Sloth Tour

Arenal area is well known for its diverse wildlife, including the two different sloth species; the two-toed sloths and three-toed sloths. Black eye patches and “smiling” mouths distinguish Costa Rica’s docile three-toed sloths, while the larger two-toed variety have white-ringed faces, brown snouts and shaggy coats. Sloths are especially unique in that they spend nearly their entire lives hanging upside down in a tree; they sleep, eat, mate and even give birth upside down! With your certified naturalist guide, an expert at locating wildlife and extremely knowledgeable in their field you will go on a search for these beautiful animals around La Fortuna's beautiful Sloth spotting areas, you will also have a chance encounter of toucans, red blue jeans poison dart frogs, hummingbirds, iguanas and monkeys.

Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge

Close to the border with Nicaragua, the vast seasonally-flooded wetland reserve of Caño Negro is one of the best destinations in Costa Rica for viewing wildlife and birds. The journey from Arenal can take between two and three hours, but it is well worth the early start for the opportunity to spot species such Central America’s largest bird, the Jabiru stork, three-toed sloths, enormous caiman and basilisk lizards as well as three of Costa Rica’s four species of monkey. After a gentle three-hour boat safari led by an expert naturalist guide, you will enjoy a typical Costa Rican lunch at a local restaurant before making the return journey back to Arenal.

La Fortuna Waterfall & Chocolate Tour

Your tour today will begin with a 2 hour 'chocolate experience' where you will learn about the production of one of Central America's most famous exports, from the harvesting of the fruit to the drying and grinding of the cacao bean, right through to sampling some of the finished product! You will then transfer to La Fortuna waterfall for a gentle hike to enjoy the views and perhaps take a refreshing swim in its natural pool.

Kayaking on Lake Arenal

You will be collected from your hotel for the short drive out of La Fortuna town to the shores of Lake Arenal, the second largest lake in Central America. This vast expanse of water set against a backdrop of dense forests lends itself to a very scenic kayaking expedition, of approximately three hours in duration. You will be led by an expert local guide, and all equipment is supplied as well as cold drinks and a snack of tropical fruits.

Arenal mountain biking

Your mountain biking excursion today will begin with a relaxing ride through tropical forest on a paved road, along the old route that used to connect the Arenal Dam with the main entrance to the volcano national park. From here you will continue towards the village of El Castillo, biking on a quiet road surrounded by dense forest and cattle farms, where you may be able to hear the distant calls of toucans and howler monkeys. Depending on the conditions and preferences of the rest of the group, the final section of cycling make take you across the dam and along a scenic stretch along the north shore of Lake Arenal. The maximum distance covered on this excursion is eight miles and it is suitable for all abilities.
