Canyoning in Oman

Oman is the perfect place to strap on your walking boots and wend your way into the depths of the mountains, but for those looking for more of a challenge then canyoning is the place to start. Snake Gorge in the heart of the Wadi Bani Awf, up in the mountains near Nizwa just south of Muscat, and Al Hayer Falls near the pools at Wadi Bani Khalid further east of Muscat, are the two principal places to experience the best canyoning in Oman. An exciting journey through Oman's natural waterpark involves canyoning, trekking, swimming, abseiling, jumping off rocks into freshwater pools and hiking through the narrow and winding pathways. This is definitely an excursion more suited to active adrenaline-loving clients, but no prior experience of canyoning is required – all you need is a good sense of adventure! We can arrange this excursion either from Muscat or work it into an itinerary while you are staying in the mountains or on the coastal road near Sur.

Jabreen Fort

Located about an hour deeper into the interior than Nizwa, Jabreen is perhaps the best fort in Oman to visit. As with most forts, the ramparts and buildings have been painstakingly restored to exactly how they would have appeared when first built over 300 years ago. There are the usual collections of weapons and day-to-day household items that give a sense of how the fort’s occupants lived, but what marks Jabreen out is its ceilings, where the wooden beams have been intricately painted with simple and beautiful designs which have survived the passage of time in wonderful condition.

Mountain Walking

Whether it’s gentle strolls out from the mountain hotels to enjoy the scenery or a more serious and dizzying hike deep into the mountains, there is plenty of walking to be had in the Jebel Akhdar region. There are marked trails in many places, but for the more serious hikes a guide may be needed. Perhaps the most famous hike is the Jebel Shams/Wadi Ghul rim walk. The path clings, seemingly impossibly, to the sheer slope immediately under the rim of the canyon, and wends its way round to what must have been the most inaccessible village in Arabia before it was abandoned: the only access was either via this six-hour round walk, or a rope slung over the canyon side!
