Hotel overview

The delightful Entre Hielos Lodge is nestled high upon a steep mountainside in the remote town of Tortel, two full days drive from the closest airport in Balmaceda. Sandwiched between the northern and southern ice fields, this isolated, magical town is constructed upon wooden walkways and staircases that cling to the fjord mountainside. Access by car is impossible and is limited to the car parking area in the north of the town, with the final ten minutes of the journey to be completed on foot. Entre Hielos Lodge consists of just five comfortable and cosy rooms, each with a private bathroom, central heating and exceptionally comfortable beds with feather down furnishings.

El Tatio Geysers

You’ll need an early start for your excursion to El Tatio Geysers, which are located a couple of hour's drive from San Pedro de Atacama. These geothermal fields include more than eighty active geysers, with vapour columns spurting from the pools that can reach a dizzying height of up to 12 metres. Enjoy breakfast on site at dawn, before returning to your hotel for lunch. On the return journey, look out for local wildlife including vicunas, foxes and Andean ostriches. This excursion lasts between five and six hours, including transfers and a breakfast enroute, due to the early start. The area is located 4300 metres above sea level.

Capilla de Marmol (Marble Caves)

Today you'll see the sculpted geological formations of the Marble Caves, which are an undisputed highlight of the Carretera Austral. Located on the vast Lago General Carrera Lake, these bright blue and grey caves have been formed by over 6000 years of erosion and are truly mesmerising. This excursion involves taking a boat trip from the tiny dock at Puerto Tranquilo, although if you'd prefer you can even visit by kayak to get a different perspective of the swirling patterns inside the caves.

La Confluencia (Baker & Neff River Confluence)

La Confluencia marks the spot where the electric blue waters of the mighty River Baker collide with the milkier, glacial-fed River Neff. The roaring power of the river confluence is a mesmerising sight, located just 12 kilometres south from Puerto Bertrand. Once you see the roadside sign, leave your car and pass through a small wooden stile, before continuing the final 800 meters to the river on foot to the confluence.
