Sol Bungalows, Mai Chau

Quite literally in the middle of the paddy fields, close to a bamboo forest and nestled below mountainous peaks, is Sol Bungalows – a joint venture between Hanoian Vietnamese businessmen and the local ethnic White Thai villagers. It enjoys the most privileged setting and is our favourite place to stay in the region.

Accommodation is spread between the main rooms with shared balconies, but the best views over the rice fields, and bungalows in the garden each with a private balcony, offering views across a valley of carpeted rice paddies. There are Deluxe and Family bungalows, each built with brick, stone and terracotta tiles. All have comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold shower, air-conditioning, flat screen TVs and mini bars.

Authentic food will have pride of place at "Place de la Sol", the restaurant enjoying the best un-interrupted views to the high mountains. Please note that meals do need to be pre-ordered at the restaurant and it is best to do this on arrival as they only stock the ingredients required. You can also enjoy a traditional dance show in the evening, or if this doesn't take your fancy head to the outside terrace to watch the sun set over the valley.
