Your tailor-made holiday will be as unique as you are. These itineraries are just a starting point, a bit of inspiration to show what’s possible. Your own trip all starts with a conversation with one of our South Africa experts, who’ll take the time to understand what matters most to you and design the perfect holiday to match.
This South Africa holiday is designed to perfectly combine the history, culture and scenery of South Africa, with the relaxation and luxury of an extended beach break in the sun. Starting your trip in Cape Town, an integral part of any first-time visit to South Africa, before heading just an hour outside of the city, to the Winelands with their historic vineyards to visit and award-winning wines to taste. Of course, we've included some time on a classic Big Five safari, where you'll spend a few days heading out into the bush to see what close encounters might be in store with Africa’s big and little game. Finally, you'll fly from the bush to the beach with some time on the white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters of Mauritius. If you're after something even more luxurious and secluded, we'd recommend the beaches of Mozambique for that extra slice of something special.
Although Mauritius and Mozambique both make for idyllic island beach breaks, if you're looking to keep your holiday within South Africa, there's always the Elephant Coast in the KwaZulu-Natal region, which boasts the best beaches and coastline in South Africa.
Here's a summary of what you might get up to day-to-day on this South Africa holiday. As always, this is just an idea. Every single day of your trip will be tailored to suit you.
Tonight, you'll board your overnight flight to Cape Town, where a journey of diverse landscapes, fascinating history, wildlife encounters, and luxury beach escapes await.
You’ll touch down in Cape Town this morning, where you’ll be met by one of our trusted and friendly team on the ground. They’ll whisk you off to your accommodation in the city for the next three nights. Whether you’re staying in a grand city hotel, a stylish boutique B&B, or a peaceful guesthouse, we’ll make sure it’s the perfect fit for you. Take the rest of the day to settle in, perhaps enjoy a sundowner overlooking the ocean or take a leisurely walk along the V&A Waterfront. Tomorrow, your adventure truly begins.
Today is all about Cape Town’s most famous landmarks. Start with a ferry ride over the shark-infested waters to Robben Island. Here you’ll walk in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela, exploring the prison with a former inmate as your guide. Back on the mainland, take the cable car (or hike, if you’re feeling energetic) to the top of Table Mountain, where panoramic views stretch as far as the eye can see. As the sun sets, it’s time to sample one of Cape Town’s excellent restaurants. The city’s food scene is truly world-class, and, as huge foodies here at HA, we’ve got plenty of recommendations to share.
To truly understand South Africa’s culture and character, today is dedicated to its history. Start at the District Six Museum to learn more about the communities forcibly removed during apartheid. Next up, visit the Castle of Good Hope, South Africa’s oldest colonial building, with its fascinating military and colonial history exhibits. If you have time, a visit to the Bo-Kaap neighbourhood is hugely worthwhile. Offering a more colourful and uplifting perspective, its brightly painted houses and Cape Malay culture make it a great place for a walking tour (or a delicious curry!).
You’ll leave the city behind and head to the Winelands today, a region of rolling vineyards and mountain views. Choose from elegant wine estate stays, stylish boutique hotels, or charming guesthouses in the quaint towns of Franschhoek or Stellenbosch. Spend your days indulging in wine tastings, enjoying long, lazy lunches, and soaking up the scenery. For a fun and effortless way to explore, hop on the Franschhoek Wine Tram, which takes you to multiple wineries without the need for a designated driver. If wine isn’t your thing, there are plenty of art galleries, markets, and cycling trails to keep you entertained.
This morning, you’ll fly from Cape Town to your safari destination – whether that’s the Eastern Cape, Kruger, Limpopo, or Madikwe, we’ll make sure the journey is seamless. Once you land, you’ll be transferred to your lodge, and warmly welcomed by the sounds and wide open vastness of the African bush. After settling in, you’ll head out on your first game drive, keeping your eyes peeled for elephants, giraffes, or even a pride of lions. Back at the lodge this evening, enjoy a delicious dinner and a drink by the fire as the stars come out.
Safari mornings start early, with a pre-dawn game drive. The early alarm call will be well worthwhile, though, as this is the best time to spot predators on the move. Your expert guide will track the wildlife, giving you the best chance to spot everything from rhinos and leopards to smaller creatures like chameleons and colourful birds. Spend the afternoons relaxing at your lodge or heading off on guided bush walks, learning all about the ecosystem and magic of the bush up close. Evenings are so magical here, you’ll feel a million miles away from your usual day-to-day.
After one final morning game drive, it’s time to head back to the airport for a flight to Johannesburg, where you’ll stay overnight. Depending on your arrival time, you might have a chance to explore Soweto, visit the Apartheid Museum, or simply enjoy a relaxed evening before your next flight.
Swap safari plains for soft white sand today as you fly to Mauritius, your home for the next four nights. When you touch down, a private transfer will take you to your chosen resort, where relaxation takes centre stage.
The next few days are yours to spend however you please. If serious R&R is the goal, enjoy your resort, where infinity pools, beachfront loungers, and world-class spas make it all too easy to switch off. But, if you prefer to stay active, Mauritius has plenty on offer. You could take a boat trip to Île aux Cerfs to snorkel in the hidden coves over coral reefs. Or, head inland to Black River Gorges National Park, with its lush trails, waterfalls and incredible island views. The island is also a haven for water sports, try your hand at paddleboarding, diving, or even deep-sea fishing while you’re here.
After one final relaxed morning in paradise, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your journey home, either via Johannesburg or directly back to the UK.
