The Cerro de la Muerte is the highest peak along the Pan American highway in Costa Rica, at an altitude of 3451 metres. Its rather intimidating name ('Hill of Death') comes from the era before the highway was built, where many people forced to travel along this route perished when weather conditions were at their harshest. Your tour will begin with a drive to the higher elevations of the Cerro, and you will begin a 10 kilometre descent, accompanied by your guide and enjoying some superb views. Along the way your guide may also point out some of the interesting flora and birds that can be seen in the region, so you may wish to bring binoculars if you have them. Tour duration is approximately six hours, and an entrance fee to the Savegre reserve is payable locally. This tour is only recommended for those in reasonable physical fitness.
