Situated on a beautiful and pristine stretch of powder-white sand, looking out over crystal-clear turquoise waters, The Secret Garden is a dreamlike island escape that we would all happily live in. The hotel itself though is a no-frills, barefoot luxury affair though: this is being shipwrecked with a minifridge, rather than a millionaire’s private mansion. Rooms are simple, with Scandi-style modern décor, cooled with air-conditioning and boasting outdoor jungle showers – just the right level of home comforts, without taking away from the feeling of being away from civilisation.

Although Pagoda beach – on which The Secret Garden sits – also has a few other similar boutique offerings, this is our favourite option. The staff are attentive, the beach manicured, the food and drinks in the humble restaurant are delicious and fairly priced, and the vibe of the resort allows you to forget that you have a real life to be returning to soon. Couples can upgrade to beachfront rooms that sit at the far-end of the sands, giving privacy and unspoilt views of the sea, and families will enjoy the option of having separate rooms for the kids, and plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained.
