Rustic Trogon Lodge is a wonderfully peaceful place to stay in San Gerardo de Dota. Guest accommodation is semi-detached cabins dotted around the beautiful grounds – rooms are on the simple side but benefit from private bathrooms, heating and a small porch with rocking chairs. The lodge has two nature trails which can be explored independently or with a guide, and are great for bird watching. Meal service at the on-site restaurant finishes up relatively early in the evening but there is a cosy on-site bar with jukebox, WiFi and board games.

Cerro de la Muerte hike

The Cerro de la Muerte is the highest peak along the Pan American highway in Costa Rica, at an altitude of 3451 metres. Its rather intimidating name ('Hill of Death') comes from the era before the highway was built, where many people forced to travel along this route perished when weather conditions were at their harshest. Your tour will begin with a drive to the higher elevations of the Cerro, and you will begin a 10 kilometre descent, accompanied by your guide and enjoying some superb views. Along the way your guide may also point out some of the interesting flora and birds that can be seen in the region, so you may wish to bring binoculars if you have them. Tour duration is approximately six hours, and an entrance fee to the Savegre reserve is payable locally. This tour is only recommended for those in reasonable physical fitness.

Quetzal tour

An early start this morning as you set out with your expert guide on a tour with the sole focus of seeing the Resplendent Quetzal in its natural habitat. These beautiful turquoise and red birds reside in San Gerardo year-round, but the best places to see them will depend on the season – you may therefore be departing on foot and exploring the immediate vicinity of your lodge, or take a short drive to a nearby location. You will return to your lodge in time for breakfast, and total tour duration is approximately two hours.

Excursion

Horse riding & waterfall hike

Depart with your guide on horse-back on a pleasant four-kilometre route down the San Gerardo valley. You will then tether the horses and begin a one hour hike to a beautiful waterfall. You will have ample time to recover and enjoy the scenery before re-tracing your steps back to your lodge. Tour duration is approximately three and a half hours and some experience of horse riding is preferred.

San Gerardo birdwatching

You will set out with your guide on a two-hour tour in search of some of the 170 recorded species of bird that can be found in San Gerardo’s tropical cloud forests. Amongst those you may spot are the long-tailed silky flycatcher, the Flame-coloured tanager, the Emerald toucanet, the Collared redstart and seven species of hummingbird. You may take some of the journey by vehicle or entirely on foot, depending on the season and the best recent sightings.
