Your tailor-made holiday will be as unique as you are. These itineraries are just a starting point, a bit of inspiration to show what’s possible. Your own trip all starts with a conversation with one of our Morocco experts, who’ll take the time to understand what matters most to you and design the perfect holiday to match.
The "Imperial Cities" of Morocco are four cities that have all at one time been the capital of the country. Marrakesh, Fez, Meknes and Rabat form the backbone of this great Morocco by rail holiday itinerary, designed for those interested in history, culture, and being fully immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of an ancient country. We've also included some time spent in coastal Tangier, as well as exploring the Hassan II Mosque of Casablanca. You might only be away for a fortnight, but you'll experience a lot of history on this Morocco holiday.
Travelling by rail in Morocco is fast, full of colonial history, and a little bit romantic. It's a great way to see some of the beautiful scenery all too often missed between the cities. We’ve included several train journeys in this holiday idea, giving you a real flavour of Moroccan rail travel as you’re whisked from stop to stop. You’ll also enjoy the perfect balance between sightseeing adventures, private tours with knowledgeable local guides and plenty of time at leisure for you to explore (or put your feet up) independently. As always with us, this is just a suggestion. Give us a call and we’ll tinker and tweak every detail until it’s perfect for you.
Here's a summary of what you might get up to day-to-day on this Morocco holiday. As always, this is just an idea. Every single day of your holiday will be tailored to suit you.
Today, your adventure begins with a flight into Marrakesh where your friendly private driver will be waiting to greet you at the airport. You'll be whisked away to your very own traditional Moroccan riad tucked away in the heart of the medina for the next three nights.
Today, your guide will give you a private tour of the history behind the medina walls. You'll visit the old city and, most notably, one of the most visited cultural landmarks, the Saadian Tombs – an exemplary introduction to the 16th-century design that shapes much of the architecture you’ll see in the city. Built on power and dynasty, it's hard not to immerse yourself in the grandeur of this past relic. Your private guide will share stories of the Kasbah Mosque and show you the intricate stucco carvings found in its chambers, which have been passed down through generations.
Take today in your stride and explore the more peaceful and wholesome sides of Marrakesh at your own pace. The city boasts beautiful gardens and wonderful museums to explore. If you'd like some recommendations or a little more structure to your day, just chat to us and we'll suggest the best experiences to suit you.
All aboard! Set aside 2.5 to 3 hours as you travel up to the cosmopolitan capital of Casablanca. Here, you’ll experience the more modern and refined side of Morocco. At first glance, this metropolis is bordered by fine-dining restaurants and high-end shopping boutiques. However, you’ll soon notice a blend of traditional Moroccan and contemporary French architecture scattered throughout the city, derivative of its art deco history and the expansion of French influence in the 1900s. You'll visit the incredible Hassan II Mosque with a local guide, before being driven to Rabat, where you'll spend the next two nights.
If you loved Casablanca, then you'll be a fan of Rabat, too. Rabat has quite a charming European feel and look with its wide sidewalks. Nose dive into the history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site on a private tour of the main sites with a knowledgeable local guide. The picturesque kasbah and the atmospheric Chellah ruins will be highlights!
Today, you'll take another train journey to the imperial city of Meknes. From one imperial city to the next, you'll uncover masses of culture and unearth the history that lies behind the lining of this city's walls. You'll be guided on a short tour around the must-see spots of this 11th-century military settlement, before heading off on a wonderful wine tasting experience. The perfect opportunity to toast your adventure so far.
Today, you'll drive onwards to the historical and stylish city of Fez. Along the way, you'll stop off at the stunning hilltop town of Moulay Idriss, a shrine to the founder of Morocco, where there's plenty of history to uncover. Next up, you'll visit the Roman ruins of Volubilis and take a little time to explore the ancient archaeological site. Once you've got a real feel for the places, you'll journey onwards to Fez.
You'll enjoy a tour of Fez el-Bali this morning, the oldest part of the city, dating back to the 9th century. You'll visit the tanneries and the silk dyers, learning all about this age-old tradition that's still very much alive today. You'll also take in Fez el-Jadid, which is the newer part of the city, ticking off some of the historical sites as well as the handicraft workshops that make this city famous.
Relax and explore at your own pace today, or take the opportunity to unwind in the peaceful oasis of your riad. If you're keen for some more exploring and fancy a trip outside the city, we can arrange a tour of the Middle Atlas and some nearby Berber villages. Both experiences we'd hugely recommend on any Morocco holiday. As always, your holiday is yours alone, and we'll tailor it to be perfect for you.
Today, another train ride awaits as you'll ride the rails to Tangier, a journey which will take between four and six hours. When you get to the other end, you'll meet your guide and head off on a private tour of the city, taking in the nearby Hercules Caves as well as the kasbah and old medina.
We've left today clear for you to do your own thing. You could head to the nearby whitewashed coastal town of Asilah, or stay in Tangier to further explore the medina and stroll along the port. If you'd like a little more structure or some recommendations on the best things to see or do, just ask, that's what we're here for!
Your Morocco holiday comes to an end today and you'll be transferred to Tangier Airport in time for your flight home. Until next time, Morocco.
