Food tour

So much about a country and a culture is expressed through its cuisine. In South Africa, much of the cuisine is a home-style cooking and to get a taste you really need to search hard. A guided tour will explore the history of this country and city, walking through the back streets to find these local tastes. Walk the streets of Cape Town and experience its history, its people and its culinary delights. Stop to taste a mixture of traditional food, South African street food and to visit some artisanal foodie and coffee shops. During your walk you’ll have the opportunity to taste some of the following items: African Soul food: pap, samp & beans, vetkoek Falooda - a traditional Muslim Rose Milkshake; a gourmet bunny chow to get a little taste of Indian Cuisine and bobotie pies - a modern take on the traditional Bobotie dish which both the Cape Malay group and white Afrikaner group refer to as their traditional dish.

Day trip to The Winelands

Centred on the towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, in beautiful valleys between steep, craggy ridges, the Winelands is blessed with not just amazing scenery, but also the ideal climate for vines and their delicious end product. A day exploring the Winelands may well involve tasting the wines and learning about the production processes at three or four different estates: this way you get to see a range of ideas and settings, from the ultra-modern, boutique set-up somewhere like La Motte, to the traditional architecture and classic wines of Warwick; from the educational and commercially successful operation at Fairview, to the wonderful setting geared towards strolls amidst the vines and picnics under the trees at Boschendal. The beauty of nearly all the estates from the large, visitor-focussed places to the tiny garagistes, is that they’ll readily show you around and talk you through their wines, even if you drop in unannounced. As well as the wine and the scenery, the towns in this region offer cafes, art galleries, craft shops and museums; not to mention the amazing restaurants, as the Winelands quite rightly claims the crown of gourmet capital of South Africa. Altogether, you’ll return from your day in the Winelands wiser, more relaxed, slightly broader round the waist and carrying a couple of bottles of a magical vintage you’ve managed to unearth.

Historic Cape Town

First settled by Europeans in the 17th century, as a provisioning station for vessels travelling between Europe and the East Indies, there are monuments to all the stages of Cape Town’s history to visit. The original settlers were Dutch, and the Castle of Good Hope stands on the site of their original fortification for defending the nascent community. A star-fort, it was built on the coastline, but thanks to land reclamation it now lies in the heart of the city! The indigenous population were not very numerous and the early settlers were unable to subdue them or persuade them to work as labourers, so they imported slaves from the East Indies. These formed the roots of the Cape Malay community whose spiritual home is the Bo-Kaap quarter, with its distinctive houses, each painted a different vivid colour which originally identified the occupation of the owner. The Cape Malay are also Muslims, so you may hear the muezzin’s call as you tour the area. Other than Robben Island, the District Six museum is a good introduction into the history of apartheid. Originally a run-down area populated by the coloured community and a magnet for musicians, poets and artists, it was declared a white area by the apartheid government in 1965, and the buildings razed to the ground, their occupants relocated to the Cape Flats townships. Such was the international outcry at this, that the site was never developed, and today the ghostly outline of the streets and buildings can be seen in the grass that covers the area. The museum tells this story through photographs and the experiences and stories of those displaced residents: moving and educational tales.

Cape Town Golf

Thanks to Gary Player and Ernie Els, golf enjoys a strong following in South Africa, and there are some world-class courses thanks to this legacy. There are historic courses, like the Royal Cape Golf Club, and more modern courses, purpose-built and designed by famous designers, such as the Erinvale course, designed by Gary Player. One thing that all the Cape courses share is the weather: whilst there will be lots of sun, which is great, there is also quite a bit of wind, making the courses more challenging than they may initially seem! Cape Town brings the fascinating world of the big blue to you, in the enchanting world of the Two Oceans Aquarium. Home to more than 3000 creatures and 88 species, the aquatic entertainment and educational centre gives both adults and children alike the chance to come face-to-face with parts of the ecosystems found in both the Atlantic and Indian Ocean. Immerse yourself in the many stunning ocean exhibits and get closer with interactive exhibits that reveal the world of the very, very small. For something truly special, why not pull on a wet-suit for a unique opportunity to get close to shoals of large predators such as yellow-fin tuna or engage with the friendly rescue turtles Bob and Sandy in a secure environment, and get a privileged look (with mask and snorkel) at the beautiful short-tail stingrays. Just waiting for your eager minds are predators of the deep, fish as multi-coloured as a rainbow, crabs the size of toddlers, and feathered friends so lovable they don’t mind a soft pat on the head.
