Black Bear Observation is a brilliant, nature-led experience that combines gentle exploration with a deeper understanding of Québec’s boreal landscapes. Guided by a naturalist, you’ll spend time in the Rivière-à-Mars canyon area, learning how the local ecosystems fit together and what makes this habitat so well suited to wildlife.
The experience is a mix of an easy forest walk and time out on the water, with stops at viewpoints where your guide interprets the landscape and the animals that live here, including black bear, beaver and loon. You’ll also hear the Indigenous names for key species and how they connect to the stories and knowledge of the region, adding a cultural layer that makes the outing feel much richer than a simple “spot the wildlife” trip.
A real highlight is travelling by rabaska, a traditional voyageur-style canoe, across Lake Côme, a setting shaped by beavers and wonderfully calm and atmospheric. It’s a peaceful way to take in the scenery and watch for movement along the shoreline, with your guide helping you notice the small details you’d otherwise miss.
Tours run seasonally from early June to early October. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but this is a thoughtful, well-supported outing, with kit like mosquito jackets and rain gear available if conditions call for it, so you can stay comfortable and focus on the experience. It’s best suited to adults and older children, as under 5s aren’t permitted.
