Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor

Hotel overview

A grand old building dating back to 1886, Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor is one of Egypt’s most famous and atmospheric hotels. Instantly recognisable to anyone arriving in central Luxor, it brings a sense of colonial-era elegance to the East Bank, with a story that’s closely woven into the city’s archaeological past. It was built in the late 19th century to host visiting European nobility and explorers, and it was here that Howard Carter was staying as a guest of Lord Carnarvon when he made the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

Set in a prime position on the Nile corniche, the hotel is surrounded by lush gardens and enjoys views across the river or over its own grounds. The public areas are particularly impressive, filled with antiques, sweeping staircases, oriental rugs and glittering chandeliers that lean fully into the hotel’s unashamedly colonial character. Afternoon tea is a long-standing tradition here, and dining is a special and formal affair, with an elegant French restaurant and atmospheric bars to enjoy.

The hotel has been renovated in recent years, and rooms retain their sense of grandeur, with high ceilings, period-style furnishings and individual layouts that reflect the age of the building. No two rooms are quite the same. Modern comforts such as flat-screen televisions and Wi-Fi are in place, though the overall feel remains resolutely classic rather than contemporary. Some rooms also feature private balconies, with views over the Nile or the gardens below. The large outdoor swimming pool set within the gardens, is the perfect spot to unwind for a few hours and retreat from the heat in between adventures.
