Hotel overview

Tucked away down a peaceful lane on the outskirts of San Pedro de Atacama, the adobe Altiplanico San Pedro has been built to resemble a traditional desert village. Lines of casitas or small houses are adorned with straw roofs and the buildings are connected by winding pathways, interspersed with purple alfalfa gardens. Rooms are spacious and unique, and all are designed and decorated with local materials. The hotel faces the impressive Licancabur Volcano and there are plenty of spots throughout the hotel to pause to appreciate the views and take in the breath-taking Atacama sunsets. You can even take a dip in the inviting swimming pool after a long day spent exploring the driest desert in the world.

Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley)

Just a short drive from San Pedro de Atacama, the rugged, lunar-like landscapes of Moon Valley are one of the desert's true highlights. This dramatic area includes enormous, sweeping sand dunes, deep valleys and salt caves. Another distinctive feature are the many fascinating geological rock formations, which have been created through water and wind erosion as well as extreme desert temperatures. This excursion lasts for roughly three hours, including a 40-minute walk.

Petroglyphs & Rainbow Valley

Head west of San Pedro de Atacama towards the town of Calama until you reach Rainbow Valley, part of the Domeyko Mountains. Here you’ll find an array of coloured rocks, formed from various minerals and natural erosion in the area. After a short stroll around the valley, continue your journey to Hierbas Buenas, where you’ll see many petroglyphs of archaeological and historical significance.

You’ll need an early start for your excursion to El Tatio Geysers, which are located a couple of hour's drive from San Pedro de Atacama. These geothermal fields include more than eighty active geysers, with vapour columns spurting from the pools that can reach a dizzying height of up to 12 metres. Enjoy breakfast on site at dawn, before returning to your hotel for lunch. On the return journey, look out for local wildlife including vicunas, foxes and Andean ostriches. This excursion lasts between five and six hours, including transfers and a breakfast enroute, due to the early start. The area is located 4300 metres above sea level.

Salar de Atacama (Salt Flats)

Drive the hour south to the charming village of Toconao to see the pretty town square where local artisans selling their wares, as well as the historic church. Next stop is the Natural Flamingo Reserve, which is often teeming with the parading pink birds. The reserve is inside the salt flats, where you'll explore the trails and learn about the birdlife and their feeding habits before finding a spot to enjoy one of the area's spectacular and colourful sunsets. The excursion will last roughly five hours, including transfers.

Toco Volcano Hike

Not for the faint-hearted, this challenging four-hour hike allows experienced walkers the chance to trek to the summit of the impressive volcano, which is located 5000 metres above sea level. The journey on foot begins at roughly 2400 metres and during the ascent hikers are rewarded with spectacular views over neighbouring Bolivia, including the Blanca Lagoon and the vast Salar de Atacama salt flats. We highly recommend acclimatising to the altitude in San Pedro de Atacama for a few days before embarking on this trek.
