Wikwemikong Indigenous Experiences offers guided cultural and nature-based tours on Manitoulin Island and in Killarney, sharing the history, traditions, and land-based knowledge of Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory. These experiences are a brilliant way to go beyond the scenery and understand the story of the land and the people, through Indigenous-led guiding that’s thoughtful, informative, and genuinely engaging.
Experiences range from powerful historical interpretation to soft-adventure outings, so you can choose something that fits your interests and energy levels. One of the standout options is The Unceded Journey, a moving, educational tour that explores the true history of Odawa Mnis (Manitoulin Island) and Wiikwemkoong, Canada’s only officially recognised Unceded Territory. It includes stops at key historic sites and is designed to deepen understanding and support the concept of reconciliation through honest storytelling and context.
If you’d rather be active, Bebamikewe (Making Footprints) is an interpretive hike along the Bebamikawe Memorial Trail, combining medicinal plant teachings with stories of historic encounters, clan teachings, and connections to the landscape. The route is adaptable, but the trail is generally intermediate, so hiking shoes are recommended. For time on the water, Bay of the Beaver follows a traditional canoe route in a voyager canoe, with sensory demonstrations of aquatic plants and the chance to learn local legends and history as you paddle the Lake Huron shoreline with views towards the La Cloche Mountains. It’s suitable for both first-timers and experienced paddlers.
For something really memorable, there are also Indigenous Culinary Experiences, which combine foraging on the trail with hands-on cooking over an open fire in an outdoor culinary space. Options include venison cooked on hot stone, and trout prepared using traditional methods (clay-baked or cedar plank), paired with hot or cold herbal teas made from locally foraged plants. These experiences are small-group by nature and need allergies flagged at the time of booking.
Tours typically operate seasonally between May and October, with most departures running Monday to Saturday, and specific start times varying by experience. As with all activities, final timings and availability are confirmed at the point of booking, and your confirmation will always take precedence.
