Riad Star is a riad with a slightly unusual history. As seems to be mandatory for any self-respecting riad, it was owned by a notable individual, in this case Thami El Glaoui, one of the most famous Pashas of Marrakesh. However, his use for it was unique, as he installed Josephine Baker, a singer, dancer and actress famous as the fist black woman in a major movie, in the riad; rumours suggest as his mistress. Restored by English owners, the design of the riad is typical, based around the central courtyard, but the décor, in keeping with the era of Josephine Baker, takes much inspiration from art nouveau, but infused with a Moroccan twist. This unusual combination, the location near the Jemaa El Fna and in the heart of the souqs, plus the sensible pricing, make Riad Star an alluring proposition.
