[content] => A glittering metropolis, Kuala Lumpur (or KL as it is more fondly known) is the ideal starting point or end point of any Malaysian adventure. The quirky capital will draw you in with the historic temples, colonial architecture, soaring skyscrapers, acres of green city parks, bustling markets and shopping malls that could distract any fashionista for days.
Incredibly easy to navigate, and with the city centre itself relatively compact, you can stroll the streets from sight to sight, stopping to enjoy delicious hawker fare or hop on the monorail and zip around the city like a local. Major tourist highlights in Kuala Lumpur include Merdeka Square, Istana Budaya, Menara KL Tower, Chinatown, National Monument (Tugu Negara) and of course, the iconic Petronas Towers with an observation deck for taking in the beautiful KL skyline. Other sights we recommend include the Batu Caves to the north of the city, Aquaria KLCC if travelling with children and Central Market close to Petaling Street in Chinatown. The Perdana Botanical Gardens has a great Orchid Garden and quaint tearoom, or spend some time learning more about the history and culture of Malaysia at the National Museum.
For us, travel to KL is all about staying central and our top areas to achieve this are Bukit Bintang, KLCC and Chinatown. Bukit Bintang is right in the heart of KL and offers a huge mix of accommodation, as well as diverse dining options. Shopaholics will be in heaven here, as well as those looking for happening places to enjoy a drink day or night. Connected via a walkway from the Pavilion shopping centre, KLCC is another great hotel hot spot, especially if you fancy a room with a view of the Petronas Twin Towers. Nightlife here is a little classier, with some excellent rooftop bars, as well as very high end restaurants at some of the top hotels in the area. Bargain hunters may be better heading to Chinatown to enjoy the oriental vibes and the great value food and rooms. Several markets can be found here, as well as some lively watering holes and hip coffee shops.

[content] => Previously seen as a sterile city of predictability, Singapore has reinvented itself as one of the world’s hottest destinations and, with a short stopover in this dazzling city, it won’t take you long to find out why.
For travellers looking for a direct springboard into Asia, Singapore is the perfect choice with a number of airlines offering non-stop flights straight into the city. Step off the plane and start soaking up the sensational atmosphere in the Garden City. Famous for hosting the Formula 1 Grand Prix, Singapore offers a wealth of well-known attractions including the Singapore Zoo with its thrilling night safari, the blooming Botanical Gardens and the legendary five-star Raffles Hotel home to the Singapore Sling. However, with a medley of Chinese, Malay and Indian influences, combined with towering skyscrapers, wall-to-wall shopping malls and bustling hawker centres, the ‘Switzerland of Asia’ is sure to offer you plenty of variety.
A pint-sized country, Singapore is home to over 300 parks and 4 nature reserves and offers an unexpected wonderland for fans of all things green and natural. For an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city get lost amongst the ancient rainforests, swampy wetlands and sleepy farms or bumboat across to Pulau Ubin to discover the rustic unspoiled beauty of Singapore back in the 1960s.
Singapore is a melting pot of cuisines from around the world, and many Singaporeans are obsessive gourmands so it’s no surprise to hear that your taste buds will be truly tantalised during your stopover in Singapore (don’t forget to try the Chilli Crab!). From the legendary hawker centres and 24-hour coffee shops to the vibrant fine dining scene rife with Michelin-starred restaurants, the food here is legendary and you'll find it steaming, sizzling and simmering almost everywhere you look.
Singapore’s nightlife scene has exploded into a dizzying whirl of music, drink and entertainment that caters to both party animals and those seeking a quieter night out – all around the clock. Dance to the beats of world-class DJs at a mega club, enjoy a bespoke tipple at a discreet cocktail bar or check out a live band before having a big laugh at a comedy club. Crank up the volume or dial it down to a more comfortable pace but don’t miss out on a sundowner on the 57th floor of the Marina Bay Sands for unforgettable sweeping city views!

[title] => Penang
[oldid] => 6198
[alias] => penang
[id] => 258
[state] => 1
[content] => Penang - the 'Pearl of the Orient' - is one of the most visited destinations within Malaysia, and with very good reason. The natural beauty, cultural splendour, exceptional cuisine available and eventful history draws in countless tourists to the small island off of the northwest shores of Peninsular Malaysia. Penang gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008, with the pedestrian friendly centre of Georgetown the liveliest district and best spot to base yourself during your time here. Boutique hotels galore, charming Chinese temples and clan houses, as well as graffiti lined streets and hipster cafes keep the area quirky and interesting enough for stays of at least 2 to 3 nights, even a week long stay here is an absolute pleasure. The beaches around the island are perfect family spots to enjoy relaxation, and sightseeing tours can be enjoyed including visits to Penang Hill, Snake Temple, Tropical Spice Garden, as well as the many markets dotted around town. Families can also enjoy the interactive museums and adventure parks if traditional sightseeing is taking its toll.
Be sure to explore the centre of Georgetown on foot, walking the heritage trails and keeping a camera close to snap the fascinating street art as you go. The famous Blue Mansion (Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion) should also not be missed, as well Khoo Khongsi, a former Chinese Clan House for the Khoo family.

[content] => It’s not hard to understand why the historic centre of Malacca was crowned with UNESCO glory in 2008 – the colourful colonial shophouses, historic landmarks and great variety of religious buildings have all contributed. But it is the melting pot of cultures here that really make the city so beautiful.
A quaint fishing village in the 14th century, the strategic location between China and India turned Malacca into a renowned port attracting traders from across the East. Chinese settlers later arrived following the alliance with the Chinese Muslim Admiral Cheng Ho and the state adopted Islam by the 15th Century. A prosperous port, Malacca soon saw centuries of conflict and change; the Portuguese came to conquer in 1509, the Dutch invaded in 1641 and finally the British assumed control in 1824. Returning again to a peaceful port, Malacca has finally seen its revival and is a highlight for those who take the time to visit.
Don’t be foolish enough to write off Malacca if you’re not a history buff at heart. The fantastic cafes dotted around the historic centre, homegrown art galleries and leisurely river cruises mean Malacca has a very laid back heart ideal for a day or two of utter charm away from big city life.
Hagglers be sure to head here over the weekend to stroll through the trinket sellers on the famous Jonker Walk Night Market. Food hawkers are also out in force and many of the small cafes set up tables and chairs on the closed off streets. For a more impressive culinary journey you can enjoy a wide range of multi-cultural dishes to tantalise your taste buds including the local ‘Nonya’ or Peranakan cuisine.
Keep your eyes peeled and cameras close for Malacca’s resident monitor lizards. Harmless to visitors they enjoy a spot of sunbathing on the riverbanks, or at times around town, but these reptiles are harmless and help to keep the river clean.

[content] => Named from the Thai 'Pang Ko', which means Beautiful Island, the Pangkor Islands certainly don't disappoint. The Islands of Pangkor and Pangkor Laut offer white sand beaches, crystal clear waters and tropical interiors in a small but perfectly formed setting. Pangkor Island is a fishing village island with a range of accommodations, just 3 1/2 hours by car and boat or 35 minutes by air from Kuala Lumpur, with the tiny private island of Pangkor Laut just 40 minutes further away and home to one super luxurious resort. Wildlife lovers can enjoy monkey spotting, or witnessing the colourful hornbills, with wildlife eco tourism on the up here. A favourite spot to stay up close with nature is the beautiful Tigers Rock - think tropical gardens enclosing a refreshing pool, colourful artwork, breezy open air living and an abundance of fine Malay cuisine. The creepy crawlies enjoy close quarters but we absolutely love it. For something astonishingly luxurious splash out on the Pangkor Laut Resort on your own private island. Lap up the sunshine and relax on one of the most idyllic beaches in southeast Asia. If you need things to do then there is snorkelling aplenty and some hotels feature water sports or jet skis to keep everyone entertained.

[title] => Cameron Highlands & Ipoh
[oldid] => 6202
[alias] => cameron-highlands-ipoh
[id] => 262
[state] => 1
[content] => The cooling temperatures of the Cameron Highlands have long attracted the British, and that doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon. Named after explorer Sir William Cameron, the emerald tea plantations that roll across the valleys make up Malaysia’s largest hill station and capital of tea. Dotted with small townships the highlands were developed during the British colonial period and are noted for the beautiful orchards, strawberry farms, thundering waterfalls and relatively refreshing treks within the tea plantations and mossy forest. To recharge your batteries, take time out to enjoy a traditionally English high tea, tour the industrial tea factories or visit the Tudor style county inns to soak up the stunning panoramic views over Malaysia’s most iconic highland resort.
An up-and-coming city beautified by the murals adorned on the colonial buildings by Ernest Zacharevi and the restoration of old shophouses now home to hip cafes, Ipoh is slowly becoming a sought-after destination for travellers in the know. Surrounded by limestone hulks, Ipoh has long been used only as a gateway to the areas beautiful caves and hot springs, but with the rise in café culture, boutique hotels and museums in the historic centre, Ipoh now has much more to offer. It’s also home to some celebrated British colonial architecture including the railways stations, town hall and old world schools including the century old St Michaels. Now one of south-east Asia’s hidden foodie hot spots, we recommend taking time to explore Old Town’s quirky cafes or heading to Ipoh Soho for a rather out there robotic dining experience. Families can also enjoy action packed adventure at the Lost World Of Tambun theme park just out of town.

[title] => Perhentian Islands
[oldid] => 6203
[alias] => perhentian-islands
[id] => 263
[state] => 1
[content] => Lying 21km off the northeast coast of Terengganu are the pristine Perhentian Islands. Famed as Malaysia’s version of the Maldives, the Perhentians white sand palm fringed beaches offer the ultimate in laid back lifestyle and some of the most incredible snorkelling and diving in the country. The islands are made up of Pulau Perhentian Besar (The Big Island) and Pulau Perhentian Kecil (The Small Island) – each with very different personalities. Kecil attracts more travellers as it has cheaper accommodation and livelier nightlife, while Besar is a little more expensive and caters more to families. If you aren’t sure which one to choose then don’t worry – boat taxis can whizz you between the sandy shores day and night.
With a lack of international hotels, accommodation on the islands is small and quirky, making it the perfect place for those wanting to escape expensive hotels and big city chains. The shores are peppered with local cafes and food stalls selling fresh seafood and Malaysian specialities, giving you plenty of choice no matter where you stay.
The crystal clear turquoise seas are home to an abundance of marine life – swim amongst turtles, sharks, rays and beautiful coral reef teeming with tropical fish. More than 20 dive sites can be found around the islands with dive shops available at both islands. The rocky virgin jungle interior provides adventures for trekkers – search out the flying foxes, long tailed macaques and resident monitor lizards.
The Perhentian Islands are just one of the many hidden gems in Malaysia’s treasure box – we guarantee you won’t want to leave!

[title] => Kuala Terengganu & Redang Island
[oldid] => 6341
[alias] => kuala-terengganu-redang-island
[id] => 264
[state] => 1
[content] => Rich in Malay culture, Terengganu is the epitome of rustic charm with quaint fishing villages and a rich cultural heritage. Under an hour by air from Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Terengganu is the capital city of the Terengganu State. Known as the “Gem of the East Coast”, Terengganu is home to the longest stretch of untouched beaches in Malaysia. With dazzling white sands, crystal clear waters and colourful coral gardens, the underwater treasures are plentiful, and the area is a must for an idyllic getaway.
The magnificent architecture adds to the charm of the region. Marvel at the majestic Tengku Tengha Zaharah Mosque, which appears to be floating. One of the most beautiful mosques in the world is also located here – the Crystal Mosque, a grand structure constructed of steel and glass to glitter like crystal. Crafts are also popular in Terengganu, including wood craft and artisan boat making. The original host to the Monsoon Cup, Pulau Duyung offers a chance to meeting the boat makers and take a tour of the traditional workshops. Many visitors find the relatively rural and tranquil atmosphere in the state of Terengganu conducive to a tranquil holiday.
Located 45km off the coast of Kuala Terengganu, Redang is one of the largest (6km by 7km) islands dotting the north east coast of Malaysia. Nestled within a marine park in the South China Sea, Redang is surrounded by one of the bluest oceans on earth and powder white sands. This tropical island escape should be on the wish list of anyone looking for a serene escape. Avid divers and snorkellers can explore the protected reefs around Redang and over 30 dive sites. Expect to see turtles, reef sharks, moray eels, barracuda, trigger fish, giant stingray, octopus and huge parrot fish.

[title] => Taman Negara National Park
[oldid] => 6343
[alias] => taman-negara-national-park
[id] => 265
[state] => 1
[content] => A virgin jungle over 130 million years old, Taman Negara was established in 1939 and is the largest park in peninsular Malaysia reputed to be The Best Kept Tropical Rainforest, thanks to its protected status. The vast expanse of Taman Negara encompasses three states; Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu and is home to rare mammals including the Malayan tiger, Malayan gaur (seladang) and Asian elephant. Sightings of the larger mammals are scarce due to the dense fauna and flora but deer, wild boar, tapirs, monkeys and many species of bird are commonly spotted. Night walks offer a great opportunity to spot temple pit vipers, lizards, tarantulas and a whole host of fascinating creepy crawlies.
The most popular activities at Taman Negara are river cruises and jungle trekking. The canopy walk is a must, offering a fantastic close up view of activity in the rainforest canopy.
Due to its central location Taman Negara is easily added in to any itinerary and is the perfect destination for those unable to travel to the jungles of Borneo. A three to four hour drive from Kuala Lumpur followed by a boat journey up the Tembeling River brings you to the world’s oldest tropical rainforest and Peninsular Malaysia’s number one nature treasure.

[alias] => kota-bharu
[id] => 266
[state] => 1
[content] => Often overlooked as a stopover on the way to the Perhentians or East coast islands, Kota Bharu is a cultural melting pot with strong Islamic and Muslim influences. A small town with an incredibly friendly vibe, you can enjoy some delicious local cuisine, vibrant local markets and day trips to local villages, taking you truly off the beaten path. Gain an insight into local life and days gone by with a visit to the cluster of museums around the Padang Merdeka area - Istana Jahar is our top choice, not only for the displays but it is also housed in a beautiful building from the 19th-Century. Visits to local villages allow access to traditional Malay arts and crafts but you can also enjoy cultural events at the Gelanggang Seni including kite making, drumming and silat (martial arts), which are all enjoyable for both adults and children. Cooking classes and batik painting are also possible in Kota Bharu. The Batik Factory is also worth a visit to learn more about this indigenous craft. Staying locally the accommodation is relatively simple but it is certainly comfortable. One thing we must point out is that the hotels here are generally dry, so a tipple may not be an option. Eating out is however very easy and you can enjoy the local night market for some traditional Malay dishes or you prefer Chinese the restaurants in town are a good bet.

[title] => Tioman Island
[oldid] => 6402
[alias] => tioman-island
[id] => 267
[state] => 1
[content] => A slice of emerald jungle paradise surrounded by crystal azure waters teeming with life, Tioman Island is an idyllic escape just 32km off the east coast. Declared in the seventies as one of the most beautiful islands in the world, very little has changed. The pace of life is refreshingly slow, WIFI is limited and days can be lazed away listening to the sounds of the jungle.
The warm waters that surround are ideal for snorkelling and diving, with diverse marine life including common sightings of turtles, barracuda, black-tip reef sharks and even nemo! Many resorts offering snorkelling directly from the shore and equipment is included or can easily be rented. Some also have inhouse dive centres.
With the inland covered in thick jungle, hiking is a popular pursuit. Many resorts have their own trails, or for the more adventurous you can trek from Tekek to Juara across the island in 2 hours. Visits to waterfalls and local villages are also possible, as well as deep sea fishing, kayaking and golf. To cap off a lazy day in Tioman, lounge by the ocean and enjoy a refreshingly cheap beer as the island has duty free status, keeping costs down more here than elsewhere in Malaysia.
Much of the accommodation is in the form of simple family run chalets, but our top picks are boutique style offerings on the southern coast. Some places batten down the hatches for the monsoon season but a few in Tioman keep their shutters up throughout the year. We only recommend the island to surfers during the monsoon, as the waves can get pretty fierce. March to October is the best time to visit but be warned that most hotels get busy during the summer months of July and August, so book well in advance to snag the best rooms at our preferred hotels.
Some are put off by the journey to get here, but don’t be foolish - this tropical paradise is worth every second of the drive and boat journey to get here!

[title] => Ulu Muda Forest Reserve
[oldid] => 6461
[alias] => ulu-muda-forest-reserve
[id] => 268
[state] => 1
[content] => The Greater Ulu Muda forest complex in Kedah is the largest remaining tract of contiguous rainforest in north-western Peninsular Malaysia and the ideal escape from the tourists in other national parks. Spanning 160,000 hectares the remote and isolated forest is an important reserve for many large mammals and is thick with salt licks and old-growth rainforest. Getting here is not a simple task and visitors must travel by road before a 2 hour sampan boat, but the journey is most certainly worth it. As well as birds and reptiles galore, it offers a reasonable chance of encountering elephants and tapir, a chance of spotting the clouded leopard, and whilst they roam the rainforest in the area the resident tigers are a little harder to spot. Sightings of sun bear can also be made but are less likely.
Birdlife is especially abundant with over 306 species and all 10 Malaysian hornbills sited in the area. For Bird watchers it is recommended for the maximum hornbill sighting’s to visit during May through to September. February to September water levels are the lowest so sighting’s should be better during this time.
Explore jungle trails, rivers, limestone hills, caves, and salt licks while you enjoy boat rides and observe wildlife during your stay in this magnificent forest.

[title] => Belum Rainforest
[oldid] => 6462
[alias] => belum-rainforest
[id] => 269
[state] => 1
[content] => Peninsular Malaysia’s largest expanse of virgin jungle, Belum-Temengor Rainforest, lies in the northern area of Perak state. Over 130 million years in age Belum is one of the oldest rainforests in the world, dating back further than the Amazon or Congo. In the heart of the forest lies the manmade lake Temenggor, covering 15,200 Hectares which is dotted with hundreds of islands. The park is home to 14 of the world’s most threatened mammals including the Malaysian Tiger, white-handed Gibbon, Asiatic Elephant, Malaysian Sunbear and Malayan Tapir, who still roam freely within the wild habitats of Belum. Other animals include wild boar, deer, pythons and cobras. The pristine forest also houses over 3,000 species of flowering plants, including the largest flower in the world – the Rafflesia.
The stunning landscapes of Belum Rainforest are also a must for birders with over 300 avian species calling the park home. All 10 species of hornbill fly over Belum, namely white-crowned hornbill, bushy-crested hornbill, wrinkled hornbill, wreathed hornbill, plain-pouched hornbill, black hornbill, Oriental pied hornbill, rhinoceros hornbill, great hornbill and helmeted hornbill.
There is plenty to see and do around Belum, most of which is best explored by boat tours or on an overnight houseboat adventure. Among the activities are; jungle trails, thundering waterfalls, lookout towers, the search for the Rafflesia and visits to authentic Orang Asli villages.

With a multicultural society, mile upon mile of primary jungle and an array of delicious cuisines, Malaysia is an extremely exotic, colourful country that’s often a real surprise to the first-time visitor (and even those returning!). A visit to Peninsular Malaysia really does have something for everybody – thriving modern cities, cultural richness, pristine white sand beaches, lush green landscapes and jungle-clad mountains. Start in the vibrant metropolis of Kuala Lumpur to visit the impressive Petronas Towers set amongst classical colonial architecture before a jaunt to the “Historic State” of Malacca. Further north, the former spice trading port of Penang is a must on our list, or for a taste of luxury escape to the island rain forest of Langkawi on the west coast. Everything is certainly possible in Malaysia, and travel is made incredibly easy with the excellent infrastructure throughout the country.
With high temperatures and humidity year-round, Malaysia has a tropical climate that offers year-round travel. Temperatures average at around 25°C with humidity sitting at around 70-90%. Showers do occur throughout the year, with the wet season on the east coast from November to February and on the west coast from April to October. The East Coast is driest between April and October, and the West Coast is driest from November to February.
The best time to visit most of the region is from March to October. Travel during January and February, whilst somewhat wet, is very rewarding due to the significant festivals including Chinese New Year and Thaipusam. Beach holidays are possible throughout the year due to the opposite wet seasons in peninsular Malaysia.
If you're planning to combine your Malaysia holiday with some time in Borneo, the best time to visit Borneo is from May to September. This time of year, the days are warm and dry, but you do need to book well in advance as accommodation shortages are common. The wettest months in Borneo are from November to February. Temperatures year-round are on average 27-30°C, with humidity of 80%.
Malaysia’s cuisine is the culmination of dozens of influences from its multicultural Malay, Indian, Chinese and Eurasian population. Experimenting with the local flavours and getting out of your comfort zone couldn't be easier in Malaysia; the food is divine, the hygiene standards are incredibly high and most vendors speak excellent English, which means no nasty surprises!
The culinary scene is diverse and throughout the country you can enjoy Michelin-style sit downs, cheap and cheerful roadside fare, or try your hand at making something for yourself in one of the many cooking schools dotted around the tourist hubs.
What to eat in Malaysia
When dining out, a Malay meal usually revolves around rice (nasi) or noodles (mee), accompanied by curries, fried chicken or fish, vegetable dishes, and small portions of condiments, called sambal. One of the most famous Malay dishes is satay; marinated barbecue meat skewers dipped or covered in a peanut sauce and you can find this just about anywhere in Malaysia. Another culinary favourite is ikan bakar; fish covered in chilli sauce and grilled in foil over an open flame. A few typical dishes we recommend trying during your travels include Nasi Lemak, Nasi Goreng, Wan Tan Mee, Marmite Chicken, Sateh, Carrotcake, Dimsum and Beef Rendang.
If you fancy something a little more adventurous, then seek out these dishes; Siat or Butod – stir fried sago grubs (a popular protein source in Sabah!) or, if you’re brave enough, Sup Torpedo – Malay bull’s penis soup (found in Georgetown, Penang).
Turning to something a little sweeter, Malaysian's love the sweet stuff and you’ll find just as many dessert shops, bakeries, candy stores and cake shops as you will local restaurants and food courts. The Malaysian sweets, Kuih, incorporate coconut and palm sugar, combined with sweet and savoury flavours. Or, if you’re looking for something a little more familiar then you won’t have to look far to find waffles, pancakes, ice cream or cakes.
What to drink in Malaysia
Although many people think Malaysia is a dry country, this is certainly not true and alcohol is available throughout most states easily and cheaply. However, tourists heading to the East of the country should be prepared that prices may be inflated within the resorts. Outside of hotels, finding alcohol can be a little trickier, so you may need to pick up a supply as you head through duty free. Away from alcohol you can quench your thirst with these popular Malay beverages; Teh Tarik – Malaysian pulled tea, Barley Juice, White Coffee, Longan Juice or an English inspired tea from the central plantations.
Finding places to eat is never a hard task, and the locals will recommend you visit the hawker stalls, and we would have to agree. Many designated streets in towns or cities will transform by night into buzzing food courts. Head here and you’ll be sure to find cheap eats, drinks and probably some great conversation with the locals. We can’t think of a better way to immerse yourself in local culture. By day, you can visit the food courts in shopping malls, or visit a Kopitiam – old-style, single-owner coffee shops, or Restoran – casual international-style restaurants.
We love our food here at HA, so we’ll be more than happy to recommend our favourite spots!
You can fly direct to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with British Airways or Malaysian Airlines. Or, simply hop over the border from Singapore, where you can get a direct flight from London with Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Qantas, Norwegian Air or Virgin Atlantic. Indirect flights are also available to Kuala Lumpur or other cities with one stop via major hubs including Amsterdam (KLM), Paris (AirFrance), Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Abu Dhabi (Etihad), Dubai (Emirates), Muscat (Oman Air), Doha (Qatar), Bangkok (BA, EVA Air, Thai Airways), Singapore (Singapore Airlines, Silk AIr) and Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific). It's easy to break up the journey in these places if you fancy, perhaps adding on a city or beach break in Thailand or Dubai, or a city break in Singapore or Hong Kong.
A host of other airlines, European and Middle Eastern, fly to South-East Asia via their respective hubs, but rarely are these cheaper or more convenient. However, some do offer more options for those travelling from regional UK airports.
We price up our flights on a case-by-case basis, making sure we use the best available deals for your trip. If you have any particular preferences for airlines or routes, or are considering upgrading your flights, please let us know so we can include this in your holiday plans.
British nationals don’t need a visa to visit Malaysia (including Sabah & Sarawak in Borneo) and will normally be given permission to stay for three months on arrival. Visas for longer stays or non-tourist purposes must be obtained prior to travel. For other passport holders, please check with your local Malaysian embassy or consulate for entry requirements.
To enter Malaysia, your passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the date of departure from Malaysia.
Comfortable lightweight clothing in natural fabrics such as cotton is most suitable for travelling in Malaysia. The dress code is fairly casual as in most parts of the tropics but it is advisable to cover arms and legs in the evenings to protect yourself against biting insects. A lightweight raincoat and umbrella are a good idea in the rainy season and an umbrella can also offer useful shade from the sun.
We’d recommend packing some warm clothing if you’re planning to visit the Cameron Highlights, where temperatures can drop considerably as you increase in altitude. Visitors shouldn’t wear shorts, short skirts or other revealing clothing when visiting religious sites and ladies should always carry a scarf in case they wish to visit a mosque.
If you’re including travel to Borneo on your holiday, you’ll need to pack trekking boots or sturdy footwear as well as additional equipment depending on the activities you are booking. As always, we’re here to help advise wherever we can!
As we’re not medical experts we feel it is essential you contact your G.P. regarding vaccinations and the like for travel to Malaysia. In addition to such vaccinations as you’d routinely have for living in the UK, further boosters are recommended for Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Polio and Tetanus. If you have visited a country where Yellow Fever is endemic, you will need a certificate of vaccination.
You must talk to your GP first, but it is worth also drawing your attention to this useful website: traveldoctor.co.uk – an interactive website providing specialist health information for travellers plus customised lists of travel medicines, vaccines for holidaymakers, global adventure travellers and expeditions.
Malaria is present in pockets of deep hinterland areas of Sabah and Sarawak and a central area of Peninsular Malaysia. There is low to no risk in Kuala Lumpur, other urban/suburban areas and coastal areas.
Malaysia is an extremely welcoming country, making it a real pleasure to explore. The locals will be extremely friendly but it's worth being aware of some simple things – smile a lot, remove shoes before visiting a Malaysian home, use your left hand to accept objects, ask permission to take photos, don’t kiss in public or sunbathe nude and don’t ever raise your voice – getting visibly angry with people will prove to be totally counter-productive. If you have a problem, remain calm and become increasingly polite, and you will be helped.
We believe travel should be a force for good. That means exploring with open eyes, treading lightly, and respecting the people and places that make the world so special. Our code of conduct isn’t about rules, it’s simply a guide to help you travel thoughtfully, ethically, and with care. Because every small choice makes a big difference.
If you choose to trust us with your holiday, we’ll send you a “Travel Facts” document when confirming your booking. This includes useful facts and travel advice, such as restaurant recommendations, reading tips, basic language information, cultural traditions, climate information, brief historical overviews, and more. We feel that this offers a useful insight and can help you interact with local residents in a more sensitive, well-informed manner. Please do try to take the time to read this information before your visit, it’s worth the time!
A number of the countries in which we operate holidays are religious societies with a widely observed set of customs. Always respect these norms, particularly when visiting religious buildings.
To the best of our knowledge, all hotels, lodges, and camps within our portfolio operate stringent measures to minimise water usage. All of our destinations have issues with water supplies to a certain extent, so feel free to raise any possible wastage should you encounter it during your stay, either with the accommodation or with us upon your return.
Please ask permission before taking photographs of people, and respect their wishes if they are not happy to be photographed. We find that friendly requests and a smile are usually met with a ‘yes!’
Strive, where possible, to make your own contribution to environmental practices as you travel. This might include minimising your electricity usage, not smoking in protected areas, avoiding coral while snorkelling, and safely disposing of all litter (recycling where possible).
Where possible, try to purchase from local suppliers. This includes shopping for souvenirs, dining out at restaurants, and booking additional excursions during your free time. In areas where haggling is an accepted part of daily life, don’t be offended if you’re unable to obtain what you perceive as a fair price for an item.
We emphasise to local suppliers that our clients should never be taken on unsolicited shopping trips, but if this does happen, try to retain your sense of humour, provide a firm refusal to participate and do let us know about it on your return. We pass on all feedback from every trip undertaken with us to our relevant local suppliers, who all share our commitment to travelling with sensitivity.
Please don’t remove any indigenous items from their natural habitat and attempt to bring them home as a souvenir. This particularly applies to everything from coral, shells, plants and food in the natural world, to cultural artefacts and antiques.
If you’re unsure about anything relating to the above, please feel free to chat to us. We’ve travelled extensively in the country and will be more than happy to offer our considered advice.
We offer tailor-made holidays to suit a wide range of tastes. Our experts Erin and Ian are dedicated to all things Malaysia and are here to help you plan your perfect trip.
