Located on apalm island at the base of the 'Panhandle'where the Okavango River begins to fan out into theDelta, Setari Campoffers a wetland experience unlike almost any other camp. This is an area of deep-water channels where the focus is on the aquatic environment and magnificent landscape. A true 'wet' camp where activities focus on boat cruises and mokoro trips with fishing and guided walks also on offer as well as visits to the nearbyJaovillage for those interested in learning more about the local culture. The area is a birders paradise, boasting a huge number of migrant birds, aquatic birds, raptors, a seasonal heronry and to top it all, the hauntingly beautiful Pels Fishing Owl.

The camp resemblesan enormous tree-house where the entire construction is elevated and with wooden walkways linking the impressive sitting and dining areas, pool-with-a-view, gym and curio shop. There are eight spacious tents and one family suite interlinked by these winding walkways through the trees each with a private deck with views over the Delta.

Helicopter the Delta

Since most Delta concessions require you to fly-in by light aircraft, there is little doubt that you will get the chance to view this remarkable tableau of waterways, tree islands and expansive floodplains from the sky, with sensational panoramic vistas that you are unlikely to forget. For real airborne enthusiasts there is the chance to book a helicopter flight, which might last for longer than an inter-reserve transfer and will provide more scope for focusing on specific landscapes and wildlife. Your pilot can also swoop and soar to various altitudes throughout the flight, which is not possible in the same way on a light aircraft transfer that is merely intended to take passengers from A to B. The larger wildlife such as elephants, giraffe and hippo are certainly identifiable from the skies, even when travelling solo, while the large herds of buffalo, zebra and antelope take on a new grandeur from on high. Guests booking this experience will usually get around 45 minutes in the air, with &Beyond's Xudum and Xaranna camps among those that can offer this activity for guests.

Abu Elephant Programme

Stays at Abu Camp offer an utterly unique opportunity to interact closely with African elephants in their natural habitat. Abu has a resident elephant herd that stays within an enclosure overnight but are integrally involved in activities during the day. Guests at camp meet the herd soon after arrival and will learn all about their behaviour, conservation issues and the history of the Abu project from on-site experts over the course of their stay. Activities with the playful pachyderms include elephant back safaris into the bush, where other animals will be unaware of human presence and allow the elephants to get incredibly close. Guests can also walk alongside the elephants as they make their imperious way through the woodland and plains of the concession. Other possibilities include the chance to bathe, train and administer veterinary care to the elephants and search for some of the individuals who have successfully been reintroduced to the wild with GPS collars, the very raison d'etre of the whole operation. A stay at Abu doesn't come cheaply, but it is an utterly unforgettable experience that is also ideal for families and younger guests.

Walking Safaris (Okavango Delta)

Walking safaris are offered from virtually all of the camps within private Delta concessions, at least at times of the year when water levels are favourable. While some are necessarily relatively short strolls in areas close to camps largely encircled by water, others are exceptional. Botswana’s safari guides are renowned, and the walking safaris have a reputation arguably second only to Zambia’s. Walks will tend to be conducted with a specialist guide and an armed scout, walking at either side of a single-file train, should the close encounters with big game become a little too close for comfort! The best walks are a detailed, intimate exploration of the bush: the alarm calls of the various antelope as you approach; the scat and tracks of each animal, which you will be something of an expert in by the end of your stay; the unique smells that suddenly become prevalent as you cross a dry riverbed and encounter a potato bush or wild lavender; and the unmatched, goosebump inducing thrill of realising that you are suddenly close to elephant, lion or buffalo on foot, utterly reliant on the wits and expertise of others. One of the best walking options is Ker & Downey’s Footsteps programme, but there are many other camps or mobile programmes that can offer you genuine excitement on foot!

Mokoro Excursions

A mokoro is essentially a dugout canoe, traditionally carved from indigenous tree sources but now more likely to be a sturdier affair constructed from fibre glass. The narrow channels of the Delta, with their decorative papyrus, reeds and water lilies, are tailor made for travelling by mokoro, which was historically the most practical way for people to traverse such wetland areas. Today a mokoro excursion from a Delta camp is a relaxing affair with no exertion required, generally involving a maximum of two passengers per mokoro and one poler, who propels the vessel in much the same way you would punt on a still river. This is not a guaranteed big game viewing excursion, although you will come across plenty of hippo, water birds and some swamp based antelope such as red lechwe and puku. It is more about experiencing the pristine beauty and serenity of the waterways, with more time to notice the little things such as verdant flora, birdsong and tiny amphibians and insects. Not all of the camps can operate mokoro excursions, particularly in dry concessions when water levels are low, but during high water camps such as Kanana, Jao and Xaranna are perfectly situated for the best mokoro trips anywhere on the continent.
