Your tailor-made holiday will be as unique as you are. These itineraries are just a starting point, a bit of inspiration to show what’s possible. Your own trip all starts with a conversation with one of our Sri Lanka experts, who’ll take the time to understand what matters most to you and design the perfect holiday to match.
This is Sri Lanka made easy for families, with just the right mix of adventure, wildlife, culture and downtime. We’ve kept the pace relaxed, limited the long drives, and picked just three main bases so you can really settle in and enjoy each part of the journey without constantly packing and unpacking.
You’ll explore ancient cities and cave temples, cycle through ruins, climb iconic rock fortresses and keep an eye out for wild elephants on safari. Then there’s beach time in Trincomalee, with warm waters, coral reefs and the chance to spot whales and dolphins just offshore. Whether you’re diving in at Pigeon Island, tasting your way through a home-cooked curry, or simply relaxing with your feet in the sand, there’s something for every age here. The cooler hills offer a great change of pace, with kayaking, hiking and paddleboarding available if you’re feeling energetic – or you can slow things down with a lazy afternoon by the pool or a cooking session in the countryside. You’ll also take the famous train ride through tea country, a real highlight that winds its way through misty plantations and hillside villages.
This itinerary was designed with families in mind, but if you’re a couple after a slower, more scenic take on Sri Lanka, it’s a fantastic fit too. Relaxed, varied and full of brilliant experiences, that’s what this holiday is all about.

Hop on board your overnight flight to Sri Lanka this evening. Pop on a film or two and toast the adventure to come, your Sri Lanka family holiday starts here.
After touching down in Colombo, your private chauffeur-guide will be ready and waiting with a smile to whisk you straight off inland to Sigiriya, the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle. The three-hour drive takes you through lush countryside, small villages, and rice paddies, offering a first glimpse of Sri Lanka’s tropical landscapes. Take a bit of time to settle into your hotel and unwind by the pool, ready for the adventures ahead.
This morning, you’ll explore Polonnaruwa’s ancient ruins by bicycle, a fun and active way to discover the city’s temples, palaces, and Buddha statues. After lunch, you’ll hop in a jeep and head off into Minneriya National Park to spot the herds of wild elephants, deer, and exotic birdlife that call the park home. If you’re visiting between July and September, you might be lucky enough to witness ‘The Elephant Gathering’, one of the largest Asian elephant congregations in the world – a real family memory in the making.
An early morning alarm call starts your day today as you'll head off for an early morning climb up Sigiriya Rock Fortress, one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic UNESCO sites. We really recommend tackling the climb first thing – the heat is less challenging and there are fewer people to share the magic with. The hike is steep but rewarding and more than doable for the whole family. At the top, you’ll find yourselves at the ruins of an ancient palace with panoramic views over the jungle. Later, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, home to stunning murals and more than 150 colourful Buddha statues, before heading back to your hotel for an afternoon of relaxation and family fun by the pool.
Before leaving the Cultural Triangle, you’ll be stopping off at a small local village, where a wonderful Sri Lankan family will welcome you into their home for a delicious home-cooked curry and rice lunch. This is a genuine opportunity to connect, learn from, and interact with the local people – one of the best ways to bring the culture to life for adults and kids alike. Next up, you’ll hop back in the car and continue on a two-hour drive to Trincomalee, a laid-back beach town with soft sands and warm, turquoise waters. Check into your beachside hotel and spend the afternoon unwinding by the sea.
Today is yours to do as little or as much as you like. Walk along the golden sands, play in the surf, watch the local fishermen bring in their daily catch, or simply relax under a palm tree with a fresh coconut in hand.
This morning, we highly recommend setting off on a dolphin and whale-watching boat trip. The waters around Trincomalee are home to spinner, Fraser’s, striped and bottlenose dolphins, and even sperm whales if you time it right. The afternoon is yours to spend however you like, relaxing at the hotel or exploring Trincomalee’s colonial streets and temples.
Spend the day at leisure today, or hire bicycles to explore the town at your own pace. Visit Fort Frederick, a 17th-century fortress with a fascinating colonial past, or take a short hike up to Koneswaram Temple, which offers breathtaking views over the coast.
Today is at leisure. If you're after more adventures, we'd recommend taking a short boat ride to Pigeon Island Marine National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s very best snorkelling spots. Swim among vibrant coral reefs, colourful tropical fish, and even harmless reef sharks – it’s a fantastic adventure for families.
It’s time to leave the beach behind today as you'll be driven four hours inland to the Knuckles Mountains or Digana – a tranquil and scenic retreat nestled away in the hills. The accommodation is all really unique here, and will be set against a dramatic backdrop of rolling hills, misty forests, and tea-covered slopes – the perfect spot to take a breath and reconnect with nature.
Spend the day hiking through the Knuckles Mountains, soaking up the views, waterfalls, and jungle trails. There are many different walks to choose from here all catering to different ages and skill levels, chat to us about which one might be best suited to your family. Alternatively, take a picnic down to the Victoria Reservoir, or indulge in a spot of yoga in the fresh mountain air.
Next up, you’ll head into Kandy, Sri Lanka’s cultural capital, for a day-trip packed with sightseeing. You'll visit the Temple of the Tooth, Kandy Lake, and the Royal Botanical Gardens. There’s so much history and culture to soak up here, as well as plenty of delicious street food to treat your tastebuds to.
Today, an unforgettable journey awaits. Hop aboard the famous Kandy-to-Hatton train, often called one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. As the train winds through misty hills, tea plantations, and mountain villages, spot tea pickers at work and wave to friendly locals along the way. You’ll stop for a delicious local lunch in Hatton, before being driven on to Colombo for your final night.
After breakfast, your driver will take you to the airport in time for your return flight home. You’ll leave with shared family memories of ancient cities, incredible wildlife, and beachside adventures, ready to start planning your next family escape.

“
Lisa Jankus-Scott organised a very diverse itinerary for our visit to Sri Lanka. We visited temples, tea plantations, a couple of safaris, a street food experience, Sri Lanka food cookery class and many beautiful rural boutique hotels. Our driver guide Alaine looked after us so well and was very informative, he loved the fact that my husband shared his interest in birds. Will definitely use Holiday Architects again.

Rebecca at Holiday Architects put together a wonderful trip to Sri Lanka for us. She listened carefully to everything we did and didn’t want and asked all the right questions. This resulted in a perfect itinerary right from the beginning. The holiday itself was as good as promised; an excellent driver-guide, wonderful hotels and an itinerary that delivered everything we wanted.

This was our second winter sojourn organised by Holiday Architects. Last year Malaysia, this year Sri Lanka, with the patient and knowledgeable Rebecca. I seriously doubt whether holidays could be better organised than these two trips. Everything worked like clockwork with diverse boutique accommodation and amazing tours of Sri Lanka’s highlights.

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday in Sri Lanka. I initially reached out to several companies for support with planning our trip and was immediately impressed by the quick and friendly response from Lisa Jankus-Scott. In the 10 days we were there, Lisa managed to provide a very exciting itinerary that met all our interests and allowed for some relaxation at the end. Good communication from Lisa from start to finish was very reassuring. This experience has given us confidence to explore further and I would not hesitate to return to Holiday Architects in the future and I will certainly be recommending them to family and friends. Thank you for our wonderful holiday experience in Sri Lanka.

Just back from an amazing holiday in Sri Lanka. Rebecca sorted out a fantastic itinerary. Lovely boutique hotels, largely in rural settings, made for a beautiful, peaceful stay. Overall, I don't think the holiday could have been better. This was our third holiday booked through Holiday Architects and we won't hesitate to use them again.

It was our first visit to Sri Lanka. For us it was a case of venturing into the 'unknown', so we were grateful to have the wonderful support of Rebecca who advised and organised such an incredible trip. Her knowledge of the country is 'second to none', and it is obviously a country she knows and loves so well, so we were fortunate to be able to share some of her experiences. Sri Lanka is such a beautiful and diverse country, with extremely warm and friendly people. The small boutique hotels, the beach resorts, the train trip through the tea plantations , the historic visit to Galle, the street food tour of Kandy and the choice of restaurants were all exceptional. Such a memorable trip and we would certainly recommend Holiday Architects.

A trip to treasure. This is the second time we have used Holiday Architects and we were certainly not disappointed. Our last trip was to Costa Rica and this holiday, Sri Lanka. Rebecca Dodds was so informative about the country and took into account our family preferences. The accommodation was truly amazing, and the itinerary was action-packed as we requested. We had the most wonderful time and have recommended to all our friends.
