Your tailor-made holiday will be as unique as you are. These itineraries are just a starting point, a bit of inspiration to show what’s possible. Your own trip all starts with a conversation with our Tanzania experts, who’ll take the time to understand what matters most to you and design the perfect Tanzania holiday to match.
Combining the Ruaha and Nyere National Parks, this itinerary provides some of the best wildlife and most authentic safari experiences in Africa. Often overlooked for the better known northern circuit, Tanzania’s southern circuit feels remote and wild, and is extremely rewarding.
Nyere National Park is Africa’s largest National Park and previously known as the Selous Game Reserve. This vast forested reserve has immense biodiversity and one of the highlights is the mighty Rufiji River which feeds palm-fringed lakes and streams which is the focus for boat trips. Together with some outstanding opportunities for walking safaris, plus game drives, Nyere provides the most varied wildlife activities of anywhere in Tanzania.
In contract to the lakes and river system of Nyere, Ruaha is far more arid with impressive baobab trees and the rugged Ruaha escarpment to the north. These differences offer a unique and varied combination of wildlife that fuses east with south: elephants, buffalo and hippos as well as lesser and greater kudu, sable and roan. Both parks have a strong wildlife population meaning that predators are thriving, with regular sightings of lion and leopard and, if lucky, the endangered African wild dog. Bird life between the parks is also seriously impressive, with hundreds of species easily spotted.
This southern circuit is easily accessible by light aircraft transfer from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar is also very easy to add on before or after should you want to include some beach time either side of your safari adventure.
Here's a summary of what you might get up to day-to-day on this Tanzania holiday. As always, this is just an idea. Every single day of your trip will be tailored to suit you.
Fly Overnight to Dar es Salaam.
You will be met on arrival at the airport and taken to your city hotel by private vehicle and driver where you can rest after your international flights. This is by no means a must and you can continue straight to your safari but, in our experience a day of rest works wonders and you get on safari ready to hit the ground running.
You will be picked up this morning and taken to the airport for your light aircraft flight to Nyere. This takes just 45 minutes and you get a great view of the tall borassus palms and the mighty rufiji river as you come into land. You will be met at the airstrip and then game drive to your lodge for lunch. You can settle in and relax and then head out on an afternoon safari activity.
You have three full days to explore the incredible landscapes and seek the diverse wildlife that surrounds you during your stay in the National Park.
You will enjoy morning and afternoon game drives and safari activities where you can go in search of lion, leopard and wild dog. You are also sure to see much of the plains wildlife while on safari, including elephant, buffalo and giraffe as well as impala, warthog and much more.
We really love mixing the activities up and would suggest a morning walking safari one day, where the focus is on some of the smaller wildlife, plant and tree life, as well as an afternoon boat safari where you will see some of the larger animals and incredible birdlife of the reserve.
