Your tailor-made holiday will be as unique as you are. These itineraries are just a starting point – a bit of inspiration to show what’s possible. Your own trip all starts with a conversation with one of our Japan experts, who’ll take the time to understand what matters most to you and design the perfect Japan holiday to match.
For all its high-tech glitz, Japan is very much a traditional nation. It’s steeped in history and overflowing with quaint communities and ancient monuments. This trip will take you on a journey through the mountains of the Japanese Alps, on a scenic circle through some of our all-time favourite places. Check out magnificent castles, wander through charming towns and villages, sip delicious green tea, and enjoy some of the prettiest places that Japan has to offer.
This Japan holiday idea is all about getting you to the heart and soul of the country. It’s about soaking up traditions, staying in simple surroundings, exploring ancient streets, and stepping back into the Japan of yesteryear. Yes, there’s a place for robots, neon lights and Godzilla. Day by Day
Here's a summary of what you might get up to day-to-day on this Japan holiday. As always, this is just an idea. Every single day of your holiday will be tailored to suit you.

It’s time to head to the airport to begin your big adventure. Check in your bags, check in yourselves, and hop on the plane for a bit of R&R before landing in Tokyo. Direct flights are available from London, but there are plenty of great indirect choices from regional airports too. If you’d like us to sort your flights for you, just chat to us about where’s the most convenient airport for you.
Your adventure starts in the incredible city of Tokyo. When you land, you’ll be greeted at the airport by our friendly team on the ground, who will make sure you have all of the information and documents needed for your journey ahead. Once you make your way to your hotel, the rest of the day is yours to relax or get your bearings around the city at your own pace. There's a lot of New World influence everywhere you look here, but there are plenty of ancient, soulful treasures to be uncovered, too – you won't need to look hard.
This morning, you’ll head off with your own private local guide to explore some of Tokyo’s greatest sights. We can fully customise your half day tour today to make sure the activities and attractions visited are the perfect fit for you and your interests. It’s a big city, with an almost overwhelming amount to see, so, as always, just chat to us about what’s important to you and we’ll make it happen. For something a little different, our recommendation is an in-depth exploration of Asakusa, the historical heart of Tokyo. Get a hands-on look at the traditional craft of Edo Kiriko glass-cutting, visit some unique temples and shrines, and witness everyday life in this megacity for yourself.
Today you’ll get your very first chance to marvel at the punctuality and comfort of Japanese trains as you ride the bullet train from Tokyo to the city of Kanazawa, an all-too-often skipped destination. Known as ‘Little Kyoto’, we know it’s a cliche, but this city really does qualify for the title of ‘hidden gem’. With an incredible food scene, well-preserved historical districts, and a wealth of artisan shops and art galleries, this city will surprise you in all the best ways.
Meet your private tour guide this morning for a full day of exploring Kanazawa’s most famous sights. Begin with Kenrokuen, one of the most loved gardens in all of Japan. A landscape full of ponds, lanterns, bridges and trees – it is beyond peaceful! A few hours here will be the perfect antidote to the bustle of modern Japan. Next, head to Omicho market for a filling lunch. This afternoon, wander through the cobblestone streets and wooden neighbourhoods for some Kanazawa history, and to learn more about the city’s celebrated crafts. The lacquerware and gold-leaf work are particularly fascinating!
Today, you’ll head off on a journey to Takayama – your new favourite destination. Famed for its clear waters, hot springs and delicious sake rice wine, this is one of Japan’s most beautiful spots. On the way, you’ll stop off at the impossibly picturesque village of Shirakawago, where you’ll feel like you’ve landed straight in a living postcard. Take a few hours to amble around and soak up the mountain air before continuing on your way. Tonight, in Takayama, stay in a ryokan (traditional inn) for some famed Japanese hospitality, complete with futon beds, and a vast evening meal you will struggle to finish.
Wake up today with a wonderfully slow-paced day ahead of you. Nothing is planned, but we have plenty of suggestions if you would like direction. Why not explore the fields and villages surrounding Takayama by bike, soaking up the charm and magic of everyday life unfolding before your eyes? Or raid the morning markets to try some seasonal treat, and delicious street food? Most importantly, don’t miss the chance to soak in the onsen (hot springs) at your accommodation. It’s such a staple Japanese experience, and one not to be missed.
Your journey continues by train today, where you’ll find yourself in Japan’s most-visited city, Kyoto! With a wealth of attractions to visit, the hardest part is picking where you want to go. After checking into your hotel, we highly recommend an evening stroll around the streets of the Gion neighbourhood. This ancient district has retained a lot of old-world charm, and is lined with ancient tea houses, where geiko (geisha) still work and live. It’s also a great place to try some tasty local food, in one of the most atmospheric parts of the city. For something a little less known to the tourist crowds though, do ask us for some other suggestions!
Today starts bright and early with a half-day private guided tour of the city. With 2000 shrines and temples to choose from, it is easy to veer away from the tour groups… but some of the ‘must-see’ sights really are worth braving the crowds for. We can discuss our preferred itineraries with you, but do let us know if there are any key sights you were keen to explore with an expert guide. The afternoon is free to spend as you choose, and we can assist you in maximising your time (or, for some flexibility, use our Self Guide mobile phone app for inspiration).
A truly magical experience awaits you today – learning the secrets of Japan’s famous tea ceremony, from the intimate setting of a Zen temple. Nothing speaks to the soul of Japan more than the relationship between Buddhism and tea, with the ancient city of Kyoto being the ideal place to explore this ritual further. You will watch as matcha tea is prepared in a meditative manner, learning the importance of every detail, to understand how this fits into the lives and activities of Zen monks in Japan. After bidding your hosts farewell, the rest of the day is yours to explore Kyoto one last time.
After a few hours and scenic train travel through the countryside, you’ll arrive at your next destination, Matsumoto, ready to take in the sights of this slightly slower-paced city. The key sight to see is one you simply can’t miss: the towering Matsumoto Castle that stands proud in the centre of town. Once you’ve visited the castle, the surrounding streets have plenty of quirky shops and interesting museums to explore, too.
Nothing is planned today, but we would recommend heading out to one of the charming towns in the Kiso Valley - reached by local trains from Matsumoto, and easy to explore independently. We will arrange a visit to one of the famous 'post towns' of the old Nakasendo Way, such as Tsumago, Magome, or Narai, depending on your preferences. These towns appear to be frozen in time, looking much like they did hundreds of years ago when they were stops along the road from Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto, where travellers would rest their heads for the night. There are even options for you to walk in their footsteps, between various stops, for a beautiful hike in this alpine region.
One last journey by rail today as you head back to the capital. You have one more night in the country before your adventure comes to an end, so we know you’ll want to make the most of every second. We can suggest different area of the city to explore, or help you organise further sightseeing… or just point you in the right direction for places to dine before you depart. Whichever option you choose, you can rest assured that your last day in Japan will be a memorable one.
Today, you'll say goodbye to Japan and all of the traditions and soul that make it such a special place. Until next time, Japan.

“
A highly knowledgeable and professional company that looks after you and your particular needs from beginning to end. Japan was my third trip through them and their team in the office, Fenton in particular, their local guides and their on the ground back up staff were brilliant. Faultless is the one word that springs to mind and I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Just back from an amazing time in Japan. Fenton looked after us brilliantly during the initial discussions, all the way to checking-in once we were back to see if there were things that could have been improved. The key thing for us was that Fenton listened to us, and asked about the things that interested us and would make the holiday special. He was able to use his experience and knowledge to guide us - including tweaking some of our initial ideas that would not have worked. Then he crafted an itinerary that really delivered on the promises. Proper small business service levels - highly recommend.

We recently returned from an incredible trip to Japan, arranged by Holiday Architects, and we couldn’t be happier with the experience. From the start, Fenton was attentive and professional, sharing his personal experience and expertise about Japan. He took the time to understand what we wanted from our trip – combining cultural experiences, visits to historic buildings and serene gardens, and the excitement of bustling city life – and created a tailored itinerary that suited us perfectly.

I booked a holiday of a lifetime for myself and my daughter to Japan. Fenton at Holiday Architects organised everything to the finest detail. When we arrived in Tokyo, we were met by someone who had all our tickets prepared with full instructions on how to use them, where and when. Each hotel was chosen with us in mind, each within the vicinity of the main sights. Guided tours showed us the culture of Japan and its history. Fenton has great knowledge of the country, if you don’t. He can advise. Thank you Fenton!

I could not have planned such a memorable adventure to Japan with my 19 year old son without Emma’s extensive and invaluable knowledge. She really listened to my brief, with the end result that we had a trip of a lifetime. We felt we were experiencing Race Across the World but in a good way and armed with all the information we needed. The App was brilliant which detailed our itinerary day by day including train times and local information. Excellent.
