[content] => Peru’s sprawling capital city is a far more appealing place to visit than it used to be. Lima has always had its share of historic attractions, ranging from the pre-Inca ruins of Huaca Pucllana sitting incongruously in the central Miraflores district of the city, to a well-preserved ‘Plaza de Armas’ dating from the colonial era, complete with its imposing Basilica Cathedral, as well as the Monastery of San Francisco perching above a subterranean world of expansive catacombs. Culture vultures have also always been drawn to Lima’s excellent museums, the Gold Museum and the fascinating archaeology and art collection on display at Larco Herrera being particularly noteworthy.
What sets Lima apart nowadays, however, is a much cleaner and safer feel, a cosmopolitan buzz thanks to its flourishing economy, and a thriving foodie scene. Some of South America’s best restaurants can now be found here, and with Peruvian cuisine enjoying ever-increasing renown on the world stage, gourmet tours and cookery classes in the city are a great way to get under the skin of modern Lima. And whilst the city's official ‘centre’ is still not the most attractive place to visit, the coastal districts of Miraflores and Barranco, as well as neighbouring San Isidro, are where the majority of quality hotels are to be found along with plenty of bars, restaurants, leafy parks and squares. Lima experiences hazy skies throughout much of the year due to its unique geographical position, so you are unlikely to spend time on the beach, but the sea-facing restaurants around Miraflores are a wonderful place to enjoy fresh ceviche and the sweeping views of the Pacific coastline.

[alias] => cusco
[id] => 303

[content] => One of South America’s most atmospheric cities, Cusco is an intoxicating place that exudes rich history and vibrant culture at every turn. Framed by the imposing peaks of the Andes, Cusco was one-time capital of the Inca empire and of key strategic importance. When the Spanish invaders arrived in the early 1500s, they were so impressed by the city that they chose not to destroy it entirely, and instead to build on top of and around its mighty Inca foundations. What was left behind is a unique architectural mix which still captivates visitors to this day. Korikancha is one of the best-preserved examples of this architectural fusion, with the colonial church and convent of Santo Domingo perched on top of the foundations of the Inca Temple of the Sun, though you will encounter countless other examples throughout Cusco. Imposing Inca walls can be found by wandering the city’s labyrinthine network of side streets and alley ways, and a wealth of impressive Inca sites in the hills and valleys that surround the city are not to be missed.
It is not just history lovers who will enjoy Cusco however. Its buzzing centre is home to colourful local markets and elegant squares lined with cafes and bars, ideal for watching the world go by. You will also find excellent restaurants, cookery classes and some intriguing museums (the Machu Picchu museum and the chocolate museum both come particularly recommended.) Cusco is also the regional gateway for onward visits on to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Machu Picchu and Andean treks such as the Inca Trail.

[title] => Lake Titicaca
[oldid] => 6326
[alias] => lake-titicaca
[id] => 304
[state] => 1
[content] => With its inky blue depths set against a dramatic backdrop of snow-capped mountains, Lake Titicaca is not only visually striking; it is also a place of legends. The world’s highest navigable lake, this vast expanse of over 8000 square kilometres of water straddling Bolivia and Peru is often referred to as the birthplace of the Inca. Manco Capac, the first Inca King was born here, and remnants of Inca sites can be found on many of the lake’s 41 islands. Countless other ancient civilisations also made this area their home long before the arrival of the Incas however, and the descendants of some of these peoples still inhabit the islands today. A typical tour on the lake will usually take in a visit to one or more of these islands, where you can enjoy superb views and the chance to see some of these island communities with their colourful traditional dress and customs which have remained unchanged for hundreds of years.
The mystique of Lake Titicaca is certainly not always apparent when you first reach Puno, the main access town to the lake in Peru. A ramshackle and at times chaotic city, it will never be a highlight of anyone’s holiday, but it is a convenient base for day trips out on to the lake, served by a regional airport in nearby Juliaca, good road connections and also a train station. Puno also has the best choice of hotels in the region, ranging from simple but affordable options in the city centre to more luxurious properties on the shores of the lake.

[content] => Arequipeños are understandably proud of their heritage and the city in which they live; their celebrated colonial home is generously dotted with fine architecture, attractive white sillar stonework, and Arequipa is often cited as the most attractive destination within Peru. The compact historic centre can easily be explored on foot and is bursting with characterful cobbled streets, impressive colonial churches and leafy plazas. The central Plaza de Armas is one of South America’s grandest squares, with a central bronze fountain, an impressive neo-classical Cathedral and arcaded buildings packed with lively restaurants and cafes. Culturally diverse, Arequipa is a fascinating town with a well-educated population and a remarkable ability to prepare mouth-watering local delicacies and specialities! To add to the city’s abundance of charm, the town is surrounded by towering snow-capped volcanoes and a patchwork of undulating countryside.

[title] => Colca Canyon
[oldid] => 6382
[alias] => colca-canyon
[id] => 306
[state] => 1
[content] => Few sights in the world have views as magnificent as those found at the vast Colca Canyon. Formed by a fault line between two prominent volcanoes, the Canyon has a depth of more than a kilometre from the cliff’s edge to the meandering River Colca below, making it one of the deepest in the world. The more remote Cotahuasi Canyon, which is also in Peru, claims the world title for depth; Colca is just 170 metres shy of Cotahuasi, meaning both canyons are over twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the US.
Condor’s Cross is an especially dramatic look out point over the canyon, roughly one and a half hours’ drive from most of the hotels in the area. It is a popular spot to visit during the mornings for a chance to see magnificent circling condors. With wing spans of up to three metres, these impressive birds glide along on the thermals and can swoop surprisingly close to spectators. Whilst temperatures can be very cool in the evenings, cacti dots the slopes and the area can almost be described as tropical, with palm trees and even orchids as the slopes descend.
The lush surrounding Colca Valley is a particularly scenic spot, home to some of the finest examples of Inca terracing in South America. The indigenous communities of the Callaguas and Cabanas still farm the hillsides to this day, so you can spot traditionally dressed locals as well as llamas as you pass by. The market town of Chivay is likely to feature at some point during exploration of this area. The most notable attraction here is at La Calera, roughly five kilometres from the town, where there are a series natural hot spring pools, heated by bubbling brooks in the mountainside.

[title] => Sacred Valley of the Incas
[oldid] => 6431
[alias] => sacred-valley
[id] => 307
[state] => 1
[content] => Astonishingly beautiful and lined with multiple hues of green and brown, the fertile Sacred Valley is an area of Peru that often gets overlooked by visitors. People tend to rush through the Valley when travelling from Cusco to Machu Picchu without taking time to stop; with its abundance of historical ruins, cultural market towns as well as the impressive nature on offer, the Sacred Valley unquestionably deserves to become a standalone destination.
The picturesque Urubamba River meanders through the Valley, making its way towards the jungle before it merges with other Amazon tributaries. Notable highlights along its course are the bustling market towns of Pisac and Chinchero, the salt pans at Maras and the phenomenal agricultural terraces of Moray. These areas are so dramatic and colourful that they are a photographer’s dream, and should not be missed. Adrenaline junkies will be suitably entertained, there are extensive opportunities to explore areas on horseback, mountain bike or by raft.
Urubamba and Ollantaytambo are two prominent towns in the region. The former is larger and home to several of the area’s lodgings, an attractive Plaza de Armas and a church at San Pedro. Ollantayambo was once an important Incan administrative centre with towering ruins. Here you will find the tiny train station and the starting point for the Inca Trail, both will lead you to the most dramatic and enchanting of the Incan citadels, Machu Picchu.

[content] => The staggering biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest is not often the first thing associated with a trip to Peru. In fact, well over half of the country is covered by dense tropical jungle, which represents 15% of the total land area of the Amazon. Those who do venture within this seemingly endless maze of swamps, rivers and tributaries are rewarded with startling opportunities to encounter pristine forests and the exotic species of wildlife that reside here. Whether it’s a darting tree frog, a howler monkey swinging through the canopy or a playful giant otter, your eagle-eyed naturalist guide will be on hand to help you uncover the treasures of the forest.
The Tambopata Reserve is one of the most rewarding destinations in the southern Amazon - it is one of the most diverse in terms of both flora and fauna. Fortunately, the area is sporadically dotted with a handful of rustic, yet sometimes luxurious, wooden eco-lodges where you can base yourselves. Stays generally last from two to four nights, which will give plenty of time to experience the wonders of the Amazon jungle that surrounds you. The gateway town of Puerto Maldonado is just an hour by air from Cusco, which makes the reserve of the most easily accessible areas to visit. It is worth noting that high temperatures, rainfall and humidity levels can be significant under the forest canopy, offering a dramatic contrast to the cool altitudes of nearby Cusc

[content] => Jewel in the crown of the Inca empire, breath-taking from afar and up close, South America’s most iconic visitor attraction rarely disappoints. To even reach Machu Picchu in the first place is an experience in itself as - whether you choose to arrive on foot via the Inca Trail or by train and bus - it first appears impossible that such a vast Inca city could have been constructed here. Overlooked by towering, forest-clad mountains, the site was in fact so well-concealed that it took until 1911 for it to be discovered again, by the American explorer Hiram Bingham.
Whilst the access town to Machu Picchu (known as Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Pueblo) is something of a tourist trap, it does benefit from a pleasant riverside location and a good range of hotels. From the town it is an easy 15 minute journey by bus up to the ruins themselves and these depart regularly throughout the day. Once you have arrived at Machu Picchu itself and had the chance to take in its seemingly impossible location, you can explore many areas of this vast citadel on foot, taking in different viewpoints and its myriad tombs and temples. This experience is always brought to life if you are accompanied by an authorised guide, as they will recount some of the fascinating theories about the city and what the different areas were used for, as well as taking you to the very best places for photographs.

[content] => Peru’s northern Amazon is the place to head for river cruises. A number of excellent operators offer three, four and seven night itineraries departing from the gateway city of Iquitos and sailing through the wildlife-rich tributaries of the mighty Amazon river. This is a wonderful way to enjoy the rainforest as you can simply relax on deck and enjoy the passing jungle scenery, keeping an eye out for birds, monkeys and the occasional glimpse of pink and grey river dolphins. Excursions are generally taken on a small group basis, departing on a motorised canoe for a guided river safari through smaller tributaries teeming with wildlife, or disembarking completely to take a fascinating trek through the jungle. The majority of cruises will also offer the opportunity to visit a local community at some stage during your cruise. Though cruises are generally the more costly way to experience the rainforest (compared to a lodge-based stay in Peru’s Southern Amazon), they are almost always a memorable experience if your budget can stretch to it.

[content] => Though Peru is not particularly well-known for its beaches, the northern Pacific coast in and around the town of Mancora can be the ideal spot for a bit of relaxation before you return home. The desert surroundings of this region make the beach destinations relatively dry throughout much of the year, and you can find a reasonable choice of hotels here to suit most tastes and budgets. The most convenient way to get to the beaches is to take a short flight to one of the regional airports of Tumbes or Talara, and from here Mancora is a two-hour drive away. The town itself has something of a backpacker vibe and is a little down-at-heel in places, but a good range of bars and restaurants can be found in the centre. The best beaches are to be found outside the main centre of Mancora, and this is where the majority of our preferred hotels are located. Pocitas, for example, is a lovely stretch of beach to the south of the town, and its golden sands lend themselves to sunset walks and complete relaxation. If you are staying longer and wish to explore a little further afield, the town of Punta Sal is just a 20-minute drive away and is one of Peru’s best swimming beaches.

[content] => Though rarely included on first-time visits to the country, Peru’s northern provinces of La Libertad, Lambayeque and Amazonas play host to some lesser-visited gems which will delight those with a particular interest in history and archaeology. This region is home to vestiges of ancient civilisations such as the Moche and Chimu which pre-date the Incas by many hundreds of years.
An easy two-hour flight north from Lima takes you to the unassuming colonial city of Trujillo. Though the sights in Trujillo itself can easily be seen in an afternoon, it serves as the perfect gateway for a shorter archaeological circuit, with easy overland travel taking in the vast adobe city of Chan Chan, the Temples of the Sun and the Moon and the intriguing pyramids at El Brujo. This circuit finishes in Chiclayo, where the highlight is a visit to the Royal Tombs of Sipán and superb nearby museum. For those with even more time who wish to explore further north, the area around Chachapoyas in Amazonas province is a region of lush cloud forests, waterfalls and the pre-Inca walled city of Kuelap, a site that rivals Machu Picchu in its grandeur but attracts only a fraction of the visitors.

Peru is South America at its most iconic. Breathtaking landscapes stretching all the way from the Andes to the Amazon, colourful indigenous markets, colonial cities, ancient civilisations and, of course, the mighty Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. And, despite being a country known for its active pursuits, the majority of Peru’s attractions are remarkably accessible for travellers of all ages and fitness levels. Machu Picchu, for example, can be reached by a scenic train journey through a pristine mountain valley if trekking the Inca Trail does not appeal. And, there are some other superb rail journeys to be enjoyed across the country. Compact colonial cities such as Arequipa and Cusco can be easily explored on foot, all whilst marvelling at magnificent architecture and backdrops of Andean peaks before simply watching the world go by in an elegant pavement cafe. Even the Amazon, the world’s largest tropical rainforest, can be accessed with relative ease in Peru. A good network of flights serve the Amazonian gateway cities and from here you can choose a rainforest experience perfectly suited to your interests and preferences, whether that’s a luxurious river cruise or lodge offering a gentle introduction to the jungle, or a more intrepid adventure right into the heart of the jungle.
Peru has two main seasons: a dry season from May to September, and a wet season from October to April. While there are regional variations (the Amazon and northern coast have their own patterns), these two Andean seasons shape the weather in most of Peru’s popular spots.
These days, people visit Peru throughout the year. Travelling in the shoulder months (just before or after peak season) can be a great option — the weather is often still good, and you’ll find fewer crowds at key sites. We generally recommend avoiding January and February if you can, as these are the wettest months. The Inca Trail also closes every February for maintenance.
Peru’s high season, especially July and August, is very popular. If you’re planning to travel then, it’s important to book well in advance. Inca Trail permits and one-day hike tickets (from KM104) often sell out six to nine months ahead. Even if you’re not trekking, hotels in places like Cusco can fill quickly, especially those charming colonial-style stays with fewer rooms.
With restaurants like Ceviche and Lima London making waves on the UK foodie scene, Peruvian cuisine is finally getting the global attention it deserves. Lima is now a true culinary hotspot, boasting some of the best restaurants in the world. We always recommend carving out time for a food tour of the capital, it’s one of our favourite ways to experience the city.
Beyond the capital there are other superb restaurants to be found, and even informal dining can be a treat – grabbing a freshly baked empanada pasty from a street stall for example, followed by the sugary hit of a picaron, a type of sweet potato fritter.
Peruvian cuisine is shaped by its diverse regions: the Andes, the Amazon and the coast. Potatoes are everywhere (there are over 3,000 varieties in Peru), and a classic dish like lomo saltado – sautéed beef with potatoes – is served almost everywhere. You might also come across alpaca steak or guinea pig (cuy) on the menu, both worth trying at least once if you’re feeling adventurous.
The Amazon offers an incredible variety of tropical fruits, along with yucca, plantain and river fish. But it’s the coast that’s famous for seafood. Fresh ceviche is a must during your stay, don’t miss it!
When it comes to drinks, Peru’s national spirit is pisco, most famously served in a Pisco Sour. There’s a long-standing friendly rivalry with Chile over who makes the best version. You’ll also find chicha (a traditional corn beer) and plenty of refreshing local lagers to sample. While Peru does produce some wine, the quality can vary, so wine lovers best stick to Chilean or Argentinian bottles when dining out.
There are currently no direct flights from the UK to Lima, as British Airways has discontinued its previous non-stop service from London Gatwick. However, Peru remains well connected via a range of indirect flights, which often provide good value and convenient options, particularly for travellers departing from regional airports. You can fly to Lima from the UK with just one stop in cities such as Madrid, Amsterdam, Paris, or Bogotá, making the journey relatively straightforward and hassle-free.
UK passport holders do not require a visa to enter Peru, provided you plan to leave the country again within 90 days.
If you are flying to Peru via the USA, you’ll need to apply online for an ‘ESTA’ electronic travel authorisation, even if you are only in transit. This costs $14 per person, is valid for two years and should be applied for on the official Department of Homeland Security website: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/
You should contact your GP before booking a trip to Peru. We can provide some general guidelines, however we’re not medically trained, so it is essential to speak to a medical professional well in advance of your trip.
Zika Virus: Though instances of the Zika Virus in Peru have been few and isolated, the latest advice from the World Health Organisation recommends pregnant women or those planning to start a family to postpone travel to the country, and to practice safe sex up to six months after their return.
Yellow fever: If you are arriving in Peru from countries that have yellow fever, you may be asked to produce a certificate of vaccination against the disease. This is not an official entry requirement for Peru, but you should speak to your GP about whether they recommend the vaccination for your itinerary – particularly if you are visiting the Amazon. Many GPs will not recommend the vaccine for people over 60, so please discuss this with them if you are considering a trip to the Amazon.
Malaria: Many visitor attractions in Peru are low-risk or malaria free, but your GP will be able to advise whether anti-malarials are recommended for your specific itinerary (particularly if visiting the Amazon).
The best way to prevent transmission of all mosquito-borne diseases is to cover up. You should wear long trousers and sleeves while walking in the forests, at sunset, after rain showers and near standing water, and wear an insect repellent that contains a good percentage of DEET.
General: It's recommended that your general boosters for Diptheria, Polio, Tetanus and Hepatitis A are up-to-date before travel.
Some of Peru’s key visitor attractions are at high altitude. Machu Picchu rests at 2430 metres above sea level, Cusco at 3300 metres, Lake Titicaca and some areas around the Colca Canyon at approximately 3800 metres. As a result, many visitors will experience some mild symptoms when first at altitude such as a headache, fatigue and a dry throat. In most cases these symptoms pass relatively quickly and are rarely cause for concern, particularly if you stay well-hydrated, do not over-exert yourself and avoid heavy meals and alcohol during your first couple of days at altitude.
In rare cases, more severe altitude sickness (also known Acute Mountain Sickness) can develop, so if your symptoms persist or worsen then immediate medical attention should be sought.
If you are pregnant or taking the contraceptive pill, have high blood pressure, asthma, heart or lung conditions or any other underlying health condition you should consult your GP before booking your trip. Once you have booked, we recommend taking out comprehensive travel insurance that includes medial cover for all destinations you are visiting (some policies only cover destinations up to 2000 metres). You should always declare any pre-existing medical conditions to your insurer – some may be able to provide cover for these conditions for an additional premium.
We can design itineraries at a slower pace following a gentle route of acclimatisation if altitude is of particular concern.
Staying safe in Peru is generally a matter of common-sense guidelines that you would apply when travelling anywhere in the world. You should exercise caution in cities after dark and only take licensed taxis. Your local guide or hotel concierge will be able to provide more detailed recommendations specific to where you are staying.
The local currency in Peru is the Nuevo Sol, and at time of writing £1 GBP was worth 4 Soles. US dollars are also widely accepted in Peru – it is the second currency here, and you can choose to withdraw dollars from most ATMs. It is useful to bring some US dollars with you but ideally only the smaller denominations and notes in good condition. If you need to change money your guide will be able to recommend the best places, and most major debit and credit cards are widely accepted in Peru.
Tax of 18% will be added to bills in major restaurants and sometimes a service charge of 10%. Tipping in restaurants for good service is appreciated if service has not already been added to your bill. For guides, tipping is entirely discretionary but is a nice gesture if you have enjoyed your tour. US $5 – $10 per person would be around average for a regular tour, and you may also wish to tip drivers who have been with you for longer periods (though not as much as the guide).
We believe travel should be a force for good. That means exploring with open eyes, treading lightly, and respecting the people and places that make the world so special. Our code of conduct isn’t about rules, it’s simply a guide to help you travel thoughtfully, ethically, and with care. Because every small choice makes a big difference.
If you choose to trust us with your holiday, we’ll send you a “Travel Facts” document when confirming your booking. This includes useful facts and travel advice, such as restaurant recommendations, reading tips, basic language information, cultural traditions, climate information, brief historical overviews, and more. We feel that this offers a useful insight and can help you interact with local residents in a more sensitive, well-informed manner. Please do try to take the time to read this information before your visit, it’s worth the time!
A number of the countries in which we operate holidays are religious societies with a widely observed set of customs. Always respect these norms, particularly when visiting religious buildings.
To the best of our knowledge, all hotels, lodges, and camps within our portfolio operate stringent measures to minimise water usage. All of our destinations have issues with water supplies to a certain extent, so feel free to raise any possible wastage should you encounter it during your stay, either with the accommodation or with us upon your return.
Please ask permission before taking photographs of people, and respect their wishes if they are not happy to be photographed. We find that friendly requests and a smile are usually met with a ‘yes!’
Strive, where possible, to make your own contribution to environmental practices as you travel. This might include minimising your electricity usage, not smoking in protected areas, avoiding coral while snorkelling, and safely disposing of all litter (recycling where possible).
Where possible, try to purchase from local suppliers. This includes shopping for souvenirs, dining out at restaurants, and booking additional excursions during your free time. In areas where haggling is an accepted part of daily life, don’t be offended if you’re unable to obtain what you perceive as a fair price for an item.
We emphasise to local suppliers that our clients should never be taken on unsolicited shopping trips, but if this does happen, try to retain your sense of humour, provide a firm refusal to participate and do let us know about it on your return. We pass on all feedback from every trip undertaken with us to our relevant local suppliers, who all share our commitment to travelling with sensitivity.
Please don’t remove any indigenous items from their natural habitat and attempt to bring them home as a souvenir. This particularly applies to everything from coral, shells, plants and food in the natural world, to cultural artefacts and antiques.
If you’re unsure about anything relating to the above, please feel free to chat to us. We’ve travelled extensively in the country and will be more than happy to offer our considered advice.
