Your tailor-made holiday will be as unique as you are. These itineraries are just a starting point, a bit of inspiration to show what’s possible. Your own trip all starts with a conversation with one of our Namibia experts, who’ll take the time to understand what matters most to you and design the perfect holiday to match.
If you love nothing more than lacing up your walking boots and heading into the wild, we've designed this Namibia holiday is for you. Namibia’s wide-open landscapes are some of the most scenic on the continent, and some of the quietest too. This two-week offbeat self-drive itinerary links together the country’s best walking spots, from the desert dunes of the Namib to the rocky trails of the Naukluft Mountains, with a little wildlife and stargazing thrown in along the way. You’ll hike across red sands, sleep under the stars in the Namibrand Nature Reserve, and explore granite peaks and valleys where you might not see another soul all day. You’ll also have the chance to track wildlife on foot in remote reserves, learn about ancient rock art, and take in Namibia’s big, bold landscapes at walking pace. No rushing about, no crowds, just wide open horizons and plenty of unforgettable moments along the way.
Here's a summary of what you might get up to day-to-day on this Namibia holiday. As always, this is just an idea. Every single day of your trip will be tailored to suit you.
Your walking adventure starts with an overnight flight from the UK to Johannesburg, ready to connect to Namibia the following day.
You’ll arrive in Windhoek today and be whisked off to your hotel in the suburbs. Later on, your 4WD hire car will be delivered and you’ll be briefed on the car, your route and given plenty of top tips for driving in Namibia. If you fancy heading out, Joe’s Beerhouse is a lively local favourite, or The Olive offers something a little fancier.
An early start awaits this morning as you’ll begin your journey into Namibia’s wilderness. Heading towards the Southern Kalahari, a region of soft dunes, scrubland and desert-adapted wildlife. This is your first real glimpse of the vast landscapes Namibia is so known and loved for. Tonight, you’ll stay at a comfortable permanent lodge, surrounded by silence and starry skies.
This morning, lace up your boots and set out on foot across the Kalahari. You’ll hike over endless rolling dunes and quiet valleys where giraffe and oryx graze. Tonight, you’ll stay in a tented camp out in the wilderness, with dinner cooked over the fire and some seriously impressive stargazing to enjoy before bed.
You’ll continue your hike today through the Great Karoo, a semi-arid savannah region rich in desert flora and sweeping views. When you make it back to your lodge this afternoon, pop your feet up for a well-earned rest and a cool drink (or three).
Today’s drive takes you west into the heart of the Namib Desert, where you’ll stop off near Sesriem for a one-night stay. There’s plenty to explore on foot here, you can climb the huge Dune 45, visit the dramatic Sesriem Canyon, or head out to Dead Vlei, one of the most photogenic and iconic places in the country.
Drive south into the remote Namibrand Nature Reserve this morning, where you’ll join the Tok Tokkie Trails for a two-day walking adventure through soft dunes, rocky outcrops and wide desert valleys. For any keen hiker, this is a serious adventure! Your day ends with a peaceful night under the stars in an open-air bedroll, no tent needed here!
Another full day on the trails is waiting for you today, hiking through this pristine, protected wilderness. You’ll pass mountain ridges, open plains and dry riverbeds as you go, stopping for rest and lunch along the way. Back at camp, dinner is shared around the fire before another night of desert stargazing.
After your final desert breakfast, you'll hit the road and drive north to the Naukluft Mountains. You’ll stay for one night in a lovely lodge, with the option to walk one of the unguided trails if your hiking boots are still calling, or simply relax and soak up the scenery.
Today’s journey takes you northeast to the rugged Erongo Mountains, where giant granite boulders and surprising greenery make for a refreshing change of pace. You’ll stay for two nights in a beautiful lodge with panoramic views over the mountain landscapes.
Guided walks are included in your stay at the lodge, so there’s plenty to keep you busy if you’re after a little more structured adventure. We’d recommend heading out to explore the ancient rock art sites nearby, take nature drives, or strike out on one of the many unguided walking trails that weave through the hills and valleys.
You’ll head north today to your final stop, the Waterberg Plateau, a forested ridge with spectacular walking opportunities and great wildlife. You’ll spend your final two nights here, with time to relax, walk, and soak up the views.
What better way to spend your last day of your Namibia walking holiday than giving your boots one last hurrah with a final day on foot. With plenty of routes to choose from – from short strolls to longer hikes, your adventures won’t be over yet. There’s a good chance of spotting wildlife too, including klipspringer, baboons, and even the occasional rhino. So keep your eyes peeled!
After breakfast, it’s time to make your way back to Windhoek, a drive of around three and a half hours. Drop off your hire car at the airport and check in for your overnight flight home via Johannesburg.
