Colombo City Tour (Half Day)

No tour is truly complete without a tour of its capital city. Colombo, despite being unprepossessing at first glance, offers visitors an insight into Sri Lanka’s turbulent history, its varied religious communities as well as the modern and cosmopolitan side of the country that you are starting to see today. Our half-day tour of Colombo takes in all the major sites within the city including the area known as ‘Fort’, aptly named, as it was once a Dutch and Portuguese fort. The tour also passes through the frenetic open air Pettah Market and takes in numerous temples and mosques, which scatter the city. If time permits your guide will also take you to Independence Square and Cinnamon Gardens.

Culinary Workshop at Upali’s by Nawaloka

This fun culinary workshop explains the complexities of Sri Lankan cooking, which can often seem overwhelming to foreigners. The workshop is based in Upali’s by Nawaloka, an authentic restaurant in Colombo, that specialises in classic and homely Sri Lankan dishes. The workshop helps you master some of these classic recipes so that you are able to whip up authentic Sri Lankan staples such as string hoppers, roti, and pittu when you return back home. The chefs will walk you though a brief history of Sri Lankan cuisine and will teach you how to identify the spices. You will learn how to roll your own roti, mix your own sambol and spice your own traditional curry. At the end you will all sit down to enjoy the feast together. The class starts at 10.30am and lasts around 2 hours, just in time for lunch. Please note this tour is subject to availability at the time of booking.

Bevis Bawa's Brief Garden

Sitting just 10km inland from Bentota, Brief Garden is a glorious garden with a villa at its centre, once owned by Bevis Bawa. Bevis was the hedonistic artist and older brother of Geoffrey Bawa, who lived in the villa for many years during which time he designed and landscaped the gardens, which we now see today. Many influential people stayed with him during his time, including Lawrence Olivier and Donald Friend, an Australian artist. The villa is brimming with art, artefacts and sculptures, and despite the gardens being absolutely divine; we feel the house is the most fascinating part of the grounds. The gardens are exotic and beautifully landscaped: think frangipani, iron gates, and elaborate water features. The paths lead you to hidden spaces filled with oversized pots and sculptures. The caretaker guides the tour, providing a fantastic insight into the life of Bevis and his wonderful creations. The tour normally lasts 1-2 hours.

Highlights of Ella Tour

  The area surrounding Ella and Bandarawela is incredibly scenic; carpeted with undulating tea plantations, the region is home to some of the country’s most beautiful waterfalls. This tour takes you away from the town of Bandarawela and out towards Ella where you’ll get to enjoy the famous Ravana Falls, one of the widest falls found on the island, soaring 25 metres high. You will also get the opportunity to visit the Demodara Nine Arch Bridge, as well as Little Adam’s Peak. The 20-minute climb up Little Adam’s Peak means you get to experience incredible views of Ella Gap.

Tour of Jaffna

Jaffna is closer to southern India than Colombo, which has unsettled the area for centuries. Our half-day tour of Jaffna explores its turbulent and historic past that spans Sri Lanka’s colonial era and even further back.  As part of your tour you will explore Manthrimanai: the remains of the palace of King Sangilian who was the last King of Jaffna. You will visit Point Pedro, which is the most northerly point of Sri Lanka. You will visit Nelavarai Bottomless Well, a natural underground water well with many enthralling legends that your guide will explain. You will visit Keerimalai Springs, said to healing properties. Later you will proceed to Kandarodai, where excavations have unearthed over 50 small stupas constructed close together. Some historians believe that Kandarodai marks the spot where Buddha landed on his second visit to the island. The tour also takes you to Jaffna Fort, built by the Portuguese in 1618. The fort was badly damaged during the war; however work is now in progress to restore this historical site.  If time permits your guide will also take you to Jaffna library. Built in many stages from 1933, it became a repository of archival material written in palm leaf manuscripts as well as historical documents and newspapers that have been published over hundreds of years. The tour should take approximately 4-5 hours.

Bundala National Park Bird Watching

Bundala National Park is unknown to most visitors, but it’s regarded as Sri Lanka’s foremost destination for bird watching. The 62 sq. km park is an internationally important wintering ground for migratory water birds, attracting hundreds of species year round. It’s a beautiful labyrinth of lagoons, waterways, and dunes providing the ideal sanctuary for water birds as well as other animals. Our 4x4 jeep safari takes you into the park with an experienced driver and tracker to go in search of birds such as the greater flamingo, peacock, Eurasian spoonbill, and the incredible painted stork. Both elephant and leopard can also be found in the park, however sightings are rare.

Minneriya National Park Safari

Minneriya National Park sits to the north east of Sigiriya and offers a welcome change of scenery from the ancient ruins that dominate the area. The park is home to the large and ancient Minneriya Tank, and it boasts an enormous variety of habitat and wildlife, covered in dry tropical forest, grasslands and wetlands. However, its main draw and principle attraction are its elephants. They are found in large numbers throughout the year, although most numerous from July to September when the small waterholes have dried up - this annual wildlife phenomenon is called the 'Elephant Gathering'. This afternoon’s jeep safari will take you into the park with an experienced guide/tracker who will know the best locations for elephant sightings. Please note that the elephants move freely between Minneriya National Park, Kadulla National Park and Eco Park, therefore your chauffeur guide will be in contact with the local guides and trackers before hand so that you arrive at the most probable location that day. If you are lucky you may also get to see sambar deer, spotted deer, macaque, and purple-faced langur monkeys as well. There are also 160 species of bird that have been recorded in the park, which your guide will help point out.  Your afternoon jeep safari will last approximately three hours.

Whale and Dolphin Watching from Trincomalee

Between May and early September both blue and sperm whales can be found close to the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, nearby to Trincomalee. Sri Lanka has emerged as one of the world’s major whale watching destinations and whale sightings are fairly likely as the whales annually migrate from the Bay of Bengal.  Blue whales are the largest animal on earth, and also one of the most endangered, so this is an incredible opportunity to see them close by. The best way to enjoy these magnificent creatures, along with the resident spinner dolphins, is by boat. Our whale-watching trip takes you out for approximately four-five hours in the morning, so there is an early start but hopefully it will be worth it!

Tokyo is often considered the biggest metropolis on the planet – and we love it. For all of its neon lights and progressive technology, its historic soul is very much intact with countless temples, shrines and gardens dotted around the city. ☑ The spiritual heart of Japan, Kyoto is bursting with shrines and history. Step back in time with a bike ride down the ancient streets of the Gion neighbourhood (keep your eyes peeled for Geisha!), head to the bright red gates of the Fushimi Inari Shrine and even test your sword skills at a Ninja workshop . ☑ Experience a different side of Japanese life and culture with some time in Takayama . The perfect base from which to visit to beautiful, rural countryside (the Christmas-card village of Shirakawago is very close by!) – the antique wooden buildings will charm you in no time at all. Japan holidays     Without doubt the must exotic and alluring getaway you can have within a 4-hour flight from the UK, it’s no wonder that Morocco is always a popular one with our clients, snapping up 8.2% of 2023 booking so far.   Morocco holiday highlights ☑ Spend a day or two on the golden sands of the Erg Chebbi. It’s one of only two places in Morocco where you can see the start of the great Sahara Desert. Take a camel ride across the dunes and sleep under the stars. A highlight of any Morocco holiday for sure. ☑ Explore the bohemian streets, pretty medina and blue-washed walls of Chefchaouen . Perfect for photography lovers, this stunning town is set against a backdrop of mountains with so many trails to explore! ☑ For a real slice of authentic Morocco, venture into the High Atlas Mountains and spend some time with the Berbers . There are trails to explore, mountains to climb, fresh mint tea to drink and home-cooked traditional dinners with local families to enjoy. Morocco holidays     Sri Lanka had a bit of a rocky start to the year, but we’re delighted to say it’s fully back on the holiday radar now! With 7% of booked holidays next year visiting this jewel-shaped island, we’re so excited for more of our clients to fall in love with all it has to offer.   Sri Lanka holiday highlights ☑ Take on of the most picturesque train rides on earth up into the rolling tea hills in the middle of the country. Make the most of the slight drop in temperature and take a hike to Lipton’s Seat, enjoy a tour of a local tea factory and indulge in High Tea at the Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya. ☑ Dig out your binoculars for a safari at Yala National Park . With a varied ecosystem made up of monsoon forests, grasslands, sandy beaches and wetlands – the animal sightings are brilliant here. Plus, said to be home to one of the highest concentrations of leopard on earth, it’s THE place to go if you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of one of the illusive cats. ☑ Spend some time in Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle to get a taste of the country’s rich history. Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress, explore the Dambulla Cave Temples and take a bike ride around the ancient city ruins of Polonnaruwa. Sri Lanka holiday     Namibia has been having a bit of a moment recently and – quite rightly – growing in popularity as a Southern Africa holiday destination. An impressive 6.6% of HA holidays next year are heading to this otherworldly landscape…   Namibia holiday highlights ☑ One of the big hitters of Namibia holidays, the sand seas of the Namib Desert (the oldest desert on earth don’t you know!) around Sossusvlei are something very special. The graceful curves of the massive glowing dunes stand in stark contrast to the other-worldly white pans “vleis”, with dead trees and cracked mud, that lay in their shadow. ☑ The Skeleton Coast forms a division between mainland Namibia and the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s perfect for wildlife spotting, with orangutan, Pygmy elephant and clouded leopard spotted frequently. The area is strongly protected, and access tightly restricted, so make sure you factor in a stay at the beautiful Borneo Rainforest Lodge to experience it for yourself. ☑ Visit the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in the heart of Sepilok. Set amidst lush rainforest and explored via a series of elevated walkways, this is a brilliant place to come for a taste of Borneo wildlife – with the chance to do good along the way. ☑ The island paradise of Gaya Island is the perfect place to unwind on your Borneo holiday after all of the orangutan-spotting excitement. White-sand beaches, fringed with lush palms on one side and turquoise waters the other. Dive on in. Borneo holidays     Canada is vast, diverse and packed full of extraordinarily wide range of scenery and experiences. Whether you’re after beautiful beaches, snowy mountains, wildlife encounters, adrenaline-pumping outdoor adventures or a tranquil lake cruise – it’s got you covered. That 5.2% of bookings are in for a real treat…   Canada holiday highlights ☑ Take one of the World’s most iconic journeys, a train ride on the Rocky Mountain Express through the towering snow-capped peaks of the the Rocky Mountains. This two-day rail journey takes you all the way from Vancouver to beautiful Jasper. ☑ Experience the power of Mother Nature at full force with a visit to Niagara Falls . You can take a boat ride right up to the falls, fly over the top of it or even walk right behind the plummeting water. We have a real soft spot for this country, its beauty, sights, and its warm, resilient people.   Cambodia holiday highlights ☑ Fall in love with the charms of Siem Reap . Obviously you have to spend some time exploring the ancient temple complex of Angkor Wat , but there’s so much more on offer here. Take a street food tour by vespa and enjoy some of the many sophisticated restaurants and chic bars popping up all over the town. Don’t miss an evening at the Phare Circus either, such talent! ☑ Sun yourself on the secret islands of the south coast . With powdery white sand beaches, lapped with clear blue waters, these small islands boast dramatic headlands and jungle forests. They’re also home to luxurious hideaways perfect for a slice of well deserved R&R after time spent soaking up the history and culture of Cambodia. ☑ Journey up into the Cardamom Mountains . This remote virgin rainforest is one of the last remaining habitats for Asian elephants, bears, tigers and the Siamese crocodile. With deserted river islands, thundering waterfalls and Wildlife Sanctuaries to visit, the Cardamom Mountains would be a great addition to any Cambodia holiday. Cambodia holidays     Oman is such a unique holiday destination – and we can’t wait to send 3.5% of our 2023 clients there. With cities, deserts, rich culture, mountain villages and so much history to explore, it has all the makings of a great adventure for all the family.   Oman holiday highlights ☑ Start your adventure with some time in the capital of Muscat . Old Muscat and Muttrah make up the historical heart of the city, with palaces to explore, forts to walk around, giant chandeliers to be wowed by and old souqs to get lost in. With beach resorts nearby and the option to take a sunset Dhow cruise , too, there’s something for everyone. ☑ It might be just a few hours from Muscat, but the Wahiba Sands feel anything but. Stretching nearly 200 miles from north to south, you’ll find towering golden dunes, deep valleys, local Bedouins and an awful lot of camels here. What’s more, with some beautiful tented camps to choose from, you’ll be relaxing in comfort under the starry desert skies. ☑ Venture up towards the Hajar Mountains and explore the sheer canyons, terraced villages and forts around Nizwa . You’ll feel a million miles away from day-to-day life here – a real insight into rural Omani life. Oman holidays     Whether you visit the North Island, the South Island, or both, New Zealand has all of the makings of an adventure worthy of your 2023 holidays. With 2.4% of booked holidays heading here, we’re already excited to see the travel snaps.     New Zealand holiday highlights ☑ Get away from it all and spend some time in Abel Tasman National Park . All of New Zealand is staggeringly beautiful, but there’s something extra special about this region. With sheltered turquoise waters perfect for kayaking and so many incredible walking trails with a more breathtaking view waiting around every corner – it’s a must. ☑ Be captivated by the marine life playground that is Kaikoura . This is THE place to go to spot giant sperm whales, playful dusky dolphins, seals, sweeping albatross and so much more. ☑ Tucked away in the far south-western corner of the South Island, you’ll find the Fjordland National Park. When to go to Sri Lanka

Welcome to the pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka! This jewel shaped island is packed full of stunning landscapes, rich history, vibrant culture and smiling locals – all waiting to welcome you. If you’re wondering when to go to Sri Lanka, you’ve stumbled across the right place. Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, you just might need to plan your holiday to dodge the monsoons, depending on what time of year you intend to visit. Sri Lanka experiences two key monsoon seasons every year; the ‘Yala’ and the ‘Maha ’. So, this means the weather is very different dependent on what side of the island you visit and when. But that’s where we come in! The Maha Monsoon – (October/November to February): This monsoon is less severe but brings rains to the east coast. The months of November and December are the wettest!       The best time to visit Sri Lanka Sri Lanka in January Summary: Warm/dry/sunny, great for outdoor activities, very busy in late January January is lovely in Sri Lanka, with warm and sunny weather on the south and west coasts. The rains of the maha monsoon will still be hitting the east coast, so these beaches are best avoided if you’re keen to avoid any sogginess. January is also an ideal month to pair your Sri Lanka holiday with an unforgettable beach escape in the Maldives. That doesn’t sound too shabby to us! Events: Don’t miss the colourful celebrations of the Tamil Thai Pongal festival in January. This Hindu harvest festival is celebrated by Tamils across India and Sri Lanka and showcases the rich cultural heritage of the country.   Sri Lanka in February Summary: Beautiful beach weather, great for wildlife tours and outdoor adventures February is one of the best months to experience the magic of Sri Lanka, and our clients always love it. With dry and sunny weather across most of the island, it’s a brilliant time to head off exploring the ancient ruins in the Cultural Triangle, hiking through the lush highlands, and relaxing on the pristine beaches. Events: February is the month of Sri Lanka’s Independence Day (4th February), with celebrations taking place across the country. A note from Rebecca February has always been such a popular month for my clients travelling to Sri Lanka. It’s a month where I get to design long, complex 2-4 week itineraries that take in so much of the country. I love it! Get in touch with Rebecca       Sri Lanka in March Summary: Fab for blue whale-watching, dry across the country, nice and warm in the hill country Heading off on a Sri Lanka holiday in March is a great idea. The south and west coasts are basking in glorious sunshine and temperatures above 30°C and it’s one of the warmest months of the year to visit the Hill Country, too. What’s more, the beginning of the month is the best time of the year to spot blue whales as they feast on krill in the waters off the coast. The north-east maha monsoon is over, so March is also dry on the east coast. This means, you can visit ANY of the country’s incredible beaches, and should be treated to beautiful weather. Top tip: If you’re thinking of combining a Sri Lanka adventure, with a bucket-list-ticking trip to the Maldives, March is a great month to choose. A note from Rebecca March is one of my favourite months in Sri Lanka. Everywhere should be sunny and dry. Plus, if you want to get away from the crowds, you can head to the beautifully remote beaches of the east whilst they’re still lovely and peaceful! Get in touch with Rebecca       Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Sri Lanka Sri Lanka in April Summary: Great month for family adventures, perfect for outdoor adventures, tag on a trip to the Maldives April is a good month to visit Sri Lanka. The beginning of the month is generally dry and sunny, but as the month goes on, the dry season comes to an end in the south-west. Things can start to get a little humid (especially around the Cultural Triangle) as the yala monsoon rolls in. April is one of the best months of the year to visit the tea hills though. Kandy and the beautiful towns across the Hill Country all experiencing lovely weather and pleasant temperatures. During the day the temperatures hover around the mid 20s (perfect for hiking!), and don’t drop too much in the evenings either. Events: The Sinhalese / Tamil New Year takes place in the middle of April. Top tip from Rebecca April is a brilliant month to combine your Sri Lanka holiday with some luxurious sun-soaking in the Maldives ! Get in touch with Rebecca       Sri Lanka in May Summary: Beautifully quiet, inter-monsoon season, stunning on the east-coast beaches May is one of the quietest months of the year to visit Sri Lanka and a brilliant time to visit weather-wise, too. Nestled between the two monsoon seasons, you could well be lucky with the weather wherever you choose to go. The beautifully undeveloped beaches on the east coast will be wonderful in May. Temperatures are often 30ºC plus and you’ll be treated to many hours of glorious sunshine. By the end of May, the yala monsoon has arrived on the south/southwest coasts as well as the central regions, so a raincoat may be needed. However, the rains come and go, and they’re often broken up with lovely sunny spells in between.   Jaffna, Sri Lanka Sri Lanka in June Summary: Lovely and quiet, great for wildlife tours, beautiful in the north/east June is a brilliant month to visit the north and the beaches in the east of Sri Lanka. Head up to explore the culture in Jaffna and then unwind on the beautiful, remote beaches on the east coast. The animals are usually quite active in June, so it’s a great month of the year to head to one of the national parks for wildlife tours and safari. Sri Lanka in July Summary: Good throughout most of the island, northern beaches are wonderful, last chance for great wildlife viewing at Yala July is a great month of the year to explore the majority of Sri Lanka, with temperatures teetering around 30°C throughout the country. The east coast is enjoying beautiful sunshine, plus, the southern yala monsoons are petering out slightly.   A note from Rebecca July is perfect for top-notch wildlife viewing at Yala, Wilpattu and Minneriya National Parks. So, it’s definitely worth factoring in a safari or two if you can. Get in touch with Rebecca       Sri Lanka in August Summary: Brilliant month for a family holiday, northern beaches are beautiful, fab for bird-watching, leopard spotting and there are even sloth bears in Wilpattu National Park! August is a great month for families to visit Sri Lanka. By the time August rolls around, the yala monsoons have temporarily subsided, making the southern beaches a great choice for long, sunny beach days. However, if beach days are top of the agenda, we’d recommend the east coast as a safer bet weather-wise in August. In short, despite the occasional showers, the beautifully warm temperatures make August a great month to explore what Sri Lanka has to offer. Events: Whale-watching season is in full swing off the east coast. We hugely recommend heading to Trincomalee for a boat trip to spot these ocean giants if you can. Top tip from Rebecca August is one of the best months to head to Minneriya National Park. Being dry season in this region, elephants flock to the Minneriya tank in huge numbers in search of water. The result is the largest gathering of Asian elephants visible anywhere on earth. It really was such an incredible sight. Get in touch with Rebecca       The Minneriya Elephant Gathering, Minneriya National Park, Sri Lanka Sri Lanka in September Summary: Things are getting quieter, good deals, sunny eastern beaches September is a great time to head to the north and the east coasts of Sri Lanka. You can be lucky with lower prices and fewer tourists. Plus, the elephants still tend to be gathering by around the water tank in Minneriya National Park – so, witnessing this wildlife phenomenon could make a great addition to your Sri Lanka holiday plans. Events/worth noting: Yala National Park usually closes for the month of September. This is to allow for yearly maintenance, and to let the wildlife roam undisturbed by tourists following a long and busy season. (We love this!) Top tip from Rebecca September is one of my favourite months to design Sri Lanka holidays for. Don’t miss the adorable sloth bears in Wilpattu National Park. And, head to the Pigeon Island Marine Reserve off the coast of Trincomalee for a spot of snorkelling. Would you look at the colour of that water! Get in touch with Rebecca       Sri Lanka in October Summary: Unpredictable and a bit wet . October/November is the classic inter-monsoon season in Sri Lanka, when both the yala and maha monsoons overlap. October is an unpredictable month for a Sri Lanka holiday. It’s generally one of the wettest months of the year to visit, with the south-west ‘yala’ monsoons taking longer to fade in the south and the north-east ‘maha’ monsoon on its way, rains are likely across the whole island. However, less-favourable weather usually means less tourists. So the sites will be quiet and there may be some good deals to snap up if you don’t mind a few downpours. Sri Lanka in November Summary: Inter-monsoon season, so still quite soggy! The yala monsoons are taking longer and longer to clear through these days, so November is still a little questionable wherever you plan to visit in Sri Lanka. We recommend aiming for late November if you want more guarantee of better weather.     Sri Lanka in December Summary: Lovely and quiet at the beginning of the month, great weather, fab for outdoor adventures and family holidays Mid-December is the start of high season on Sri Lanka’s south and southwest coasts. The weather in the hill country is also starting to dry out a little. It’s World Animal Day! So, we thought we’d share 9 of our favourite wildlife holiday ideas to inspire you to take a walk on the wild side – responsibly of course! So, whether you want to mingle with mammals, frolic with fishes, meander with marsupials or potter with primates, we’ve got you covered. Our wonderful world is full to bursting with phenomenal wildlife, just waiting to be responsibly encountered and ready to feature in your holiday highlights forevermore. Here are 9 wildlife holiday ideas that are all about ambling with the animals.   1. Trek with the mountain gorillas in Uganda Home to approximately 400 mountain gorillas, your chances of a life-changing gorilla encounter are high in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park . However, planning ahead is a must here: Tight regulations on gorilla tracking permits ensure visitor numbers are limited and the gorillas’ habitat and space are protected. This control over the numbers though, means that you’re guaranteed an exclusive experience even in peak travel season.     2. Elephants, monkeys, birdlife and whales on South Africa’s Garden Route South Africa has to feature on any list of wildlife holiday ideas. Whether you’re keen for a safari to spot the Big 5, a whale watching trip to get as close as possible to the giants of the deep, or a fun-filled family day out at one of the many wildlife sanctuaries, you’re in for a treat here. Minneriya National Park sits to the northeast of Sigiriya and offers a welcome change of scenery from the ancient ruins that dominate the area. The park is home to the large and ancient Minneriya Tank, and it boasts an enormous variety of habitat and wildlife, covered in dry tropical forest, grasslands and wetlands. Its main draw and principle attraction are the elephants, particularly during the dry season. Between July and September, when the smaller water holes have dried up, the elephants gather in huge numbers, more than anywhere else on earth. Explore the jungles of Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula Quite simply the best place to see wildlife in all of Costa Rica, the wild beauty of the Osa Peninsula is unmatched anywhere else in the country. This isolated and remote outcrop of land juts out into Pacific Ocean is blanketed in dense rainforest offering the most intense biodiversity in all Central America. It’s a little tricky to get to, but the rewards make the effort more than worth it. This wildlife holiday idea has been carefully designed with real wildlife enthusiasts in mind, following a route that showcases a wide variety of natural habitats and some of the best reserves in the country. The Corcovado National Park receives regular acclaim for the sheer number of bird and mammal species recorded here. And exploring the jungle throughout the peninsula provides opportunities to spot all four of Costa Rica’s species of monkey, two-toed sloths and other curious mammals such as anteaters and tayras. Sepilok in particular, is famous as one of the world’s best orangutan viewing locations, home to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre where the animals roam freely in the rainforest and often swing by the centre at feeding time, allowing visitors a heart-warming encounter. Nearby there is also the option to visit the excellent Sun Bear Conservation Centre , and Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary where you will learn more about the vital part these creatures play in the ecosystem and the efforts made to protect them. Read more >   9. Track the endangered black rhino in Namibia Namibia is an enlightened eco-tourism destination and their Save the Rhino Trust is one of Africa’s most celebrated conservation bodies. Visiting the Desert Rhino Camp in the Palmwag area of Damaraland to track the magnificent black rhino on foot, really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you’ll feel honoured to have. The 450,000-hectare Palmwag Concession is a remote and very special place, home to Africa’s largest remaining population of endangered black rhino. Guests at Desert Rhino Camp have the privileged opportunity to track these fabulous animals with a skilled guide, often accompanied by a researcher for the Save The Rhino Trust, a pioneering conservation body in Palmwag for close to 20 years. The excursion begins with a leisurely nature drive, while trackers work in the background to locate rhinos. They will then radio your driver who takes you to within a short distance of the animal without causing disturbance through engine noise. Then comes the really exciting bit, as you leave the vehicle and walk as close to the rhino as possible, without startling it or causing any danger to human life and limb! This is a thrilling activity and a real treat, genuinely one of the most unique and exciting things you can do in Southern Africa. Perched on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, the revered town of Galle can at first glance appear colourless, more like a commercial centre than a UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, as you pass through the Fort gates you are transported back in time and into Sri Lanka’s best-preserved colonial landscape. UNESCO describes it as ‘the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and Southeast Asia’ and we don’t disagree.


Galle illustrates a fantastic marriage of European architecture and South Asian traditions, not only from the 16th to 19th century, but also today as there’s a vibrant community still living and working within Galle Fort. The 36-hectare fort was built in 1663 as has been heavily influenced by Dutch, Portuguese, and later by the British. The low-rise wide streets are lined with colonial villas; each with its own garden or veranda is testament to its European heritage. There’s surprisingly not a huge amount to do in Galle, apart from a few museums and boutiques. It’s best enjoyed by ambling through the streets, sipping a cup of coffee in one of the trendy coffee shops, and enjoying views of the ocean from its ancient ramparts.


Galle is a convenient two-hour drive south of Colombo and a four-hour drive from Yala. Most stay in accommodation within the fort walls or a short drive away on the outskirts of the city.

Sri Lanka’s wild south coast is mostly less developed than its west coast and the beaches near Galle in the southwest. It is the perfect area for those looking to completely switch off, enjoy long beach walks, and get away from the crowds.


Tangalle is a great place to explore the area’s highlights, including the Mulkirigala Temple and Hummanaya Blowhole. A particular treat is an evening visit to Rekawa Beach, highly treasured for the marine turtles that lay eggs here each night - we experienced this on our most recent trip and it was an incredible sight! The beaches here are untouched and you can walk for miles, only bumping into locals taking their dogs for a cooling dip. The current can be strong at the Tangalle beaches, so swimming in the sea is not advised, although paddling is fine.


Mawella is a recent addition to our portfolio because we've discovered some some beautiful boutique properties there. The beach here is more sheltered, meaning the waters are calmer, swimmable, and ideal for stand-up paddle boarding or kayaking. You also have Mawella lagoon nearby if you fancy a boat trip, and the area is popular with fishing boats so if you're into photography you could capture some fantastic snaps.

East of Kandy, the vistas are dominated by the Knuckles Mountain Range, named by the British military to its five peaks' alleged resemblance to the knuckles of a clenched fist. The hills here are some of the wildest and least spoilt in Sri Lanka, with huge, largely unexplored, trekking and wildlife-spotting opportunities, and are surrounded be numerous tea estates. It’s a striking region to explore on foot, with an incredible biodiversity and range of vegetation. This is ideal for trekkers as the terrain ranges from riverine to montane forests, from savannah grasslands to semi evergreen woodlands.


The southern edge of the Knuckles Mountain Range leads to the Mahaweli River (the largest in the country) and the Victoria Reservoir with its huge dam, which is now the source of a significant amount of Sri Lanka's electricity. Here there are views across the land once inhabited by Sri Lanka's aboriginal tribes, known as the Veddhas.

Sri Lanka's southwest trip is home to gorgeous beaches, colonial towns, traditional stilt fishermen, stunning sunsets and wildlife spotting opportunities. Our favourite spots are Habaraduwa, Koggala, Weligama and Mirissa, but there are also hidden gems in Ahangama and Thalpe.


Weligama is one of the most well-known towns on the southwest coast, thanks to its surf schools and diving centres, with a backpacker vibe and lots of cafés, and Mirissa has a buzzing harbour, Coconut Tree Hill photo spot, and is the place to stay for whale watching. Both towns have a great touristy vibe, but the beaches can get busy in peak season with surfers, and the sea here is quite choppy.


Habaraduwa is lesser-known, has beautiful swimmable beaches, fewer tourists, and is only a 20 mins tuk-tuk to Galle old town if you fancy exploring. Koggala is one of the best places to see the iconic stilt fishermen and is home to Koggala Lake and the south coast's turtle hatchery.

Famous for its surf, this remote beach and village in the far east of the country has bags of laid-back charm and a number of interesting sights nearby. Home to an eclectic mix of Tamils, Muslims, Sinhalese and expat Europeans, Arugam Bay is known for its world-class surf breaks, attracting surfers from around the globe to its waves. Many surfers believe it to have some of the best waves throughout the whole of Asia, quite the statement!!


Apart from surfing, Arugam Bay offers a variety of activities such as snorkelling, diving, and beach volleyball. The nearby lagoons and reefs provide excellent opportunities for exploring underwater, discovering the colourful marine life and coral reefs. Kumana National Park is nearby for safari, and we recommend a boat trip on the Pottuvil Lagoon for nature lovers.


More recently, it has become popular with non-surfers who are seeking its chilled-out, relaxed vibes. The town also has a vibrant nightlife, with many beachside bars and restaurants offering delicious seafood dishes and drinks. The locals are friendly and welcoming, and visitors can experience the local culture and traditions by attending the weekly market or participating in the annual Kudumbigala Monastery festival.


There are no big hotel developments or high-end properties in this area, but if you're prepared to forego the five-star comforts, there are some wonderfully quirky boutique options here and in Pottuvil town just up the road.

Wilpattu National Park is Sri Lanka’s largest national park, occupying a vast area of land to the west of Anuradhapura. It was closed for many years due to its close location to the front-line during the civil conflict, however in 2009 the glorious 1085 sq. km park was reopened. As you can appreciate conservation wasn’t high on the priority list and therefore the density of wildlife is still poor in comparison with the likes of Yala and Uda Walawe. However, due to its size and low visitor numbers it’s far more peaceful than other national parks in Sri Lanka, and there’s still a good range of flora and fauna to be enjoyed, including the elusive leopard, sloth bear, sambar deer, exotic birdlife and elephant.

Yala National Park is the second biggest national park in Sri Lanka and arguably its most rewarding. With a varied ecosystem made up of moist and dry monsoon forests, grasslands, sandy beaches as well as fresh water and marine wetlands, Yala can’t help but produce incredible wildlife sightings. It’s an expansive area dappled with trees and brackish lakes, attracting the most remarkable bird life, insects and mammals. Mostly famed for leopard, Yala is said to be home to one of the highest concentrations of these illusive cats in the world. They generally can be seen year round, but to increase your chances visit at the end of dry season when the vegetation has died down.


It’s important to note that Yala National Park covers an area of 1260 sq.km, however four-fifths is strictly closed off to visitors. This means that, at times, Yala can feel quite busy. Yala sits in Sri Lanka’s south eastern corner and is just a four-hour drive from Galle.

Around 600 elephants make their home in Uda Walawe National Park, a wonderful lowland area covered in grassland and low lying shrub. It has a resplendent reservoir at its centre and lies within Sri Lanka’s dry zone; it feels more like an African savannah than a Sri Lankan jungle. With the hill country as its backdrop we feel it’s as much beautiful as it is thrilling. Arguably it doesn’t have the flora and fauna diversity that Yala, Wilpatty and Bundala boast, but due to the dry climate wildlife is easily spotted, and in particular elephant. It is also attracts fewer visitors than the more well known Yala. Hundreds of buffalo, macaque, crocodile and langur monkeys, as well as a plethora of bird species, also find their home within the park. This includes the Lesser Adjutana, which stands over a meter tall.


About 5km west of the park entrance is the Elephant Transit Home, an orphanage that is home to over 20 baby elephants. It’s well worth a visit if you have time. Generally we suggest just one night in Uda Walawe, this allows time for one afternoon and one morning jeep safari as well as a quick stop at the Elephant Transit Home. Uda Walawe sits directly south of the hill country making a great stop between the tea plantations and the south coast. We highly recommend it.

Trincomalee is eastern Sri Lanka’s principle town and the region surrounding it is opening up to be one of the islands most attractive and popular beach destinations, with picturesque bays and rocky peninsulas. Historically Trincomalee was been built on its formidable and impressive harbour, considered to be one of the best deep-water harbours in the world, so the town itself is worth a visit if you have time. It can’t be ignored that Trincomalee suffered deeply through Sri Lanka’s civil conflict and therefore it’s delightful to see this glorious coastal area looking to the future. However, due to this area sitting in isolation for so many years the range of hotels and restaurants is still fairly limited, so don’t expect too much glitz.


If you are planning to visit Sri Lanka during school summer holidays then Trincomalee and Sri Lanka’s east coast beaches are perfect as during this period the weather should be dry and sunny in comparison with the south and west coast, which may be a bit rainy.


Trincomalee is approximately a three hour drive from Anuradhapura and Jaffna, and around a five hour drive from Kandy.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve in southwest Sri Lanka is the island’s last remaining area of primary tropical rainforest, and as a result the area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988. Often overlooked in classic tours, Sinharaja is an incredible narrow strip of undulating and undisturbed land that is home to over 50% of Sri Lanka’s endemic species. Its steamy and thick atmosphere is a treasure-trove of soaring trees alive with unusual insects, amphibians, reptiles and rare birds; including the luminous blue magpie. If you are very lucky you may get to witness one of the world’s finest examples of a “mixed feeding species flock’’, otherwise known as a bird wave, where hundreds of different species of bird can be seen flying and foraging together.


The reserve is also home to some beautiful mammals such as the purple-faced langur monkey, the dusky-striped jungle squirrel, as well as leopard, rusty spotted cat, fishing cat and civit (although cats are rarely spotted).


The area is definitely best explored with a professional guide. During the rainier months this area is not for the faint hearted as accommodation is simple and the forest can become laden with leeches.


Sinharaja is a wildlife enthusiast’s haven and is approximately a four-hour drive from Colombo or from Galle.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress


The remains of Sigiriya ancient city sit atop a huge flat-topped rock that soars 180m high, dominating the jungle on every side. On closer inspection what you’ll also find pleasure gardens, huge lion's feet cut out of stone on one side, as well as staircases leading to the remains of a palace. It’s not only a unique archaeological site but also an incredible geological formation that offers outstanding views of the scenery below.


Dambulla Cave Temples


This site has acted as a sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries and is undoubtedly Sri Lanka’s best preserved and largest cave temple, with a total of five sanctuaries. It is an outstanding example of Sri Lanka’s religious art, with incredible Buddhist mural paintings and more than 150 Buddhist statues.


Polonnaruwa Ancient City Ruins


The second ancient capital city of Sri Lanka (after Anuradhapura), Polonnaruwa is a wonderful treasure trove of ancient Buddhist monuments, from ruins of royal palaces to colossal rock-cut Buddha statues.


Minneriya National Park


Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks both have extensive water tanks where large groups of wild elephant congregate, making for a great safari experience.

The sacred city of Anuradhapura is said to be Sri Lanka's first Buddhist capital, established around a cutting from the 'tree of enlightenment', the Buddha's fig tree. It was an important political and religious capital that flourished for 1300 years, however in 993 it was abandoned after being invaded. The ruins of the capital were hidden amidst dense jungle for many years, but today it's a protected UNESCO World Heritage site, a fascinating area to explore and a wonderful introduction to Sri Lanka's ancient Sinhalese civilization. Of all the palaces, monuments and monasteries at Anuradhapura, the colossal dagobas that scatter the landscape seem the most impressive. These are unique to Sri Lanka due to their circular foundations surrounded by a ring of monolithic columns. Anuradhapura combines brilliantly with Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya in the 'Cultural Triangle' and is under a five-hour drive from Colombo. It can also be visited en route to Jaffna or Sri Lanka's idyllic and unspoiled east coast.

Passikudah is a coastal town on Sri Lanka's idyllic east coast; the region is said to have one of the longest stretches of shallow coastline in the world making the ocean both beautiful and generally safe to swim in. It was once a very popular tourist destination, however visitor numbers diminished during the civil war and because of the 2004 Tsunami. The good news is that the area has very recently opened back up to tourism so it's quiet, secluded and ideal for some rest and relaxation during a tour of Sri Lanka. We love it.

Established in 1954, Gal Oya National Park is one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful and untouched protected areas. It lies in the southeast of the island, approximately three hours east from Kandy, two hours from Passikudah and three hours north of Yala. Due to its location it's remained almost entirely undeveloped. The park encompasses the country's largest inland body of water, the Senanayake Samudraya Lake. It's here where boat safaris can be enjoyed, with the chance of seeing wild elephant and numerous birds. Sometimes it's possible to see wild elephants swimming to the lake's small islands, an unforgettable experience.


 


 


As well as boat safaris, it’s also possible to enjoy jeep safaris and walking safari. It's also one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see the Veddas, the indigenous people of Sri Lanka. We feel Gal Oya is ideally suited to those looking to get off-the-beaten-track. It's a true wilderness experience and best visited during May to September, although it is a year-round destination.

Ella and Haputale lie in the southern part of the hill country, to the east of Horton Plains. They are busy and bustling little market towns and the area has been popular with local and international visitors for many years due to it being one of the original tea growing regions. The towns themselves aren't anything to write home about but the surrounding area is magnificent, with an idyllic temperature to boot. Nearby you’ll find Ella Gap and Ravana Ella Falls, as well as Dowa Rock Temple, a 4m high Buddha carved into the temple.

Hatton and the countryside surrounding it lies to the west of Nuwara Eliya, in Sri Lanka’s glorious hill country. It’s an area of outstanding beauty; undulating hills draped in verdant tea estates are dotted with lakes, pine forests, twee churches, peeling colonial bungalows and ancient tea factories. The town itself is nothing to write home about, but it does lie close to Adam’s Peak; a conical mountain and focal point for pilgrims.


 


 


Little has changed in this area since the British started growing tea in the late 1800’s; tea is still the major employer in the area so it's common to see women out picking during the day. It’s worth staying in Hatton's countryside to appreciate the luscious views and clean air.


 


 


Ceylon Tea Trails run four wonderful bungalows here, which are scattered in the tea plantations surrounding Hatton. These are some of the most opulent converted tea bungalows in Sri Lanka, and they offer the chance to stay in glorious colonial style comfort in the hill country. There are other incredible options though if you don't quite have that budget, and they all have walking trails from them and incredible locations.


 


 


Hatton can be accessed directly from Colombo, which takes around four hours by car, but we recommend taking the scenic train to or from Kandy. This journey offers the most incredible views and is a charming experience.

At the heart of Sri Lanka lies Kandy, the last capital of the Sinhala kings, and Sri Lanka’s cultural centre. It was Sri Lanka’s capital until the British took control in 1815 and due to its significant association with Buddhism; UNESCO has now made the Sacred City of Kandy a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kandy is a fascinating place and most commonly known for its exquisite gem stones, the exuberant Esala Perahera festival, but also the Tempe of The Tooth (the sacred tooth of the Buddha); arguably Sri Lanka’s most famous and important shrine. This sits alongside the Royal Palace and both can be visited together.


 


 


Near to the now sprawling city you will also find The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya. Celebrated for its vast selection of orchids, The Royal Botanical Gardens offer some of the most impressive horticultural displays found in the subcontinent, and we highly recommend visiting. Bordered by the luminous hill country, Kandy is not only a cultural and religious attraction, but also a base in which to explore the striking outdoors. From the city it is also possible to visit both Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage (although we feel it’s slightly touristy these day) as well as the Millennium Elephant Foundation. It’s also possible to enjoy treks in the nearby Knuckles Mountain Range, a glorious region also protected by UNESCO.


 


 


Kandy is easily accessible as it’s less than a four-hour drive from Colombo. From Kandy it’s also possible to head south on the train to Nuwara Eliya or Hatton, one of the most scenic and interesting journeys on the entire island.

The north feels a world away from the rest of Sri Lanka, and at its heart is Jaffna. Geographically closer to Southern India than Colombo, the region has developed its own unique identity; mainly due to the Tamil migrants that have settled here over many centuries, along with the Dutch and British that have shaped a lot of the architecture. It can’t be ignored that between 1983 and 2009 this region was the centre of a long and bloody war between the majority Singhalese and Tamil minority, further reinforcing the two thousand year difference that separates the Tamil north from the Singhalese south. The area is now safe and open to tourism and reaching the region is now fairly straightforward (a four hour drive from Anuradhapura). It offers visitors an insight to a region emerging from isolation; it’s also friendly, not at all touristy, and is appreciated not just for its sights, but also for its unusual and unique personality.


 


 


The Jaffna peninsular and surrounding islands also offer remote beaches and hidden temples that are seldom explored by tourists. Visiting Jaffna and the region surrounding it is ideal for more discerning travellers who are seeking a broad understanding of Sri Lanka’s turbulent past.

Situated about two-thirds down along the west coast lies Colombo: Sri Lanka’s capital and the entry point for most visiting the island. It’s by far the busiest, biggest and most modern city in an island that is very rural. Often low down the list of priorities for visiting tourists, Colombo actually offers a plethora of things to do and see. These range from the Fort area, Galle Face Green, Cinnamon Gardens, and Pettah Market along with a range of Hindu and Buddhist temples. If time isn’t an issue a one or two night stop here offers a fantastic insight into modern Sri Lanka as well as its colonial heritage. There’s a stunning selection of boutiques with glorious jewellery, artwork and fabric on offer along with a good selection of fine dining restaurants to choose from.

Established by the British in the 19th century, Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka’s highest town and often referred to as the island’s ‘Little England’. It was a favourite retreat of the British who were attracted to its cool clean air and glorious emerald tea plantations that carpet the scenery. The views have remained fairly untouched since the 1800’s, with a glorious landscape still peppered with tea planters’ bungalows and colourfully adorned ladies picking tea by hand. The views are can be enjoyed as you glide through the winding roads elevated in a car, or when travelling by train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya. It’s easily one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful areas.


The town itself has retained some of its colonial charm, with a golf course and a gentleman’s club and is great to explore on foot or via tuk tuk. Victoria Park and Lake Gregory are worth a visit, as well as experiencing afternoon 'High Tea' Sri Lankan style on the manicured lawn of the Grand Hotel.


For walkers Nuwara Eliya acts as a fantastic base for Horton Plains National Park, which falls under the UNESCO protected ‘Central Highlands of Sri Lanka’. Its undulating plains are rich in bio-diversity and covered in grassland and cloud forest. Walks here often reach 8km and on clear days the views are outstanding. The area also offers the opportunity of learning how tea is made in one of the region’s traditional tea factories.

One and a half hours south of Colombo lie Bentota, Balapitiya and Kosgoda - relatively quiet beach destinations offering a mixture of larger resorts, fine boutique hotels and villas. These are situated at discreet intervals from one another and some are the creation of revered architect, Geoffrey Bawa. The beaches on the west coast are golden and the sea is calmer than the south coast, making it a great option for families and couples alike. It’s worth noting that a railway line backs some of the hotels in Bentota, but we feel this doesn’t cause too much disruption, as the trains are fairly infrequent. Many people feel this actually adds to the colonial ambience and they enjoy waving to the passers by.


 


 


There's plenty to do on the west coast of Sri Lanka: visit a nearby turtle hatchery, the Tsunami Community Museum and memorials, try your hand at some water sports, check out Bevis Bawa's Brief Gardens (designed by Geoffrey's brother), or the Madu Ganga River safari is a must-do for nature lovers! This area is also well known for the ancient tradition of mask making. Finished masks are used to decorate homes, in dance performances and festivals. Alternatively, you can simply relax by the pool, wander along the long sandy beach, or explore the local towns.

Located only 20 minutes drive from Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo Airport), Negombo is a perfect stop before or after an international flight. It is a fishing town with decent beaches, a pretty lagoon, canals, and Dutch architecture. There’s a clutch of good value restaurants serving freshly caught seafood, as well as small boutiques that trace the same line as the larger hotels. In Negombo town you’ll find an effervescent fish market, which is worth exploring if you have time, along with a selection of colourfully adorned fishing boats that make fantastic photographs.


Inland, there are a couple of beautiful boutique properties near Gampaha: The Pineapple Villa and The Wallawwa, both offering serene luxury at different levels with gorgeous tropical garden surroundings.


For something more traditional, Horathapola Estate in Wadumunnegedara ticks the boxes - Set within a large working coconut plantation, Horathapola is a plantation bungalow converted into a guesthouse, complete with antique furniture, old photos and white washed walls.


Further up the coast you'll hit Chilaw and Waikkal, both great options for those looking to completely switch off during their beach stay. The Anantaya Resort & Spa Chilaw is a great 4* hotel next to Chilaw Lagoon with a beautiful pool area, whereas the 5* Wattura Resort and Spa Waikkal is a brand new luxury boutique wellness resort, consisting of villas and suites with private butler service and a 1.5km private beach and luxury spa.

About Sri Lanka

For many years travellers have passed by Sri Lanka on their way to India or Southeast Asia. Years of war have kept Sri Lanka off many itineraries, but now the war has ended this impossibly green, spectacular and affordable teardrop shaped destination has opened its doors. Lapped by the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is home to endless beaches, year round sunshine and eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It’s a haven for wildlife; it has the highest density of wild elephant in Asia and several of its national parks are home to leopard. The misty heights of the hill country invite trekkers and cyclists, while others enjoy its verdurous tea plantations from the comfort of a train. There’s ancient cities, timeless ruins, colonial forts, rich lowland jungles, primary rainforest, dazzling white beaches and even blue whales. No other country packs so much into such a small place, so for those who don’t like long journeys, Sri Lanka’s for you. What’s more the smiling faces that welcome you here are genuine, Sri Lankans are some of the nicest people you’ll meet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sri Lanka is a year round destination, but despite its small size there are regional differences with the weather. Therefore it’s important to know where to go and when. There are two very important monsoon seasons in Sri Lanka that dictates this.

The southwest ‘Yala’ monsoon

This brings rain to the west and southwest coasts, as well as the hill country from April/May to September. Generally the wetter months are April-June. During this period the northern part of the island, particularly around the ‘Cultural Triangle’ will be very dry and hot.

The northeast ‘Maha’ monsoon

This is less severe and hits the east coast from November to December. There’s also an inter-monsoonal period between October and November that can result in rainstorms across the island.

Put simply, the best time to visit the west, southern coasts and hill country is from December to March, while the best weather on the east coast is between April/May to September. March is a fantastic time to explore the whole island. Due to Sri Lanka’s proximity to the equator, the temperatures remain pretty steady year round. This generally varies between 26-30 degrees Celsius during the day. This cools considerably in the hill country so expect 18-22 degrees in places like Kandy.

 

Eating in Sri Lanka is wonderfully varied; the staple diet of Sri Lanka is rice and curry, but whilst travelling, you’ll be tempted with food found in many of the old colonies as well. Sri Lankan curries are usually fairly hot; they often feature chicken or vegetables, but mainly fish, and are very coconut-based, heavily influenced by Kerala in southern India. And you won’t go hungry! It’s not uncommon for tables to be filled with countless different curries and accompaniments. You’ll find string hoppers on many menus; these are made from hot water dough made from rice or wheat that are then pressed out into little wicker mats. These are the perfect accompaniment for the traditional curry. If you’re staying in fairly upmarket boutique hotels, dining is a real treat, and you’ll be able to choose from traditional food and more Mediterranean-inspired dishes. We generally find that most people eat inside their hotels, as they are mostly quite remote. Howeve,r you will find a selection of good restaurants in Colombo and Galle.

Sri Lankan Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad Airways all fly to Sri Lanka, although Sri Lankan Airlines is the only direct option from London, with the others transiting via the Middle East. The flights to Sri Lanka are all overnight, allowing you to sleep on the way, maximising your time on the ground.

We hold no allegiance to any particular carrier and have access to hundreds of different fares. Flights are always quoted on a case-by-case basis, allowing us to search for the best possible deal for you. Please let us know if you have a preferred option, or if you would like us to look at upgrading your flights to Business Class.

Airport taxes should always be included in the cost of your ticket, we will inform you if there are any changes.

A visa is required for UK passport holders travelling to Sri Lanka, which can be obtained for $50 USD per person online on http://www.eta.gov.lk/slvisa – note that this is the official website; do not use any other website.

It’s very important that you have at least one blank page in your passport and at least 6 months validity from your return.

As we’re not medical experts we feel it is essential that you contact your GP well in advance of travelling. It is possible that you may need vaccinations, as vaccinations against a range of diseases are required for much of South Asia. Anti-malarial medication is sometimes a necessity, depending on your itinerary.

A really useful source of extra info is The Travel Doctor, an interactive website providing specialist health information for travellers, plus customised lists of travel medicines, vaccines and malaria tablets.

We advise that you don’t drink tap water in Sri Lanka. Bottled water can be found throughout Sri Lanka at a very affordable price, and safe filtered water is often available in restaurants and hotels. Please be aware of the environmental implications of drinking bottled water and attempt to refill them with filtered water where possible.

Like in all developing countries, it’s worth being diligent and exercising a common-sense approach when travelling through the country. If you have any safety or security concerns, we recommend that you read the FCO Travel Advice.

Swimming

Swimming in the ocean around Sri Lanka is a wonderful pleasure, however in some areas the coastline is rocky and the sea can become rough due to strong currents. Remain cautious and if in doubt only swim if there’s a lifeguard nearby.

We only use experienced drivers that are professionally certified, who can moderate their driving to meet with our expectations. Remember, you are in charge. If you feel your driver is driving too quickly or is behaving in any way that makes you feel uncomfortable you must say something to your guide immediately. If the driving does not instantly improve, we will secure a different driver for you. Self-driving is not an option in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan currency is the Rupee (Rs). It is technically a ‘closed currency’ so you'll need to get this on arrival in Sri Lanka. Your chauffeur guide will assist you with this. There are plenty of ATMs throughout Sri Lanka, but mainly in the larger towns.

Tipping is a standard practice in Sri Lanka, but only as a reward for good service. We recommend approximately Rs1500-2000 per day / per couple for the chauffeur guide, Rs500 for a driver in the national parks, Rs200 for a tracker in the national parks and Rs50-100 per bag for hotel porters.

  • A number of the countries in which we operate holidays are religious societies with a widely observed set of customs. Always respect these norms, particularly when visiting religious buildings.

  • To the best of our knowledge, all hotels, lodges, and camps within our portfolio operate stringent measures to minimise water usage. All of our destinations have issues with water supplies to a certain extent, so feel free to raise any possible wastage should you encounter it during your stay, either with the accommodation or with us upon your return.

  • Please ask permission before taking photographs of people, and respect their wishes if they are not happy to be photographed. We find that friendly requests and a smile are usually met with a ‘yes!’

  • Strive, where possible, to make your own contribution to environmental practices as you travel. This might include minimising your electricity usage, not smoking in protected areas, avoiding coral while snorkelling, and safely disposing of all litter (recycling where possible).

  • Where possible, try to purchase from local suppliers. This includes shopping for souvenirs, dining out at restaurants, and booking additional excursions during your free time. In areas where haggling is an accepted part of daily life, don’t be offended if you’re unable to obtain what you perceive as a fair price for an item.

  • We emphasise to local suppliers that our clients should never be taken on unsolicited shopping trips, but if this does happen, try to retain your sense of humour, provide a firm refusal to participate and do let us know about it on your return. We pass on all feedback from every trip undertaken with us to our relevant local suppliers, who all share our commitment to travelling with sensitivity.

  • Please don’t remove any indigenous items from their natural habitat and attempt to bring them home as a souvenir. This particularly applies to everything from coral, shells, plants and food in the natural world, to cultural artefacts and antiques.
