[content] => Kuching (meaning ‘Cat’ in Malay) is the laid back riverside capital of Sarawak and an ideal starting point for any Borneo adventure. It may be the largest city in Borneo but the clean streets, peaceful waterfront and friendly locals make it feel more like a small town. Even with the buzz of new cafes and trendy bars, as well as chic boutique hotels popping up around town, the charms of Kuching remain firmly in place.
With early roots as a trading post, Kuching was later built up by the family of Sir James Brooke. A number of museums are located around the city where you can learn more about Sarawaks vibrant history, with many housed in architectural masterpieces from the time of the White Rajahs. Other must do activities include a visit to the colourful weekend market, a stroll through the pristine waterfront, a sampan cruise along the Sarawak river and a taste of the spectacular food on offer throughout the city – a big highlight of any visit to Kuching.
Kuching is the ideal base to explore the state of Sarawak. Day tours are easy to arrange and the attractions are pretty unique; see the Rafflesia blooming in Gunung Gading, learn about Iban lifestyles in the longhouses at Batang Ai and come face to face with the rare Proboscis monkey in Bako National Park.

[title] => Kota Kinabalu
[oldid] => 6192
[alias] => kota-kinabalu
[id] => 56
[state] => 1
[content] => Facing the beautiful south China sea on the northwest coast of Borneo lies the capital of Sabah; Kota Kinabalu (or KK as it is more affectionately known). The city acts as the gateway to Tunku Abdul Raahman National Park and the majestic Mount Kinabalu, as well as an easy access point into the virgin jungles of southern Sabah. Visitors to Kota Kinabalu can enjoy a rich culinary spectrum, a lively arts and music scene, excellent shopping and a variety of easily accessible natural and cultural attractions within the city limits. By night explore the fabulous markets, including the Filipino night market set along the bustling waterfront.
The hotel selection is fairly limited with the best options being the larger chains or the iconic Jesselton Hotel, with smaller boutiques not an option here. Further from the city centre take time to relax on the beautiful beaches at the Shangri La Rasa Ria or head to Gaya Island for a slice of pure paradise to start or end your Borneo adventure – all within easy reach of the hubbub of Kota Kinabalu.

[title] => Gunung Mulu National Park
[oldid] => 6193
[alias] => gunung-mulu-national-park
[id] => 57
[state] => 1
[content] => Welcome to Mulu – Malaysia’s first World Heritage Area (awarded in 2000) and one of the most majestic and exciting nature destinations within Southeast Asia. Located in the middle of the Borneo jungle in the state of Sarawak, Gunung Mulu National Park is home to the worlds largest cave chamber and the longest cave in Southeast Asia. The enormous caves, mystical rock pinnacles, sandstone mountains and dense jungle make Mulu the perfect area for any keen explorer. The various trails can be explored on foot, including the beautiful Valley of Eden trek which follows in the foot-steps of Robin Hanbury-Tenison, the explorer who led Royal Geographical Society's Mulu expedition in 1977 - learn more about the expedition at the excellent Park HQ. Alternatively, adventure caving takes you deep into the caverns for those looking for the ultimate thrill.
The park’s main attractions are the four show caves (Wind, Clearwater, Deer and Langs Caves), all readily accessible by wooden walkways and paths. Other fascinating sights and activities include; a bat observatory; a 480m rainforest canopy skywalk (the world’s longest tree-based walkway); the challenging Mulu Summit climb, the spectacular Pinnacles trail, and the historic Headhunter’s trail through remote rainforest scenery.
The jungles are alive day and night so keep your eyes peeled and ears alert as bat encounters are common, as well as sightings of cave dwelling insects, snakes, lizards, frogs, butterflies and wild cats within the jungle.

[state] => 1
[content] => Flowing from the Crocker Range in Southwest Sabah to the Sulu Sea southeast of Sandakan, the majestic 560 kilometre Kinabatangan River is Sabah’s longest waterway and one of the top wildlife watching destinations in Southeast Asia. Passing through a diverse range of habitats including dipterocarp forest, seasonally flooded riparian forest, oxbow lakes, nipah and mangroves the lower level forests and mangroves around Sukau and Abai are the best spots to search out a remarkable diversity of wildlife; including proboscis monkeys, orangutan, gibbons, Bornean pygmy elephants, tarsiers, slow loris, macaque monkeys, crocodiles, freshwater sharks, Irrawaddy dolphins, hornbills and a variety of other birds.
Small villages are dotted along the river banks, home to the local Sabah natives, the Orang Sungai (the River People). Living peacefully alongside the local wildlife, visits can be made to the villages to learn about daily life and understand the rich indigenous culture of the area.
Whilst staying on the Kinabatangan you can search out wildlife on foot if your lodge has boardwalks surrounding the accommodation, or head out on the many cruises available. Running morning, noon and night these offer the best way to see the local residents with the help of the excellent nature guides in the area.

[title] => Batang Ai
[oldid] => 6195
[alias] => batang-ai
[id] => 59
[state] => 1
[content] => Sitting on the border with Kalimantan, Batang Ai is the site of the oldest Iban settlements in Sarawak. Best known for their reputation as headhunters (which has now died out), the Iban are Sarawak’s largest ethnic group. A hydro-electric scheme completed in 1980 dammed the Batang Ai river and created a 24 sq km lake fed by four tributaries of the Ai River. Many of the communities in Batang Ai were resulted but a few longhouses remained and these are now accessible by traditional longboat for a unique cultural interaction.
As well as being home to some of Borneo’s most oldest residents, Batang Ai National Park is also home to the original inhabitants; Sarawak’s Orangutans. With the highest orangutan population in central Borneo the park is a primate hot spot. Trek the mountainous landscapes of the park, stay in basic jungle camps and Iban villages and follow the tracks of Borneo’s endangered monkeys.
An ideal destination for a true Borneo adventure or a cultural immersion. Explore the clear rivers, refreshing waterfalls, verdant rainforest, diverse wildlife and vibrant culture of the Iban just 4 hours from the city of Kuching.

[title] => Danum Valley
[oldid] => 6196
[alias] => danum-valley
[id] => 60
[state] => 1
[content] => A naturalists’ paradise, Danum Valley Conservation Area is recognised as the worlds most complex ecosystems. A place where new species of birds and plants are still being discovered, it’s not hard to understand why Danum Valley is one of the most sought after rainforest escapes in Borneo.
Covering an area of 438 square kilometres of relatively undisturbed lowland dipterocarp forest, Danum Valley is home to endangered species such as banteng, Pygmy elephant, clouded leopard, as well as a vast range of Sabah’s lowland fauna. Dominated by dipterocarp tress, the canopy reaches heights of over 70 metres in some places, making it the perfect place to spot Orangutan swinging through the trees. Monitored closely by the conservation team, the wild Orangutan here (estimated to be at least 500) are one of the main draws. Learning about the important work being done to protect their environment and understand their behaviour is also a highlight of any Danum visit.
As well as the big jungle residents bird diversity is very high in Danum as more than 300 species of bird have been recorded, including the Bulwer's pheasant, seven species of pittas, the Borneo Bristlehead and all eight species of hornbill found in Borneo. In addition you can keep your eyes peeled for the rare Wallace Flying Frog, soft shelled turtles, skinks, vipers, a profusion of butterflies, such as the spectacular Rajah Brooke, and the cartoon like bay cats. Creepy critters and fascinating insects come out at night, the perfect time to explore the nature trails with your guide (and a good torch!).
Danum is a must visit in Borneo if budget allows but due to the delicate ecosystem it’s hard to gain access. No unauthorised visitors can access the park so day tours and self drives are not possible. Borneo Rainforest Lodge allows just 60 guests at any one time, all of whom must stay on site, making this an exclusive destination and one we cannot recommend highly enough.

[title] => Gaya Island
[oldid] => 6197
[alias] => gaya-island
[id] => 61
[state] => 1
[content] => The largest island within the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, Pulau Gaya is also the closest to the city of Kota Kinabalu and home to the best hotels within these emerald waters. Covered in dense virgin jungle, Gaya Island is fringed with palm clad beaches and is home to a number of bustling water villages built on stilts in the largest bays. Hidden within the tropical fauna on their own secret beaches lies the boutique luxury of our favourite hideaways; Gaya Island Resort, Bunga Raya and Gayana Marine.
The crystal clear waters off Gaya are excellent for snorkelling and diving. Donning a mask and fins and going under may lead to an exciting encounter with some of the famous local residents – the sea turtles, as well as blue ringed octopus, black tip reef shark and if here during November to February, the majestic whale sharks. With so much life below the waves, the island is also an important conservations site with the resorts home to their own Marine Centres where you can learn about the work being undertaken to recover the reefs.
Gaya Island makes the perfect base to relax, rejuvenate and reflect on an epic Borneo holiday, or simply wind down between stops along the way.

[title] => Tabin Wildlife Reserve
[oldid] => 6262
[alias] => tabin-wildlife-reserve
[id] => 62
[state] => 1
[content] => Created in the year 1984, Tabin has been declared a Wildlife Reserve primarily on account of the large number of animals inhabiting its forests, some of which are highly endangered. The reserve comprises a rectangular area of approximately 300,000 acres in the centre of the Dent Peninsula, north-east of Lahad Datu town, south of the lower reaches of the Segama River and north of the Silabukan Forest Reserve.
Some of the largest mammals of Sabah, namely Borneo Pygmy Elephant and Tembadau are found within the reserve; nine species of primate are present -including wild Orangutan, as well as three species of cats all of which are on the protected wildlife list. Of bird species, 42 families representing 300 species have been recorded. One of the highlights of Tabin are the active and mineral-rich mud volcanoes, attracting frequent visits by wildlife for their mineral intake and present an ideal platform for wildlife observation and bird-watching. Orangutan spotting chances are also high in Tabin as the reserve is the location for the release of rehabilitated primates from Sepilok.
Since the availability of accommodation provided by Tabin Wildlife Resort in 2004, Tabin Wildlife Reserve has gained popularity to be one of the best places in Sabah to observe the rich bio-diversity of nature and to part-take in nature-base activities. Amongst the popular things-to-do in Tabin are jungle-trekking, night safari, night walk, wildlife-spotting, bird-watching and rainforest education.

[title] => Sepilok & Sandakan
[oldid] => 6267
[alias] => sepilok-sandakan
[id] => 63
[state] => 1
[content] => Once serving as the capital of British North Borneo during the British colonial time, the historical city of Sandakan is now the gateway for eco-tourism destinations in Sabah such as the small town of Sepilok, the magical Turtle Islands, Sukau on the Kinabatangan River and the archaeological Gomantong Caves.
Arriving into Sandakan by air or overland visitors can explore religious relics and iconic temples, haunting cemeteries and stunning colonial buildings around the city. The colourful markets and fishing villages are great for a glimpse of local life, however most visitors will head straight to Sepilok for a wildlife discovery before heading deeper into Sabah or onwards to one of the many tropical islands off the coast.
Sepilok is famous as one of the world’s best orangutan viewing locations, home to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, with many of the residents taking time out in the local town and amongst the trees surrounding our favourite Sepilok lodgings. Nearby there is also the option to visit the excellent Sun Bear Conservation Centre, Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary where you will learn more about the vital part these creatures play in the ecosystem and the efforts made to protect them.

[content] => One of the most remote destinations in Sabah, Sapulot offers a chance to get far off the tourist trail and experience a place that appears forgotten by time. Close to the Kalimantan border, Batu Punggul is a sacred limestone outcrop offering some of the most incredible jungle views from the upper reaches. The deep jungle surrounds are teeming with wildlife and the perfect place to experience the Orou Sapulot eco-tourism project.
Founded by Murut Tribe descendent Richard Gunting, the Orou Sapulot project aims to bring the Murut communities of Sapulot together and protect local culture, provide sustainable income and conserve the flora and fauna from destructive activities. Orou Sapulot allows lucky visitors the chance to travel back in time to a simpler life where the only indulgence is mother nature. Don’t come here expecting anything more than this or you will be sorely disappointed.
A three day experience is perfect for keen naturalist and adventure seekers. Journey through scenic landscapes to Keningau and continue by 4x4 to transfer by river to Pungiton Eco Camp. Spend time walking through caves and swimming in the wild river before a night sleeping soundly to the noises of the jungle. Options for the following days include climbing the peaks of Batu Punggol, immersing yourself in local life at a Muru longhouse or trekking the dense jungle to Vangkaakon waterfalls. Evenings will be spent in basic lodgings or camping under the stars, feasting on traditional Muru food and rice wine, as well as enjoying traditional dance and music with your Murut hosts.

Tucked between Malaysia and the northern islands of Indonesia, you’ll find one of the most magnificent places on earth, the Eden of Borneo. Spanning an area that is almost 745,000 hectares in size and straddling the equator, Borneo is the third-largest island in the world. Divided into the states of Sabah and Sarawak under Malaysia, Kalimantan under Indonesia, and the oil-rich country of Brunei in the north, its culture is as varied as its wildlife.
Borneo's spectacular rainforests are teeming with life. With everything from the endemic proboscis monkey and the rare orangutan, to the critically endangered Sumatran rhino. Hidden away under the towering canopy of ancient trees live an array of unique animals capable of soaring from tree to tree, including flying dragon lizards, giant red flying squirrels and shy flying lemurs. Closer to the buttresses within the jungle undergrowth, you may be lucky enough to spot mouse deer, bearded pigs, clouded leopards, the Bornean bay cat, otter civets or the largest of the ground dwellers, the pygmy elephant.
From the soaring peak of Mt Kinabalu at 13000ft high to the vast caverns deep within the Mulu National Park, the landscapes of Borneo are as remarkable as the wildlife that call them home. It’s a hugely popular destination for adventure travellers, wildlife lovers and eco travellers alike. And for honeymooners looking for a private slice of paradise, Borneo has plenty of wow factor. Families are also well catered for, with easy wildlife viewing at the excellent rehabilitation and conservation centres, and pristine tropical islands dotted off the mainland, perfect for family beach fun. For a real experience of cultural immersion, overnight stays can be arranged at the traditional longhouse dwellings of Borneo’s feared headhunters, the Iban tribes. This unique mix of cultures, religions, languages and cuisines is easily accessible for visitors to explore on any tour to Borneo, and we’re here to help you do just that.
Borneo is the perfect place to travel all year round, thanks to its tropical climate. Temperatures fall between 27 and 32 °C on average, with a humidity of around 80%. Rain is possible every day throughout the year, but don’t let that put you off. November to February marks the so-called “wet season”, but this mainly affects boat links to offshore islands or visibility for divers. It’s also worth noting that during the winter months, wildlife viewing in deeper Sabah can be tricky due to the torrential rains, as the wildlife seeks shelter and can be harder to spot.
The best time to visit Borneo is from May to September, when the days are warm and dry and the sun is often shining. It is peak season, though, so you’ll need to book well in advance, to get in ahead of the common accommodation shortages.
The best time to visit Peninsular Malaysia is between March and October, when travel throughout the region is at its best. Travelling during January and February, although somewhat wet, is very rewarding due to the significant festivals that take place every year, including Chinese New Year and Thaipusam.
Malaysian Food
Along with the multicultural Malay cuisine found throughout the peninsula, the foods you’ll devour on your journey through Sabah or Sarawak are influenced by the delicious indigenous fare using ingredients found in the wild rainforests. Each tribe has different ways of seasoning, cooking and preparing the fruits of the forest, meaning a food tour around Borneo never gets repetitive. A firm favourite (especially around a jungle campfire) is Bamboo Chicken – chicken, rice and spices sealed in a length of bamboo and cooked near an open fire. Delicious. Rice and noodles are staples for most meals, and you won’t have to go far to find a nasi goreng, laksa or sambal.
A few typical dishes we recommend trying during your travels include nasi lemak, nasi goreng, wan tan mee, marmite chicken, sateh, carrot cake, dimsum and beef rendang. Or if you fancy something a little more adventurous then keep an eye out for these dishes; Siat or Butod – stir fried sago grubs (a popular protein source in Sabah) or Tuhau (found in interior Sabah) – not a dish but a wild ginger that you will either be a lover of, or a hater of… we’d love to hear your verdict when you’re home!
Turning to something a little sweeter, Malaysians love the sweet stuff and you’ll find just as many dessert shops, bakeries, candy stores and cake shops as you will local restaurants and food courts. Sweets, known as Kuih, incorporate coconut and palm sugar, combined with sweet and savoury flavours and are seriously delicious. Or, if you’re looking for something a little more familiar, then you won’t have to look far to find waffles, pancakes, ice cream or cakes.
Drink
Although many people think Malaysia is a dry country, this is certainly not true, and alcohol is available throughout most states easily and cheaply. However, tourists heading to the East of the country should be prepared that prices may be inflated within the resorts. Outside of hotels, alcohol can be a little tougher to find, so you might want to pick up a supply as you head through duty-free. Away from alcohol, there are plenty of local Malay drinks to quench your thirst with; Teh Tarik – Malaysian pulled tea, barley juice, white coffee, longan juice, or an English-inspired tea from the central plantations are all worth a try.
There are no direct flights into Borneo, but you can fly direct to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with British Airways or Malaysian Airlines and hop on a connecting flight. Or, fly direct to Singapore with Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Qantas, Norwegian Air or Virgin Atlantic and simply travel over the border. There are plenty of options to break up the journey and make it as convenient as possible for you, chat to us and we’ll help find the best option for you. For example, you might like to add on a city or beach break in Thailand or Dubai, or a city break in Singapore or Hong Kong.
A host of other airlines, European and Middle Eastern, fly to South-East Asia via their respective hubs, but it’s rare for these to be cheaper or more convenient. However, some do offer more options for those travelling from regional UK airports. We always price up our flight options on a case-by-case basis, making sure we find the best available deals for your trip. If you have any particular preferences for airlines or routes, or are considering upgrading your flights, please let us know so we can include this in your holiday plans.
British nationals don’t need a visa to visit Malaysian Borneo and will normally be given permission to stay for 3 months on arrival. Visas for longer stays or for non-tourist purposes must be obtained from the nearest Malaysian diplomatic mission before you travel. For other passport holders, please do check with your passport office for entry requirements.
To enter Malaysian Borneo, your passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the date of departure from Malaysia.
We recommend packing plenty of comfortable, lightweight clothing in natural fabrics such as cotton for your travels in Malaysia and Borneo. The dress code is fairly casual, as in most parts of the tropics, but it’s advisable to cover arms and legs in the evenings to protect yourself against biting insects. A lightweight raincoat and umbrella are a good idea in the rainy season, and an umbrella can also double up as a useful shade from the sun. You’ll want some warm clothing options when visiting the Cameron Highlands, where temperatures can drop considerably thanks to the higher altitude.
Wearing shorts, short skirts, or other revealing clothing isn’t permitted when visiting religious sites. We also recommend that ladies carry a scarf in case they wish to visit a mosque.
For travel to Borneo, you’ll need to pack trekking boots or sturdy footwear as well as additional equipment, depending on the activities you have planned.
Borneo is an extremely welcoming country; it really is such a pleasure to explore. The locals are extremely friendly, but it’s worth being aware of some simple things… Smile a lot, remove shoes before visiting a local home, use your left hand to accept objects, ask permission to take photos, don’t kiss in public or sunbathe nude and don’t ever raise your voice – getting visibly angry with people will prove to be totally counter-productive. If you have a problem, remain calm and become increasingly polite, and you will be helped.
As we’re not medical experts, we feel it’s essential you contact your GP regarding vaccinations and other medical requirements for travel to Malaysian Borneo. In addition to such vaccinations as you’d routinely have for living in the UK, further boosters are recommended for Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Polio and Tetanus. If you have visited a country where Yellow Fever is endemic, you will need a certificate of vaccination.
Do talk to your GP first, but it’s worth also drawing your attention to this useful website: traveldoctor.co.uk – an interactive website providing specialist health information for travellers, plus customised lists of travel medicines, vaccines for holidaymakers, global adventure travellers and expeditions.
Malaria is present in pockets of deep hinterland areas of Sabah and Sarawak, and a central area of Peninsular Malaysia. There is low to no risk in Kuala Lumpur, other urban and suburban areas and along the coast.
We believe travel should be a force for good. That means exploring with open eyes, treading lightly, and respecting the people and places that make the world so special. Our code of conduct isn’t about rules, it’s simply a guide to help you travel thoughtfully, ethically, and with care. Because every small choice makes a big difference.
If you choose to trust us with your holiday, we’ll send you a “Travel Facts” document when confirming your booking. This includes useful facts and travel advice, such as restaurant recommendations, reading tips, basic language information, cultural traditions, climate information, brief historical overviews, and more. We feel that this offers a useful insight and can help you interact with local residents in a more sensitive, well-informed manner. Please do try to take the time to read this information before your visit, it’s worth the time!
A number of the countries in which we operate holidays are religious societies with a widely observed set of customs. Always respect these norms, particularly when visiting religious buildings.
To the best of our knowledge, all hotels, lodges, and camps within our portfolio operate stringent measures to minimise water usage. All of our destinations have issues with water supplies to a certain extent, so feel free to raise any possible wastage should you encounter it during your stay, either with the accommodation or with us upon your return.
Please ask permission before taking photographs of people, and respect their wishes if they are not happy to be photographed. We find that friendly requests and a smile are usually met with a ‘yes!’
Strive, where possible, to make your own contribution to environmental practices as you travel. This might include minimising your electricity usage, not smoking in protected areas, avoiding coral while snorkelling, and safely disposing of all litter (recycling where possible).
Where possible, try to purchase from local suppliers. This includes shopping for souvenirs, dining out at restaurants, and booking additional excursions during your free time. In areas where haggling is an accepted part of daily life, don’t be offended if you’re unable to obtain what you perceive as a fair price for an item.
We emphasise to local suppliers that our clients should never be taken on unsolicited shopping trips, but if this does happen, try to retain your sense of humour, provide a firm refusal to participate and do let us know about it on your return. We pass on all feedback from every trip undertaken with us to our relevant local suppliers, who all share our commitment to travelling with sensitivity.
Please don’t remove any indigenous items from their natural habitat and attempt to bring them home as a souvenir. This particularly applies to everything from coral, shells, plants and food in the natural world, to cultural artefacts and antiques.
If you’re unsure about anything relating to the above, please feel free to chat to us. Our experts have travelled extensively in the country and will be more than happy to offer their considered advice.
We offer tailor-made holidays to suit a wide range of tastes. Our experts Erin and Ian are dedicated to all things Borneo and are here to help you plan your perfect trip.
