Great Bear Lodge is located around 50 miles from Port Hardy, set within a tranquil inlet in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest. Floating on the water and surrounded by dense forest and mountains, it’s a remote and immersive setting, designed to offer one of the most authentic wildlife experiences in coastal British Columbia.
Access is part of the experience, with a floatplane transfer from Port Hardy bringing you directly to the lodge. From the moment you arrive, the focus is on getting out into the wilderness, with daily guided excursions by boat or on foot to nearby estuaries and river systems where wildlife is most active.
Stays are typically offered as four or six night all-inclusive packages, and follow a well-paced structure designed to maximise time out in the field. Days generally include morning and afternoon bear viewing sessions, with additional guided activities such as interpretive rainforest walks or boat excursions in between. The exact itinerary remains flexible, allowing guides to adapt plans based on weather and wildlife movements.
The experience changes subtly through the season. In spring, bears are often seen grazing along estuary edges, with excellent opportunities for photography from boats. During the summer months, sightings can be a little more varied as bears move between feeding areas, while late August through to October is considered the prime time, when salmon runs bring high concentrations of bears to the rivers, often viewed from purpose-built platforms at close range.
Wildlife extends well beyond bears, with regular sightings of black bears, bald eagles, otters and seals, and the occasional glimpse of more elusive species such as wolves or pine martens. All excursions are led by experienced guides, often wildlife biologists, who provide insight into both the animals and the wider ecosystem.
The lodge itself is intentionally simple, with just nine guest rooms to keep the experience personal and low-impact. Each room has a private bathroom and views over the surrounding water and forest, while the communal areas provide a relaxed space to unwind, with shared dining, an extensive library and a deck overlooking the inlet.
With accommodation, meals, guiding, equipment and floatplane transfers all included, it’s a seamless and highly immersive way to experience one of Canada’s most wildlife-rich regions, with very little to think about beyond what might appear around the next corner.
