Designed with families in mind, our ‘Summer Family Adventure’ itinerary takes in Sri Lanka’s UNESCO World Heritage highlights, some safari and marine wildlife spotting, lush green tea estates and mountains, as well as some all-important beach time to relax. We know that when travelling with children or teenagers it’s important to not get carried away with multiple stops and long car journeys which is why we have designed this tour which only includes three main locations and transfers of max. 4 hours.
Staying in the heart of the Cultural Triangle will allow you to visit the nearby UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the Dambulla Cave Temples, Polonnaruwa Ancient City ruins (which can also be explored via bicycle) and climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Food in Sri Lanka is truly varied and delicious so we recommend visiting a local village for a traditional Sri Lankan curry and rice. Minneriya National Park is also not too far away and is known for its high numbers of wild elephant, especially during the summer months, which is always a welcome spot on safari!
There are more wildlife encounters during your beach stay with whale and dolphin watching from Trincomalee, and the snorkelling and diving at Pigeon Island just off the coast is wonderful. Trincomalee also has a huge natural harbour and plenty of history so you can do some sightseeing or simply relax with your family on the beach.
Next you’ll head to the Knuckles Mountains or Digana. These spots are perfect for families as they offer plenty of activities such as kayaking, paddle-boarding, mountain hikes, nature trails or sightseeing in nearby Kandy. For those wanting some relaxation time you can chill by the pool overlooking stunning scenery, do a cookery demonstration, or go for a picnic down by Victoria reservoir.
Finally you will make the famous scenic train journey from Kandy to Hatton, passing through the tea estates and tiny rural villages of the Hill Country, spotting the tea pickers in the plantations and waterfalls with mountainous backdrops. From here you’ll continue back to the capital city of Colombo for your final night.
3 nights Sigiriya – 5 nights Trincomalee Beach – 3 nights Digana/Knuckles – 1 night Colombo
Not travelling as a family? Worry not, this holiday is also perfect for couples or honeymooners looking for a romantic, cultural and nature based escape to Sri Lanka.
