Overview
For us a “classic” trip is one that incorporates the major highlights, but also allows a little time for relaxation and includes one or two lesser-known destinations or activities to give you a more rounded experience of Costa Rica.
The Arenal Volcano region is included on most first-time visits to the country – though the volcano itself is not always visible, the wide range of hotels here and Arenal’s central location make it a convenient and affordable base to try some of Costa Rica’s most popular activities. We also recommend including some time in the cloud forest on a classic trip – Monteverde has the best range of hotels and activities to choose from (and it is the best place to try canopy zip lining), but quieter options are also available. To complete your trip you could add another wildlife region, a beach stay or both of these options if you have a full two weeks to spend in Costa Rica.
