Sucrerie de la Montagne is a wonderfully characterful, traditional Québec maple sugar estate, set deep within a 120-acre maple forest on Mont Rigaud, roughly halfway between Ottawa and Montréal. It’s a place that feels like stepping back in time, with a working sugar shack still producing maple syrup using the traditional method, and an overall atmosphere that leans into heritage, simplicity and countryside charm rather than modern hotel polish.
Accommodation is in a handful of cosy, wilderness-style cabins, all deliberately rustic and full of character. Maisonnette d’amour is a snug option with a wood stove, a double bed on the main floor and two single beds upstairs, plus a bathroom with a shower. Maisonnette Trappeur and Maisonnette du Bûcheron are classic log cabins with a double bed on the main floor, two double beds upstairs, and a fieldstone fireplace, with bathrooms that include a tub and shower. Maisonnette du Sous-Bois has its own quirks too, with a fieldstone fireplace and a double bed upstairs, plus a main-floor bathroom with a shower and a clawfoot bathtub upstairs, which is a lovely touch if you fancy a long soak after a day outside.
The experience here goes well beyond just the cabins. On site you’ve got a restaurant, general store and a fieldstone bakery, and you can build your stay around one of their packages, which typically combines the cabin night with a visit to the maple syrup production facility and bakery. If you want the full traditional feel, the Bear Package includes an evening meal plus breakfast, while the Chouette Package includes breakfast. The evening meal is served family-style and is very much a classic sugar shack feast, with plenty of hearty, traditional dishes and, of course, maple syrup at the centre of things.
Breakfast, WiFi and parking are included, keeping the practical side easy, while the setting and the traditions make it a standout stop if you want something that feels distinctly Québécois and a bit different from a standard countryside inn.
