Winelands Golf

Thanks to Gary Player and Ernie Els, golf enjoys a strong following in South Africa, and there are some world-class courses thanks to this legacy. There are historic courses, like the Royal Cape Golf Club, and more modern courses, purpose-built and designed by famous designers, such as the Erinvale course, designed by Gary Player. One thing that all the Cape region courses share is the weather: whilst there will be lots of sun, which is great, there is also quite a bit of wind, making the courses more challenging than they may initially seem! Let us make your tee time reservations for you, and advise you how to fit some golfing into your time in South Africa.

Dornier Estate

Dornier Estate can be found on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, on the lower slopes of the mountains that guard the town. After bumping up a dirt road towards the Cape Dutch farmstead that houses the restaurant, the last thing you expect to see is the dramatic and unashamedly modern curving rooftop of the winery, reflected in the still waters of a vast koi pond, built over the maturation cellar to help regulate the temperature in there. The wines made here are bold and modern, like the architecture, and it’s great to sit in the wonderful Bodega restaurant looking over the pond and that amazing roof, sipping some of the wine and taking it all in.

Franschhoek Pass Drive

Franschhoek is tucked up at the head of a valley, beneath seemingly impenetrable mountain walls; but one road does sneak up and through this barrier: the Franschhoek Pass. It’s a dramatic road, through scenery reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands, with a steep river canyon on one side. As you emerge from the mountains, you descend towards a huge reservoir, the road sweeping across it on a viaduct. You then travel through rolling farm lands, before hitting the main N2 highway. Turning back towards the Cape, you cross the Sir Lowry Pass and if the weather is good, you’ll be able to see Table Mountain as you descend towards the shore of False Bay. You then head north again towards Stellenbosch and Franschhoek to complete the loop.

Spier Day Out

Spier is a large and very commercial estate, but this should not deter you from visiting, as they have so many experiences on offer; it really is a great place to visit. Of course, they do tastings of their own wines, but it is probably the other activities that are more attractive. The estate is extensive, with lakes and a golf course, and there are all manner of trails and walks to take, as well as horse rides on offer. There are some great restaurants, and you can order picnics to eat out under a tree. The latest addition to the estate is the Segway Tours, where you can glide around the wine estate for an hour or two. They even have a sunset tour to see the Winelands at their best. There are souvenir and craft shops and stalls to browse and a golf course too. With all these activities, Spier is great for kids, but adults will get a lot of pleasure from a visit as well.
