A glittering metropolis, Kuala Lumpur (or KL as it is more fondly known) is the ideal starting point or end point of any Malaysian adventure. The quirky capital will draw you in with the historic temples, colonial architecture, soaring skyscrapers, acres of green city parks, bustling markets and shopping malls that could distract any fashionista for days.
Incredibly easy to navigate, and with the city centre itself relatively compact, you can stroll the streets from sight to sight, stopping to enjoy delicious hawker fare or hop on the monorail and zip around the city like a local. Major tourist highlights in Kuala Lumpur include Merdeka Square, Istana Budaya, Menara KL Tower, Chinatown, National Monument (Tugu Negara) and of course, the iconic Petronas Towers with an observation deck for taking in the beautiful KL skyline. Other sights we recommend include the Batu Caves to the north of the city, Aquaria KLCC if travelling with children and Central Market close to Petaling Street in Chinatown. The Perdana Botanical Gardens has a great Orchid Garden and quaint tearoom, or spend some time learning more about the history and culture of Malaysia at the National Museum.
For us, travel to KL is all about staying central and our top areas to achieve this are Bukit Bintang, KLCC and Chinatown. Bukit Bintang is right in the heart of KL and offers a huge mix of accommodation, as well as diverse dining options. Shopaholics will be in heaven here, as well as those looking for happening places to enjoy a drink day or night. Connected via a walkway from the Pavilion shopping centre, KLCC is another great hotel hot spot, especially if you fancy a room with a view of the Petronas Twin Towers. Nightlife here is a little classier, with some excellent rooftop bars, as well as very high end restaurants at some of the top hotels in the area. Bargain hunters may be better heading to Chinatown to enjoy the oriental vibes and the great value food and rooms. Several markets can be found here, as well as some lively watering holes and hip coffee shops.
