This scenic Quebec self-drive holiday is a lovely blend of French-Canadian culture, natural beauty and laid-back charm. From lively cities to peaceful mountains and riverside villages, it’s a route full of variety, with plenty of time to explore at your own pace.
Starting in Montréal, a city that effortlessly mixes old and new, you'll head into the Laurentian Mountains, a peaceful region packed full of rolling hills, lakes, and forests that are perfect for walking, paddling or just soaking it all in. Then it’s on to Québec City, where its cobbled streets, historic buildings and café-lined squares give it a distinctly European feel. From there, follow the St. Lawrence River to Charlevoix, then continue on to Tadoussac, one of the best places in Canada for whale watching. Finish in La Baie, tucked along the Saguenay Fjord, where dramatic scenery and local culture make a memorable spot to finish up your trip.
This holiday is a great choice if you’re looking for a self-drive route that combines culture, countryside and coastal views. Plus, if you’ve got more time to spare, you can always hop on the overnight train to Nova Scotia for a whole new adventure.

Drive on to the Mauricie area, known for woodland scenery and peaceful lakes. This is a good day to reset and unwind, with time for a swim in summer, a gentle trail, or simply relaxing in a quieter, more remote setting.
Continue northeast along the St Lawrence to Tadoussac, one of Canada’s best-known whale watching hubs. Settle in, enjoy the coastal setting, and if timings work, you could take an evening stroll to the dunes or viewpoints over the bay.

We choose Holiday Architects so we have a chance to work with an expert on an region, who will combine their knowledge with listening to what we enjoy and are hoping to get out of a particular holiday. Paul really delivered on a wonderful trip to Canada for us this autumn. We had a brilliant balance between exploring cities and their culture and architecture, with some great opportunities to see beautiful fall landscapes and eat some amazing food thrown in for good measure. Highly recommended.

This time we embarked on a fly/drive tour around the west of Canada and the holiday build was excellent. Our point of contact was Paul Turner. We received an initial itinerary based on Paul's local knowledge and experience, and then over 3-4 phone calls, we honed it down in detail to our requirements and his recommendations. The actual holiday was excellent, everything went as planned with no hiccups. Canada is like the Lake District on steroids and will blow you away, the roads are great to drive on and very well signed. The people very friendly and accommodating. From my experience Holiday Architects have got the right model, they take the stress and time out of a lot of the planning, have excellent customer care, great follow up and very flexible with a budget you set them. Try them and I think you will agree.
