Renowned by scientists and bird watching enthusiasts across the world, the 60 kilometres of forest trails attached to the biological research station at La Selva host an astonishing number of bird, plant and mammal species, with leading international researchers coming to study here. The well-maintained trails are accessible to day visitors as part of a guided tour, and it is those with a love of birds who will particular enjoy a visit to the reserve. Over 450 species of bird have been recorded here, and notable spots include the snowy cotinga, red-capped manakin and the great green macaw.
