Hotel overview
Set in a secluded location on the West Bank, just a few kilometres from the Valley of the Kings, Al Moudira feels worlds away from the busier side of Luxor. It’s unlike any other hotel in the area, with a style more reminiscent of a Moroccan riad or a Damascene townhouse than a traditional international hotel. Ornate domes, peaceful courtyards, cool patios and ceramic fountains are woven through its beautifully labyrinthine layout.
Privately owned and run with great care, the service here is personal and attentive, giving the hotel a relaxed, lived-in feel that’s hard to replicate. Dining centres around a single, atmospheric restaurant, where menus change regularly, while breakfast is often enjoyed on a shaded terrace. In the gardens, dotted with colourful flowers, there’s a large swimming pool that’s especially welcome during the hotter months, along with a massage room and two hammams for extra relaxation between sightseeing.
There are around 50 rooms, each individually designed and filled with character. Decorative touches vary from room to room and can include sunken baths, chandeliers, Persian rugs, writing desks and, in some cases, even small fountains. Modern comforts such as air conditioning and satellite TV are thoughtfully included, without detracting from the hotel’s distinctive charm.
For travellers looking for stylish accommodation with a strong sense of place and a character that steers well clear of the conventional, Al Moudira is one of Luxor’s most memorable places to stay.
