Sailcone’s Grizzly Bear Lodge is located on Minstrel Island, within the remote waterways of Knight Inlet, an area known for its rich wildlife and dramatic coastal scenery. Surrounded by forested islands, sheltered channels and the wider expanse of Johnstone Strait, it’s an intimate and off-the-beaten-track base for exploring this part of British Columbia.
Access is via floatplane from Campbell River, with a short scenic flight bringing you directly into the heart of the wilderness. From there, the focus is on small group wildlife viewing, with daily guided excursions by boat, typically with just a handful of guests per outing, allowing for a more personal and flexible experience.
Stays are offered as two, three or four night all-inclusive packages, following a relaxed and adaptable structure shaped around wildlife activity. Days begin early, heading out onto the water to explore nearby inlets, estuaries and shorelines, with packed lunches enjoyed out in the field before returning to the lodge in the afternoon. Evenings are sociable and informal, with shared meals and time to unwind after a day out exploring.
The experience evolves through the season. In late spring and early summer, bear viewing is strong as grizzlies and black bears forage along estuary edges following hibernation. July offers consistent sightings by boat, along with excellent opportunities to see humpback whales and the arrival of orca. From late August into October, the focus shifts to peak bear viewing, with salmon runs drawing grizzlies inland, often viewed from platforms, alongside continued marine wildlife sightings.
The lodge itself is small and welcoming, accommodating a maximum of just eight guests. Rooms are simple but comfortable, with a mix of twin rooms, a small private cabin and a family room option, all with private bathrooms. The atmosphere is relaxed and personal, with meals served communally and a strong focus on fresh, locally inspired food.
With accommodation, meals, guiding, equipment and floatplane transfers included, it’s a highly personal and immersive way to experience the wildlife of the Great Bear Rainforest, ideal for those looking for a quieter, more intimate alternative to larger lodges.
