Algonquin - Ideas for Free Time

Spending time in Algonquin is all about being outdoors, exploring the wilderness, and stopping once in a while to admire the view. There are several self-guided trails around the park, each designed to highlight a different aspect of Algonquin’s environment. Interpretive booklets are available at the individual trailheads. Bike rentals are available at Lake of Two Rivers, with both gentle and more challenging bicycle paths accessible from this location. Canoes can be rented at a couple of lakefront locations, allowing you to paddle along the shores in search of wildlife. This area was originally settled in the 1800s by pioneering loggers, and despite its protected status, logging continues in the park today. The Algonquin Logging Museum offers an interesting insight into the history of the settlers and how the park balances current environmental concerns with a still-prosperous industry.

Lake Huron – Ideas for Free Time

The first thing to do in this area is to dip your toes into Lake Huron and marvel at the sheer size of this inland expanse of water. Once you’ve done that, take a more challenging walk on the Bruce Peninsula and explore the rocky shorelines, which provide a striking contrast to some of the nearby sandy beaches. From Tobermory, you can hop on a boat trip into Fathom Five National Marine Park to see fascinating geological formations and shipwrecks at the mouth of Georgian Bay.
