Vina Principal

The spectacular Vina Principal sets itself apart from other wine producers in the Maipo Valley, thanks to their truly exceptional tours. The rolling hillsides of this boutique vineyard are postcard perfect and the winery prides itself on providing a much more authentic experience than that of the larger vineyards in the area. Here, you can learn about every aspect of the wine-making process: from the meticulous grape selection through to the lengthy fermentation and ageing processes. The 90-minute tour allows you to see the working operation, before sampling some of the finest wines produced in Chile.

Winelands: Maipo, Casablanca & Colchagua Valleys

The attractive Maipo, Casablanca and Colchagua Valleys are some of Chile’s most important wine producing regions. Head out for a half or full day tour to get first-hand experience of the regions. Tours range from private tastings at family-run boutique vineyards through to multiple stop itineraries, including some of the larger scale operations and sprawling wine estates. Key attributes of the region allow for production of quality wines at a reasonable cost, such as the year-round sun, low humidity and volcanic dry soil. These qualities lead to stronger vines, deeper flavours and fewer pests. The Maipo Valley is less than an hour east of Santiago, making the region the closest and most convenient stop to sample some of Chile’s full-bodied reds and crisp whites. One of the world-famous brands in the Maipo Valley is Concha Y Toro, which makes frequent appearances on shelves throughout the United Kingdom.

El Tatio Geysers

You’ll need an early start for your excursion to El Tatio Geysers, which are located a couple of hour's drive from San Pedro de Atacama. These geothermal fields include more than eighty active geysers, with vapour columns spurting from the pools that can reach a dizzying height of up to 12 metres. Enjoy breakfast on site at dawn, before returning to your hotel for lunch. On the return journey, look out for local wildlife including vicunas, foxes and Andean ostriches. This excursion lasts between five and six hours, including transfers and a breakfast enroute, due to the early start. The area is located 4300 metres above sea level.

Vik Vineyard

A sensational fusion of Norwegian and Chilean design, the futuristic Vik winery is as remarkable as the hotel of the same name, which is perched on the nearby hillside. Vast expanses of concrete open onto an intricate cooling system of glistening shallow water, insulating the cellar beneath which stores thousands of vintage bottles of wine. The trickling water is scattered with rocks of varying sizes, representing the different types of stone found throughout the vineyard. You will take part in a 90-minute tour, which includes an introduction to the vineyard and an overview of the production methods. Towards the end of the tour you will descend into the cellar and tasting room, where you can sample some of the finest wines in the world. Varieties produced here include syrah, cabernet sauvignon, carmenere and cabernet franc.
