Operated by the government run Namibian Wildlife Resorts, Sossus Dune Lodge boasts arguably the best setting of any in the desert, spread across a wide open plain inside the Namib-Naukluft National Park itself. This prized location means that visitors can get to Sossusvlei before guests at other accommodations and leave later in the afternoon, offering privileged access to the golden sunrises and sunsets over the dunes. The 25 chalets, including two Honeymoon Suites, are eco-friendly constructions where wood dominates but canvas and thatch are also used. Large and airy inside, there are cool en-suite bathrooms and sliding glass doors that permit expansive views out to the desert or the surrounding mountains and canyons.

Everything is connected by raised wooden walkways, with the rooms on either side of the central lodge, where you will find a swimming pool and shady lounge-bar area, plus an open-air deck on which scenic meals can be served. Activities involve visits to the dunes and Sesriem Canyon, either guided or under your own steam, with the lodge lying only 4km walk from the Sesriem Gate. Post-dinner stargazing strolls are also on offer and make for a relaxing, spiritual end to a day in the desert before heading back to your comfortable room for the night.
