagos archipelago.
In between the two undeniable highlights, you’ll have the time to sample the delicious food scene in Lima, stroll through Cusco’s cobbled streets, explore the rural communities nestled in the Sacred Valley and uncover the charms of Ecuador’s capital city, Quito. This is a bucket-list-ticking, pinch-yourself worthy adventure taking you from Incan ruins all the way to one of the most prized wildlife-watching destinations in the world. But, as always, this is just a suggestion of what’s possible. Lou and Dawn know Peru and the Galapagos back to front, so they’ll be sure to design a holiday that’s perfect for you.
Here's a summary of what you might get up to day-to-day on this Peru and Galapagos holiday. As always, this is just an idea. Every single day of your trip will be tailored to suit you.
Your Peru and Galapagos adventure begins today with an overnight flight to Lima. For the most part, we find night flights suit our clients best, but we'll be sure to work together to find the best flight options for you.
After your long flight, our wonderful team on the ground will be ready to welcome you with a massive smile and plenty of insider insights into Lima’s vibrant culture, unique neighbourhoods and delicious food. Check into your hotel and take some time to recuperate from the journey, before heading out to explore the city.
Along with your local guide, today you’ll delve deep into Lima’s rich past on a tour around the city. You’ll wander through baroque churches and colonial mansions as you explore the gems of the UNESCO-listed historic centre. Beyond the city streets, you’ll explore the coastal suburbs with their views over the Pacific Ocean. Lima’s food scene is arguably one of the best in the whole of South America, so be sure to grab a plate of fresh ceviche while you’re here. We’re massive foodies here at HA, so do chat to us if you’d like some restaurant recommendations!
You’ll hop on a short flight to Cusco today, where your guide will be waiting to whisk you off to the beautiful Old Town. Spend the afternoon settling in before heading out to explore the city at your own pace. With plenty of pretty plazas, boutiques and restaurants lining the streets, it’s the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere and adjust to the higher altitude!
Today, join your brilliant local guide on an in-depth tour around Cusco’s winding streets and charming squares. You’ll learn all about the city’s unique blend of Incan and Spanish colonial history before exploring the grand cathedral and Coricancha, the Temple of the Sun. Before you say goodbye, your guide will lead you up into the hills to see the impressive Inca ruins and age-old stone walls perched above the city.
We’ve left today clear for you to slow down the pace, soak up the atmosphere and explore the city at your own pace. Cusco is a wonderfully laid-back city, packed full of art galleries, small museums tucked away in old mansions, artisan craft stores, chic cafes and some truly innovative dining experiences. Of course, if you want recommendations on where to head, just ask.
The first highlight of this Peru and Galapagos holiday is ready and waiting for you today. You’ll leave Cusco behind and head through the Sacred Valley. After a quick stop off at the Incan fortress in Ollantaytambo, it’s time to ride the train and bus into the mountains. At the end of the journey, the spectacular Inca citadel of Machu Picchu will be ready to welcome you. Set amongst the staggering beauty of the Andes, you’ll have seen plenty of photographs of this World Wonder over the years – but nothing will compare to seeing it with your own eyes. You’ll explore the ancient terraces with your guide, who will expertly navigate the crowds, finding you quieter stops and bringing the citadel to life with history and stories. Tonight you’ll spend the night in a quaint hotel in a small town nearby.
We’ll make sure you have tickets for a second entry to Machu Picchu today, to take the time to explore by yourselves. If you’ve got the energy, you might choose to climb Huayna Picchu, where you’ll be treated to a bird's-eye view over the Incan city. After you’ve filled your camera roll with treasured moments, you’ll hop back on the train to the Sacred Valley this afternoon and check into your hotel for the next two nights.
Enjoy a free day in the beautiful Sacred Valley today. This region offers an amazing diversity of experiences: hike to remote Inca sites, kayak on mountain lakes, visit colourful village markets, or explore local communities to see traditional craft-making in action. Chat to us and we’ll be sure to suggest activities best suited to you, that’ll give you the most authentic taste of valley life.
Today, the next stage of your big adventure kicks off. You’ll head to Cusco airport for your flight to Quito, your gateway to the Galapagos, via Lima. Our smiling member of our friendly team will be there to meet you before driving you into Quito, a beautiful city with a spring-like climate all year-round, thanks to its altitude. Settle into your city hotel before heading out to uncover the charms of Ecuador's UNESCO World Heritage-listed capital.
You’ll meet your guide this morning to explore Quito’s beautifully preserved historic centre. Everywhere you look, elegant colonial architecture will meet plazas bustling with modern life. Take in the views over the city from Panecillo Hill before heading just outside the city for another bucket-list worthy experience: standing over the Equator line. Quito’s history, lively markets and beautiful streets are the perfect spot to get excited about the wild adventure that kicks off in the morning.
Today is one of those days you’ll never forget. As you fly from Quito to the incomparable Galapagos Islands, prepare yourself for seven days of cruising between volcanic landscapes and wildlife wonders. You’ll join your small expedition cruise, boarding the boat that’ll be your home for the next few days. And what a few days it’ll be… With daily landings and plenty of guided excursions, you’re about to embark on one of the world’s most remarkable wildlife journeys.
Over the next week, you'll sail from one island to the next. Every day is different, with the opportunity to disembark each morning and afternoon at a different landing point. Your naturalist guide will always be on hand to explain what remarkable species you can expect to see.
From sunbathing sea lions, to vivid marine iguanas, and dancing blue-footed boobies, it's unforgettable. There are plenty of excursions to enjoy. You may get the opportunity to snorkel or swim with curious sea lions, sea turtles, rays and sharks – marine life here is as impressive as that on land.
Strict regulations are sacred in the Galapagos – all designed to help protect these unique ecosystems, with the animals’ welfare always at the centre of everything, as it should be. So your island landings will be carefully timed to make sure the wildlife is protected from over-exposure to too many visitors at once.
On your final morning, you’ll enjoy one last island visit before saying goodbye to your guide, your boat and your crew and heading to the airport for your flight back to mainland Ecuador. Here you’ll connect with your overnight flight home, full of memories and a new appreciation for this truly unique corner of the world and its wild residents.
