Mobile Safaris (Moremi Game Reserves)

Mobile camping essentially involves moving from one destination to the next, with short stays in each, using temporary camps that are set up anew at each site. These safaris are outstanding in Botswana, partially as a potential way to visit the highlights without breaking the bank, and also as a means of getting a vintage, old fashioned safari ambience with a close to nature feel. With more public access than in the Delta's private concessions, mobile safaris in the Moremi really come into their own, with itineraries that can explore most areas of the reserve from the Khwai River to the Xakanaxa Lagoon. Activities tend to revolve around game drives although there are sometimes walking safaris, boating and mokoros that can also be enjoyed, depending on the time of year and your route. Some of the attractions include a morning coffee after waking up to the sun streaming through your tent, evening drinks around a roaring campfire and, of course, the sound of animals around camp as you drop off to sleep after a rewarding day's game viewing.

Game Drives (Moremi Game Reserve)

Although there are some wet camps within the Moremi Reserve, game drives tend to dominate the activity list for most accommodations, whether you are in the Mopane Tongue or on Chief's Island. All of the Big 5 can be found within the Moremi's varied habitats, and game drives still represent the best possible chance of getting close to the broadest range of animals. Extended game drives with top guides are almost always included in your safari, especially when staying at the more coveted camps with the best guides. It's usually an early start for breakfast before setting off on a drive as the sun slowly rises: a cool but utterly enchanting time to be on the road, as the bush slowly wakes up and wildlife emerges to face the day. There are frequent stops to view animals, learn about the flora and fauna from your guide, take photographs and enjoy refreshments. Unfortunately, park restrictions mean that off-road driving and night drives are not permitted within the Moremi, so you will be following a well-trodden network of routes and will probably see other vehicles, unless you are in a private area within the reserve such as Xigera or Mombo. However, this makes the guides even more determined to fit in as much wildlife as possible during daylight hours, so get ready for an impressive parade of animals!

Boat Cruises (Moremi Game Reserve)

Motorboat cruises in the deeper channels and lagoons, or on the various rivers and tributaries, are a highly enjoyable Moremi activity, with higher game viewing potential than mokoro excursions and a more tranquil feel then game drives. Late afternoon cruises can be particularly enjoyable, as you watch the sun set beautifully over the waters with a drink in hand before making your way back to camp for aperitifs and dinner. Some of the camps now have impressive double decker boats, on which you can clamber up to the top deck to widen the views and feel the wind a little stronger in your hair, but the more traditional one-storey crafts are just as effective in searching out the best wildlife and scenery spots. Wildlife encounters will always involve hippo, and you will almost certainly see crocodiles basking in the sun, water based antelope running through the shallower waters, and elephant and buffalo arriving to drink and graze. The varied, colourful birdlife on the water is extremely impressive, and it is not unheard of to see predators on the riverbank from a boat, although these are generally scared off by the engine noise. At its best, such as from camps like Xigera, Okuti and Camp Moremi, a serene and slow cruise through the expansive waters is a Delta experience not to be missed.
