Lying in the heart of Jaipur at the end of a narrow lane is Samode Haveli, a 30-room heritage property that dates back more that 150 years. It’s home to intricate frescos, idyllic courtyards and leafy gardens. Each room is tastefully adorned and completely unique, with draping hand printed fabrics, crisp white bed sheets, antique furniture and lavish rugs. This combines beautifully with modern facilities and bathrooms and celebrates old and new seamlessly. All rooms vary in size and shape, it’s important to remember that this is not purpose built hotel and is suited to those who enjoy the quirks and history of such a building. Outside the fanciful pool area takes centre stage with lavish poolside pavilions, ideal for unwinding and escaping the Jaipur heat and bustle. Private cooking lesson with a local Rajput family

This traditional North Indian cookery demonstration takes place at Dera Mandawa, an upmarket homestay in the centre of Jaipur, famed for its cuisine. The lesson starts at around 6.30pm and takes approximately two hours, before sitting down to enjoy the food you have created with your welcoming hosts. Together with your guide you will visit the nearby traditional market, here your guide will explain different ingredients, including spices, that are commonly used in Indian cookery. Back at Dera Mandawa you will be shown how each dish is cooked and your hosts will describe the spices and ingredients used to prepare these tantalising dishes. While you wait for the food to cooking you will have the chance to chat to your educated and interested hosts and enjoy a drink.  Once the food is ready you will all sit down at the family dining table where you can all enjoy the fruits of your efforts. This is a wonderful way to learn more about Indian cookery but also gain an insight into family life in India.

Morning Cycling Experience (Jaipur)

A fun way to experience the old city of Jaipur is to go by bike. Accompanied by a local, ride through the narrow streets of the city passing through vintage Havelis, and several other architectural marvels. First, we have tea at a shop whose family has been preparing traditional Indian tea (called Chai) for the last three generations. Then head  to a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna and witness a Pooja ceremony. Watch the sellers setting up their flower and vegetable stalls as you wander around. Later find yourself sniffing the air full of freshly fried fritters at a famous shop in this part of town. Enjoy tea and fritters on a rooftop and admire the most planned old city of India. Riding the narrow streets you will see artisans sculpting the images of Hindu Deities. Conclude the tour by having Lassi (churned yogurt shake) without which your stay in Jaipur is incomplete.

Jaipur Food Tour

Jaipur has long been a city famed for trading; as a result communities from all over India and other parts of Asia have settled here.  Naturally the traders and settlers’ home cuisine has blended with the local food habits of Jaipur to what is now an intricate, characteristic and culinary haven, with many historical and cultural layers. This tour explores all these different elements and encourages guests to try and test the different food on offer. It explores the different communities, their behaviours and the different use of spices. It also seeks to explain more modern patterns of eating in Jaipur.  The tour begins from Sanganeri Gate, home to a large vegetable market that sits opposite to Hanuman Temple. This is the perfect place to gain an understanding of the enormous variety of fruits and vegetables used by people of Jaipur’s old city. The tour continues through the back streets, stopping at different street vendors and markets. Along the way you might like to try Namkeen walo ki gali (a mouth watring snack), Til ki Gajak (a sesame brittle sweet), Heeng Kachori (a snack served with mint sauce) and of course a local lassi.  This tour is designed for those with a real interest in Indian cuisine.
