[title] => Caprivi Strip
[oldid] => 8030
[alias] => caprivi-strip
[id] => 289
[state] => 1
[content] => Previously much neglected and overlooked, the Caprivi Strip is gaining increasing prominence on the Namibian safari scene. A thin ribbon of land in the north-east, at different points this area borders Angola, Botswana and Zambia, meaning it often combines well with trips to Victoria Falls and the Okavango Delta. Experiences in the Caprivi often resemble those of the Delta but at less stomach churning prices, with beautiful wetland scenery and permanent rivers providing a base for scenic boat cruises, fishing and sometimes game drives. Wildlife numbers are not at the same level as Botswana’s Delta and Linyanti areas, but there are good volumes of lion, buffalo, zebra and antelope, with large gatherings of hippos and elephant throughout. With so much water around, this is also an outstanding birding area, on a par with virtually anywhere on the continent.
There are various national parks and reserves within the Strip, including Mudumu, Mamili and Bwabwata, all with slightly different attractions and animals. An itinerary combining multiple destinations within the Caprivi therefore provides excellent variety. All budgets are catered for, with some opulent lodges but the focus generally more on affordability and a warm welcome. This is also the most heavily populated area of Namibia, so you’ll pass through numerous small villages as you traverse the Strip. Perfect for a second time visitor to Namibia, or for those focusing more on animals, birds and boats than desert and mountains, the Caprivi should not be ignored.

[title] => Namibia Central Highlands
[oldid] => 8031
[alias] => namibia-central-highlands
[id] => 290
[state] => 1
[content] => Something of a catch-all term for a large swathe of territory with various local quirks and nuances, the Central Highlands for our purposes stretches all the way from the Erongo Mountains north-west of Windhoek to the Waterberg Plateau, in the north east of the country approaching Caprivi. Often overlooked, a number of destinations within this range should be seriously considered for detailed exploration, particularly for those whose itinerary concentrates mainly on the north. There are numerous examples of Namibia’s famed expansive landscapes, a variety of wildlife boosted by world renowned conservation projects and some top class walking trails in differing highland ranges.
For us, there are four major highlights within this area where stays of at least two nights will be rewarding. The Erongo Mountains are a rugged, accessible taster of definitive Damaraland scenery, with strewn kopjes, green valleys and rolling mountains. This is an outstanding walking destination, with breathtaking landscapes, ancient rock art and one outstanding lodge. Almost directly north of Windhoek is the private Okonjima Reserve, home to the world famous Africat Foundation. Within an expanding fenced territory there is plentiful wildlife, excellent accommodation and exciting ways to get close to leopard and brown hyena as well as other endangered species. Further east is the beautiful Waterberg Plateau, within a protected reserve that boasts stunning walking trails and a healthy range of wildlife. Finally there is Spitzkoppe a stunning area of granite peaks with interesting geology and rock art. Many itineraries include one night stays in these destinations to break up long drives between more renowned highlights, but we think that each is definitely worth a closer look.

[title] => Damaraland
[oldid] => 8032
[alias] => damaraland
[id] => 291
[state] => 1
[content] => One of the key attractions of central and northern Namibia, Damaraland covers vast swathes of largely uninhabited, spectacular landscapes with utterly unique wildlife phenomena. Nature documentary lovers will be familiar with the rugged mountains, cascading kopjes and dry river beds, home to desert adapted elephant and rhino, still hardily living out their lifelong struggle against scarce water and limited food sources. Self-driving this area is remarkable, with mile upon mile of empty roads framed by incredible scenery that can quickly change from lunar to desert to mountainous. There are healthy populations of giraffe, zebra, kudu, leopard and even a small number of lions, particularly as you get closer to Etosha. And there is also human interest, from the ancient rock art in Southern Damaraland to the beginning of the indigenous Himba communities as you head further north.
With such variety of scenery, wildlife and experiences, it is often advisable to spend time in two different areas of Damaraland. The south promises rugged, kopje strewn landscapes, game drives to search for desert elephant and the ancient rock art site at Twyfelfontein. Further north, you can track black rhino in the Palmwag Concession or hike in the Etendeka Mountains, a remote haven for nature lovers and scenery chewers. There are some outstanding accommodation options at each end of the price spectrum, and first class guides to shed further light on this incomparable area. Nowhere is more instantly recognisable as Namibia, and we would recommend that no visitor should miss Damaraland.

[title] => Luderitz & The South
[oldid] => 8034
[alias] => luderitz-the-south
[id] => 292
[state] => 1
[content] => A relatively unexplored region, the south-west contains some of Namibia’s most unforgiving environs. This is a truly remote place of often untouched desert, with a new national park in the diamond mining Sperrgebiet area and an astonishing wildlife phenomenon in the wild horses of the Namib. Situated roughly equidistant between Fish River Canyon and Sossusvlei, many itineraries seek to rush through this area, stopping for a night at Aus and perhaps making it over to Luderitz for a day before moving onto the more conventional highlights. But this does a great disservice to an area with such varied attractions.
Luderitz itself is the biggest town in the south west, its attractive pastel coloured buildings hemmed in by the desert on one side and the Atlantic on the other, making it arguably the most picturesque town in Namibia. Just south of here is Kolmanskop, an eerie former German diamond mining town. Abandoned in the 1950s, the grand colonial buildings are now swamped in desert sand, the Namib slowly and perhaps symbolically taking over a symbol of human avarice while providing sensational photo opportunities. Close to Aus, there are incongruous wild horses, somehow thriving amidst the arid conditions, and a selection of Commonwealth War Graves and POW camps that speak of the unlikely history of this isolated region. The attractions are undoubtedly very different from the guaranteed wildlife of Etosha and Damaraland, but there is much in this vast, mostly unspoiled wilderness to keep you occupied for at least three days.

[title] => Fish River Canyon
[oldid] => 8035
[alias] => fish-river-canyon
[id] => 293
[state] => 1
[content] => Situated remotely in the deep-south, close to the border with South Africa and adrift of the classic Namibian self-drive route, Fish River Canyon is well worth the considerable effort it takes to get there. Although far from the only claimant to the ambiguous title of the world’s second largest canyon (behind Arizona’s Grand version), Fish River is a stunning, unspoiled natural wonder. The somewhat disputed dimensions are unarguably impressive: depths of over 500 metres, 100km long and nearly 30km wide, the canyon is an absolute monster! The colourful rocks, shapely formations and sparse flora and fauna, clinging on to a tough life in conditions unchanged for thousands of years, are all fairly reminiscent of the Naukluft Mountains further north. But the Fish River Canyon is genuinely isolated, a frontier land that few have visited but an increasing number are attempting to open up.
Most visitors arrive via an arduous but rewarding three day drive, with long distances and intriguing outposts to spend the night en route from Windhoek or Sossusvlei. For those with a little extra money and less time, it is also possible to fly in by light aircraft, or even enjoy a scenic day trip, landing at the airstrip, visiting the canyon and then moving on to your next destination. For those keen to make the effort to come here though, we would recommend at least a one night stay, preferably a little longer. Hikes within the canyon are superb, including overnight expeditions with mules, and there are isolated pools in the valleys where you can stop for a unique swim. There are now varied accommodation options, with superb locations overlooking the rim of the canyon or on private reserves. Sitting with a drink in hand and your legs dangling into one of the planet’s largest chasms, with none of the Arizona hordes, makes the drudgery to get here all seem worthwhile.

[title] => Etosha National Park
[oldid] => 8036
[alias] => etosha-national-park
[id] => 294
[state] => 1
[content] => With by far Namibia’s most impressive volume and diversity of animals, Etosha National Park is also one of Southern Africa’s premier safari destinations. It rivals some of the best South African reserves for self-drive safaris, with a raft of welcoming camps, good roads, numerous waterholes and well habituated wildlife. The ethereal, shimmering Etosha Pan is a further attraction, an incredibly photogenic backdrop to the serious business of game viewing. Etosha boasts excellent numbers of elephant, giraffe, zebra and antelope, while the black rhino is more elusive but still regularly seen. All of the major cats are present, with cheetah usually spied during the day and lion and leopard more active after dark. Etosha is exceptional in the dry season, when animals gather around the numerous (often artificial) waterholes, many of them within camp grounds, so you can grab a drink and seat to enjoy game viewing long into the night without having to move!
The south and east of the park have traditionally been the most accessible areas, but the western gate has recently been opened to service a brand new lodge, meaning it’s now possible to navigate across the park right from east to west (or vice versa). The west, south and east are all very different, so many visitors choose to spend at least a couple of nights each in two different areas. There are various camps to suit all budgets and tastes, many outside the park boundaries but only a very short drive from the gates. Additionally, there are private reserves outside the park, such as the luxurious, game rich Ongava Reserve, which have all the same species, offer similar activities and are every bit as worthy of a visit.

[title] => Namibrand Nature Reserve
[oldid] => 8037
[alias] => namibrand-nature-reserve
[id] => 295
[state] => 1
[content] => South of Sossusvlei but still very much part of the Namib Desert, the Namibrand Nature Reserve is a huge protected area covering over 2,000 sq km of varied landscapes. The massive sand seas prominent further north are still in evidence here, interspersed with rugged mountains, wide open plains and tumbling kopjes (piles of granite boulders). This is a breathtaking, remote land which remains almost completely unspoiled due to its historic inaccessibility, together with more recent efforts by committed conservationists. Every bit as beautiful in the wet season as during the dry, dusty winter, the rains bring sweeping carpets of verdant greenery and vibrant desert rainbows to contrast with the usual oranges, golds and browns of the Namib-Naukluft. The wildlife here is thriving and you can expect to see the usual cast of desert classics, headed by oryx, springbok and ostrich.
With these rich, diverse landscapes, the Namibrand is ripe for exploration on foot or by vehicle. The renowned Wolwedans organisation pioneered the establishment of this erstwhile farming area as a protected reserve, and it now boasts a number of camps in differing locations. Full day expeditions, shorter nature drives and guided walks are on the activities menu, and it is usually possible to walk and drive on the same excursion. There are also rustic, mobile camping adventures deep into the reserve, where you can sleep under the stars and marvel at the noiseless beauty of the area. The Namibrand is less well-known than its northern neighbour, with many visitors heading straight to Sossusvlei and neglecting to go further south, but we heartily recommend you include this pristine reserve in your itinerary.

[title] => Sossusvlei
[oldid] => 8038
[alias] => sossusvlei
[id] => 296
[state] => 1
[content] => Unquestionably one of the major highlights of Namibian travel, the towering, majestic sand seas of the Namib Desert around Sossusvlei and Sesriem are truly spectacular. The graceful curves, honeyed colours and high peaks of what some claim to be the world’s largest dunes contrast beautifully with the stark, other-worldly “vleis” that lie under their shadow. These dry valleys are striking white pans, where cracked dry mud and dead trees form an alien landscape that feels utterly unique and ethereal. Dead Vlei, Hidden Vlei and Sossusvlei itself are the most renowned, where it is possible to walk on the pans or climb the surrounding dunes to view them panoramically from above, with wonderful photo opportunities from either vantage point.
There is a surprising variety of resilient wildlife clinging onto life in the punishing environs of the Namib. During your time in Sossusvlei you will see plenty of springbok, ostrich, jackals and the beautiful oryx, photogenically dotting the timeless landscapes with their distinctive straight horns and black and white colouring. There are tok tokkie beetles, sidewinder snakes and quicksilver geckos, each uniquely adapted to live with scarce water sources and cope with the oven heat of the desert floor. Less common sightings include bat eared foxes, brown hyena and African wild cats, but the sheer diversity of life that can thrive in this harsh, vast desert is truly remarkable. Having noted the sensational landscapes and intriguing flora and fauna, there is also lots to do in the area, from climbing massive dunes to hot air ballooning, quad biking and visits to Sesriem Canyon, making Sossusvlei an essential element of any Southern Namibia itinerary.

[title] => Naukluft Mountains
[oldid] => 8039
[alias] => naukluft-mountains
[id] => 297
[state] => 1
[content] => Combining with the Namib Desert to form the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the vivid scenery of the Naukluft Mountains is undoubtedly deserving of a visit in its own right. The spectacular cliffs, plateaus and ravines are a geologist’s dream, with varying rock types dominated by dolomite and limestone, manifesting in multi-coloured, implausibly shaped formations that decorate the landscape. Among the valleys and peaks there are freshwater springs that form crystal clear pools, perfect for a refreshing swim. There is a surprising array of wildlife here, including zebra, oryx, springbok and kudu, while elusive leopard prowl but are rarely seen. This is also a fantastic area for plant lovers, with euphorbia and distinctive quiver trees lining the walking trails to provide excellent photo opportunities against the expansive mountainous backdrops.
Unsurprisingly this is ideal walking territory, with unguided hikes to enjoy from your lodge and longer, guided expeditions that will test the leg muscles. Bumpy, scenic drives in 4x4s are also enjoyable, with precipitous routes rewarding visitors with beautiful, panoramic vistas that can be appreciated over a picturesque sundowner. An easy drive north of Sossusvlei and south from Windhoek, the Naukluft Mountains perfectly break up journeys between the two, and are equally enticing for a couple of days of active exploration or horizontal relaxation.

[title] => Skeleton Coast
[oldid] => 8040
[alias] => skeleton-coast
[id] => 298
[state] => 1
[content] => A genuine frontier destination, the Skeleton Coast separating mainland Namibia from the Atlantic offers one of Africa’s most remote, unspoiled areas. The Skeleton Coast National Park stretches north along the coast from Swakopmund up to the border with Angola, and it is in this region that the most intrepid itineraries focus their activities. In truth though, the whole coastline from top to bottom boasts pockets of stark, awe inspiring scenery where the desert meets the ocean. The coast was so named due to the high number of shipwrecks over the years on this wild stretch of the Atlantic, and it‘s still possible to visit some of the wrecks.
Itineraries to this isolated, utterly unique geographical wonderland should last for at least three nights, and other experiences on offer include dune driving, guided walks, searches for desert adapted wildlife and encounters with the nomadic Himba people. The Skeleton Coast National Park itself is remote and difficult to navigate. The main coast road passes through a couple of uninviting settlements primarily used by Namibians as fishing retreats and the scenery here can feel bleak. However, just slightly off the main routes and a few kilometres inland, the scenery is as dramatic as it is varied and having the opportunity to explore this region is a once in a lifetime experience. It is not possible to self-drive the majority of the area so we would recommend a few other ways explore the area. The most unique is an exclusive fly-in safari, where you travel in small groups of no more than four guests and a pilot / guide per light aircraft, hopping between camps in different areas along the coast. For this itinerary, the aircraft is generally your game drive and transfer vehicle combined. Another option is to fly into a remote, permanent lodge in the far northern Kunene region, where the Himba experiences are authentic and the landscapes incredible. Alternatively there are a couple of camps, one right on the coast and one inland near the far eastern side of the Park which can be accessed relatively easily on a self-drive trip. Staying in these areas is not cheap but the experiences are a captivating and unforgettable mixture of the elements that make Namibia special.

[title] => Southern Kalahari
[oldid] => 8041
[alias] => southern-kalahari
[id] => 299
[state] => 1
[content] => The vast Kalahari Desert extends for nearly a million sq km, covering parts of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. In Namibia it is mainly comprised of savannah, with shrubby grassland interrupted by the odd apricot dune but nothing to resemble the towering soft sands of the Namib further west. Mariental, is the major town in an area usually included as a one night stop-off in itineraries travelling between Windhoek and the Fish River Canyon. This doesn’t really do justice to the increasing accommodation options, stunning landscapes, superb walking programmes and fascinating desert adapted flora and fauna. For this reason we would recommend you consider spending two nights in the region, particularly if your itinerary is confined to southern Namibia.
Highlights include serene nature drives searching out oryx, springbok and ostrich, along with some impressively stark scenery, before enjoying a peaceful sundowner on a dune. There are some outstanding, well-marked walking trails on the private ranches and reserves, perfect for safe desert exploration under your own steam. To get further under the skin of the Kalahari, guided excursions reveal more about the elusive smaller details of this fragile eco-system. And there are now overnight hikes into the heart of the Kalahari and the adjacent Nama Karoo, sleeping in comfortable tented accommodation to truly appreciate the peace of the desert night and the panoramic blanket of stars. The Southern Kalahari perhaps doesn’t have the jaw dropping, headline grabbing landscapes of Sossusvlei and the Namibrand further west, but it is well worthy of exploration, especially for repeat visitors to Namibia.

[title] => Swakopmund
[oldid] => 8042
[alias] => swakopmund
[id] => 300
[state] => 1
[content] => Arguably Namibia’s most interesting town and certainly offering the widest range of entertainments and activities, Swakopmund is an essential stop on most itineraries. The central coastal location, at the mouth of the Swakop River and the edge of the Namib Desert, makes Swakopmund perfectly situated for self-drive itineraries including Sossusvlei to the south or Damaraland to the north. The wide streets, colonial architecture, well-kept gardens and raft of European-style guesthouses are recognisably Germanic, lending the town a unique feel amidst the remote African desert and wild Atlantic coast. It is certainly an outpost of civilisation and relative urban development compared with the rest of the country, which explains why it works so well in the middle of a wider itinerary taking in other hot-spots where abundant wildlife and stark, majestic scenery are the focus.
Within the town there are a couple of small beaches (swimming not recommended) and a lighthouse, with decent bars and restaurants overlooking the ocean for a relaxing afternoon drink or tasty seafood dinner. The centre makes for a fascinating stroll, with immaculate, colourful German architecture and a decent range of galleries, shops, spas and activity centres. Just outside of town there are some major attractions, including the beautiful Skeleton Coast scenery at Sandwich Harbour, the flamingos and seals of Pelican Point and whale and dolphin watching opportunities out on the high seas. With a selection of attractive, excellent value boutique guesthouses on offer, we would highly recommend a couple of nights in Swakopmund.

[alias] => windhoek
[id] => 301

[content] => Quaint and laid-back, with a relatively pretty setting surrounded by rolling hills, Windhoek is not the world’s most thrilling city but it is one of Southern Africa’s more pleasant capitals. There are pockets of cultural interest, with German colonial influence leaving behind some interesting architecture, churches and an increasingly thriving café culture. There are a growing number of good restaurants, bars and boutique guesthouses that make Windhoek a very agreeable place to spend a night after a long-haul overnight flight or a tiring self-drive safari, especially as it is only a half hour transfer to the airport on scenic, uncluttered roads. With a central location, and the real Namibian highlights spreading out evenly in all directions, Windhoek is also very convenient as a beginning and end point of self-drive loops around the country.
In terms of attractions and activities, Windhoek’s cup isn’t overflowing but there is certainly enough to fill a day’s exploration. It is a relatively green and attractive city, with parks, gardens and wide, European-style boulevards making it ideally suited to a walking tour at your own leisure. There are a smattering of museums, the best of which is the Alte Feste, housed in an old fort and delving into Namibia’s history with a look at both the colonial period and indigenous cultures. There is good shopping to be done on Independence Avenue and in the increasing number of modern shopping malls, with local art, crafts, diamonds and fabrics among the best buys. Windhoek’s most striking colonial building is the Lutheran Christ Church, just off Fidel Castro Street, which is not usually accessible but certainly worth stopping at to take some pictures of the attractive façade.

Of all Africa’s renowned safari destinations, Namibia unquestionably offers the most diverse range of landscapes, experiences and activities. A vast country with very few inhabitants, the awe-inspiring scenery quickly moves from rippling sand dunes and rugged mountains to windswept coast and shimmering salt pans. There are great volumes of classic Big 5 wildlife and some truly unique, desert adapted rarities. An assortment of indigenous communities provides fascinating cultural interest, while modern conservation operations are among the most successful on the continent. All this goes without mentioning an intriguing colonial history, eerie deserted ghost towns, the world’s second largest canyon and a mini version of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. And to cap it all off, Namibia is safe, clean, welcoming, relatively good value and perfectly suited to self-drive adventures.
The holidays we design to Namibia are all so different. The variation of experiences offered throughout the country caters to many specific tastes and interests, but the country can also be looked at usefully through a simple geographical split. The south is mainly about the scenery and landscapes, including the vast, remote Fish River Canyon and some of the world’s tallest dunes at Sossusvlei overlooking the ethereal white dead lakes known as “vleis.” There's a short, populous respite in the centre, with the capital Windhoek and the exciting coastal activities at Swakopmund. Then, further north, a wildlife focus becomes prominent, from the teeming waterholes at Swakopmund to the watery pleasures of the Caprivi Strip and the unique desert-adapted rhino and elephant in Damaraland. There is also arguably more cultural interest in the north, with the nomadic Himba people, the ancient San Bushman survival techniques and the unchanged traditions of the Herero. Saying that, though, Namibia's north boasts its own exceptional, otherworldly landscape, the legendary Skeleton Coast.
One of the things we love most about Namibia, is that all of this diversity can be easily incorporated into one long itinerary, or into two more detailed trips focusing on the south and the north separately. Although driving distances can be long, the roads, scenery and sheer enjoyment of driving in Namibia are all perfect. And if you're not keen on the thought of self-driving, and fancy getting around as quickly as possible, there are scenic light aircraft flights connecting all the hotspots. With a wide range of accommodation styles and prices to suit all budgets, good restaurants and extremely welcoming people, Namibia genuinely does have something for everyone.
Namibia’s extreme and varied climate conditions make it a genuine year-round destination. The best time to go on safari is during the dry season from May to October, particularly later in the year when the arid conditions cause huge volumes of wildlife to congregate at Etosha’s water holes. This is particularly true of the late dry season, when the wildlife can really suffer in desert areas such as Sossusvlei and Damaraland. There’s a chance you might struggle a little too, as the barometer rises inexorably. For keen hikers and active visitors, the cooler dry months of May and June may be ideal. As the dry season progresses, the dusty, arid landscapes for which Namibia is perhaps best known become ever more prominent across the country.
Contrastingly, the rainy season brings different scenery and far more challenging travelling conditions but a wealth of other attractions. The formerly dry river beds can flood, meaning drivers may have to turn back and travel for an extra few hours to reach their destination. You’lll also not see the same numbers of wildlife during the rains, as animals are more widely dispersed due to abundant water sources. Having said all this, it is perhaps our favourite time to visit Namibia. The scenery can be truly inspirational, with sweeping carpets of green grasses and vibrantly coloured flowers emerging to cover the mountains and desert. Animals are content, young are born and prices are cheaper, while there are even fewer cars on the roads and less people at the tourist sites. In short, both broad periods offer a multitude of attractions, which is yet another reason to visit Namibia twice!
Food and non-premium drinks are often included at safari lodges.The safari exception is at the government restcamps, where the board basis is likely to be bed and breakfast. At guesthouses and hotels in areas such as Windhoek and Swakopmund, you are likely to stay on a B&B basis, so it is always useful to check on the best restaurants in town and the most convenient places to pick up lunch and snacks on self-drive itineraries. The NWR restcamps in Etosha and elsewhere will also have restaurant facilities, often in the form of buffets.
At safari lodges, the food tends to be delicious, international fare with large portions, numerous courses at dinner and a surprisingly wide range of options given that you are often dining at a remote camp with no easy access to fresh supplies or modern technology. Snacks and drinks are regularly provided between meals, meaning that most visitors to Namibia tend to return feeling extremely well fed! In Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Luderitz there are some very good seafood restaurants, and Windhoek boasts a growing range of gourmet restaurants and modern cafes. For further advice or help with booking a table, just ask us, we’d love to help.
There are currently no direct flights into Namibia from the UK, but there are a number of convenient indirect options. There are daily, direct, overnight flights into Johannesburg or Cape Town, with connecting flights to Windhoek (or Walvis Bay) available with Airlink. Alternatively, Ethiopian Airlines has flights via Addis Ababa five times a week and Qatar Airways (via Doha) four times a week. Another indirect option is with Eurowings (Lufthansa’s low cost airline) who fly daily from Frankfurt to Windhoek.
To visit Namibia, your passport needs to be valid for at least six months after the date you arrive, and you’ll need at least three blank pages. If you’re travelling via South Africa, it’s important to check the latest travel advice for there too – they have their own entry rules.
If your passport is due to expire soon or doesn’t meet the requirements, make sure to renew it in good time, you won’t be allowed in if your passport isn’t valid or has been reported lost or stolen. It’s also worth ensuring you have evidence of a return ticket and travel insurance before you travel.
From 1 April 2025, UK travellers will need a visa to enter Namibia. Luckily, it’s a straightforward process. You can either get a visa on arrival at your point of entry or apply for an e-visa online before you travel.
The cost at time of writing is 1,600 Namibian dollars for travellers aged 12 and over. Visas for children aged 6 to 11 cost 800 Namibian dollars, and for kids under 6, you don’t need to pay a fee at all.
When granted, you’ll receive a multiple-entry visa valid for the length of time you’ve requested.
If you’re planning to work, volunteer or stay longer, you’ll need to arrange a different type of visa before you travel, the visa on arrival won’t cover you for these.
As we’re not medical experts, it's essential you contact your GP regarding vaccinations and the like for travel to Namibia. What follows are some suggestions, but they must be verified by a medical professional. In addition to such vaccinations as you’d routinely have for living in the UK, further boosters are recommended for Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Diptheria.
Malaria is not present in much of Namibia, particularly in the desert environs of the south. There are isolated instances reported in the north-west and around Etosha, and we would strongly recommend that you take malaria prophylaxis for itineraries travelling in the Caprivi Strip. However, if your route is confined to Windhoek, Swakopmund and destinations further south, it's unlikely that you'll need to take precautions against malaria. Please consult your GP for further, up-to-the-minute advice on what malaria precautions to take for your itinerary.
We also like these guys, but again, you must talk to your GP first: The Travel Doctor, an interactive website providing specialist health information for travellers, plus customised lists of travel medicines, vaccines and malaria tablets for holiday makers, global adventure travellers and expeditions.
Namibia has a long, dramatic Atlantic coastline, but it’s not your classic beach destination. The ocean is simply too cold and wild for swimming most of the time, and none of the beaches or accommodations are suitable for classic beach holidays. It’s not uncommon for our clients to fancy some downtime at the beach after tiring days of self-driving, hiking and game viewing. If so, we’d recommend transiting through Johannesburg before heading to the beach paradises of Mozambique, Mauritius or Madagascar. There are some coastal options available in South Africa itself, too. Flights to East Africa involve multiple connections, so we wouldn’t recommend combining your Namibia holiday with Zanzibar or the Kenyan coast.
Namibia is a very safe country, particularly in the areas most frequented by tourists. Crime rates are relatively low in the major cities too, especially when compared with other sub-Saharan African countries. There would normally be little to deter you from walking alone in Windhoek, Swakopmund or Luderitz at night, but if you do have any concerns about particular areas, we'd recommend chatting to the staff at your hotel or our local partners for real-time advice. In reality, the most pertinent safety advice for Namibia is that self-drivers exercise caution on the roads!
Self-driving is arguably the best way to experience Namibia. Driving is on the left, road signs in English and the road network is generally good, with decent gravel tracks in more remote areas and good tarmac roads used on some of the major routes. Perhaps more important, the wonderful, vast landscapes are entirely suited to appreciation from behind the wheel, allowing for numerous photography stops and an accompanying soundtrack of your choice! With so few people in such a large country, there are never many vehicles on the road, meaning you’ll often have these awe inspiring vistas entirely to yourself, and will never be stuck in traffic anywhere outside of Windhoek. If you’ve ever dreamed of the archetypal wide open highways of a road trip in the USA, our humble opinion is that Namibia will put this entirely in the shade.
Many companies will advise you that it’s fine to travel with a 2WD vehicle in Namibia, which is perhaps true for certain areas and for driving in the dry season. However, we have negotiated such competitive rates on 4WD car hire that we will always include a 4WD vehicle in a self-drive itinerary, unless there are any exceptional reasons why you would prefer a 2WD. With more space, durability and performance capabilities, we firmly believe that these are the best vehicles for exploring Namibia’s varied terrains. Furthermore, we are also confident that we provide the best, most comprehensive package of self-drive benefits available on the market. These include a fully programmed mobile phone; a complimentary briefing and ice box for all clients; full maps and detailed driving instructions; a second spare tyre; and the most comprehensive insurance package available, complete with Life Saver Medi Vac insurance and cover for undercarriage, tyre, windscreen and wheel rim damage. You’lll struggle to find this level of facilities and care elsewhere. Finally, you will be provided with a 24-hour contact name and number for both ourselves and our local partners, meaning there really is no safer way to enjoy a self-drive itinerary in Namibia.
Tipping is common, and always appreciated, in Namibia. It’s worth keeping in mind that many local communities face economic challenges, and tips can make a real difference to people’s livelihoods.
In restaurants, a tip of around 10% is standard. For porters at hotels and lodges, a small amount is expected too.
When you’re on safari, we suggest tipping your guide directly, about N$150 per person per day is a good guide. Most lodges and camps also have a communal tipping box for staff like housekeepers, chefs, and hosts. We’d recommend a similar daily amount for this shared contribution.
If you have a dedicated driver or spotter on safari, you might also choose to tip them directly, although they’re often included in the camp staff tips. For transfer drivers, around N$25 per journey is usually fine, unless it’s a particularly long drive.
At the end of the day, tipping is a personal choice. If you feel someone has gone above and beyond, feel free to give more. If not, or if you prefer not to tip at all, that’s completely up to you, these are just suggestions to help guide you.
We believe travel should be a force for good. That means exploring with open eyes, treading lightly, and respecting the people and places that make the world so special. Our code of conduct isn’t about rules, it’s simply a guide to help you travel thoughtfully, ethically, and with care. Because every small choice makes a big difference.
If you choose to trust us with your holiday, we’ll send you a “Travel Facts” document when confirming your booking. This includes useful facts and travel advice, such as restaurant recommendations, reading tips, basic language information, cultural traditions, climate information, brief historical overviews, and more. We feel that this offers a useful insight and can help you interact with local residents in a more sensitive, well-informed manner. Please do try to take the time to read this information before your visit, it’s worth the time!
A number of the countries in which we operate holidays are religious societies with a widely observed set of customs. Always respect these norms, particularly when visiting religious buildings.
To the best of our knowledge, all hotels, lodges, and camps within our portfolio operate stringent measures to minimise water usage. All of our destinations have issues with water supplies to a certain extent, so feel free to raise any possible wastage should you encounter it during your stay, either with the accommodation or with us upon your return.
Please ask permission before taking photographs of people, and respect their wishes if they are not happy to be photographed. We find that friendly requests and a smile are usually met with a ‘yes!’
Strive, where possible, to make your own contribution to environmental practices as you travel. This might include minimising your electricity usage, not smoking in protected areas, avoiding coral while snorkelling, and safely disposing of all litter (recycling where possible).
Where possible, try to purchase from local suppliers. This includes shopping for souvenirs, dining out at restaurants, and booking additional excursions during your free time. In areas where haggling is an accepted part of daily life, don’t be offended if you’re unable to obtain what you perceive as a fair price for an item.
We emphasise to local suppliers that our clients should never be taken on unsolicited shopping trips, but if this does happen, try to retain your sense of humour, provide a firm refusal to participate and do let us know about it on your return. We pass on all feedback from every trip undertaken with us to our relevant local suppliers, who all share our commitment to travelling with sensitivity.
Please don’t remove any indigenous items from their natural habitat and attempt to bring them home as a souvenir. This particularly applies to everything from coral, shells, plants and food in the natural world, to cultural artefacts and antiques.
If you’re unsure about anything relating to the above, please feel free to chat to us. We’ve travelled extensively in the country and will be more than happy to offer our considered advice.
