Located at the entrance of Mgahinga National Park, Mount Gahinga Lodge provides a fantastic base to explore this region. The nine rooms are set slightly apart from the main building, and have been designed to reflect the heritage of the Bufimbira people, with distinct patterns and colours. The lodge will appeal as a base to those wanting to track golden monkeys, which are found in the park, and also offers the challenge of hiking an extinct volcano in the Virangas. For those who want to experience the views but perhaps not the extremes of a full day climb, there is also the opportunity to Kisozi Caldera.

Tracking Golden Monkeys

If you are visiting Mgahinga National Park or Volcanoes National Park (in Rwanda), then the chance to track golden monkeys should not be missed. These beautiful primates live in dense bamboo forest areas of the Virunga Mountains, and group size varies up to around 60 animals. Tracking groups are limited in size to 6 people in total, and permits need to be arranged in advance (so let us know if you are interested). Much like gorilla and chimpanzee tracking, trackers set off in the morning and around one hour is spent with the monkeys once they have been located. It is possible to spend longer with the monkeys by taking part in a golden monkey habituation experience which lasts up to four hours accompanied by guides and researchers. This is only available at Mgahinga.

Tracking the Gorillas

For many, this is a once in a lifetime chance to get up close with mountain gorilla families and explore their habitat. Awe-inspiring, majestic and humbling, a glimpse into the social structure and lives of these primates is sure to be a talking point for months after you've travelled. Be prepared - hikes to see them can be strenuous, but you will have the back-up of expert guides and porters to assist you every step of the way. For those wanting more exclusivity (trekking groups have up to eight people), consider a full-day gorilla habituation experience instead - you spend four hours with the gorillas, alongside rangers and researchers working to habituate new groups to human visitors. The habituation experience is only available in the Rushaga sector in the southern part of Bwindi.

Hike the Virungas

Staying near Mgahinga National Park provides acccess to three extinct volanoes within the Virunga Mountain Range - Mgahinga, Sabyinyo and Muhavura, which provide a beautiful backdrop to stays in the area. These climbs require a good level of fitness, but the views at the top (especially of Muhavura) are breath-taking, spanning over Bwindi, Mt Rwenzori, Lake Edward in Queen Elizabeth National Park and other Virunga volcanoes.
