Your tailor-made holiday will be as unique as you are. These itineraries are just a starting point, a bit of inspiration to show what’s possible. Your own trip all starts with a conversation with one of our Sri Lanka experts, who’ll take the time to understand what matters most to you and design the perfect holiday to match.
Perfect for history & culture enthusiasts and beach lovers, this 12-day adventure explores five UNESCO World Heritage sites, an unspoiled Sri Lankan beach and a charming fishing town. This trip starts in Negombo, with its Dutch canals and fish markets, before coming inland to Kandy, a gloriously verdant area home to the famous Temple of the Tooth. Continue to the ‘Cultural Triangle’ area, home to many of Sri Lanka’s ancient cities. Here you’ll find remnants of ancient civilisations atop giant rocks, temples buried within caves, and even roaming wild elephants. The trip comes to an end on Sri Lanka’s northwest coast, an untouched region famed for its beaches, kitesurfing and whale watching. If you love uncovering history but want some time to relax in between exploring, this Sri Lanka holiday idea is for you.
Here's a summary of what you might get up to day-to-day on this Sri Lanka holiday. As always, this is just an idea. Every single day of your trip will be tailored to suit you.
Your adventure begins with an overnight flight to Colombo this evening. Sit back, relax and watch a film or two as you head towards the teardrop tropical island of Sri Lanka.
After touching down in Colombo, you’ll be met by your private chauffeur-guide with a warm welcome and a massive smile, who’ll whisk you straight off to Negombo, a lively fishing town just 20 minutes from the airport. Spend the afternoon settling into your hotel, taking a stroll along the beach, or exploring the network of Dutch canals that once served as colonial trade routes. If you’re feeling adventurous, a sunset boat ride offers a peaceful and beautiful introduction to Sri Lanka’s coastal beauty.
This morning, dive straight into the sights, sounds, and smells of Negombo’s traditional fish market. It’s a chaotic, slightly smelly, but fascinating experience. Watch fishermen auctioning off the catch of the day, drying fish under the sun, and skillfully filleting tuna at lightning speed. Later, take a boat safari along Hamilton Canal, a mangrove-fringed waterway where you’ll float amongst local life, spotting colourful birdlife and monkeys as you go. The afternoon is yours to relax, perhaps with a fresh seafood feast by the beach.
Today, your chauffeur-guide will drive you three hours inland to Kandy, Sri Lanka’s cultural capital. Tucked away between rolling green hills, Kandy is vibrant, atmospheric, and full of history. This evening, visit the Temple of the Tooth, one of Buddhism’s most sacred pilgrimage sites, where a Puja ceremony takes place each night, filling the temple with chanting, drumming, and the scent of incense.
You'll head off on a guided tour this morning, exploring Kandy’s streets and local markets, before heading to the Royal Botanical Gardens to see one of the world’s best orchid displays. The gardens were once reserved for Sri Lankan royalty, but today you’re free to wander through the majestic avenues of towering palms, giant fig trees, and fragrant spice gardens.
Today, you’ll head north with your driver to Sigiriya, stopping en route at the Golden Temple of Dambulla, a UNESCO-listed cave complex filled with ancient murals and more than 150 Buddha statues. The site has been a place of worship for over 2,000 years, and the caves themselves are set within a towering rock formation with panoramic views. By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Sigiriya and check into your hotel, ready for tomorrow’s climb.
This morning, climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress, one of Sri Lanka’s most famous and photogenic sites. The climb takes around 45 minutes to an hour, passing through giant lion paws, ancient frescoes, and the ruins of a royal palace. After taking in the seemingly endless views over the jungle from the top, head to Polonnaruwa, another UNESCO World Heritage site, where you’ll explore the well-preserved ruins of an ancient capital, from stupas and temples to stone-carved Buddha statues.
The culture continues in full force today with a visit to Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka’s greatest ancient capitals. Famous for its massive brick stupas, sacred temples, and sprawling ruins, it’s an impressive place to explore with your guide for a few hours. You’ll also visit Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, said to be the oldest recorded tree in the world, grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
After days of temple-hopping and history, it’s time to slow down and soak up the Sri Lankan sunshine. A three-hour drive takes you to Kalpitiya, a peaceful coastal town with untouched beaches. We recommend Kalpitiya for kitesurfing, dolphin watching boat trips and rustic accommodation, or Chilaw and Waikkal for more comfortable properties and quiet beaches.
Your final days in Sri Lanka are all about relaxation and adventure. If you’re visiting between November and April, take a dolphin-watching boat trip, where you can see hundreds of dolphins leaping through the waves. If you’re feeling active, kite surfing is hugely popular here, with steady winds and perfect conditions for both beginners and pros. Or, simply kick back on the beach with a good book, swimming in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and sipping on a fresh king coconut.
After one last Sri Lankan breakfast by the ocean, your guide will drive you to the airport for your return flight home. Your adventure, packed with cultures and coastline, may have come to an end, but we have a sneaking suspicion that this won’t be your last visit to the teardrop Island.
