Dim Sum & Street Art

Immerse yourself in local life on a unique tour of Penang. Start with a morning stroll along the busy streets to Chow Rasta. This wet market has been in operation since the early 1800s and is the perfect place to observe daily life. Watch as housewives and chefs haggle with the vendors for the freshest food and learn about the daily market culture of Penang. Continue through the streets to a Chinese café where you will dine alongside crowds of Penangites to sample the city’s best dim sum. Your guide will help you to pick a selection of delicious dishes and explain to you the culinary traditions and dining etiquette as you chow down. Switch gears, shifting from Penang’s culinary art scene to its more artistic side. Head to Georgetown, Penang’s cultural centre and a UNESCO world heritage site. Explore the streets, looking beyond the heritage buildings and religious sites to scope out the remarkable masterpieces adorning shophouses and alleyways. Whimsical paintings, sculptures and interactive murals are inspired by daily life. Along the way learn about the commissioning of one of Penang’s largest street art collections. There are a number of pop up galleries that may also be visited, some of which hold excellent weekend flea markets.

Tropical Spice Garden Cooking Class

Be mesmerised by the unique uses of exotic plants and herbs on an introductory tour of the Tropical Spice Garden before partaking in a cooking class to cook tasty Malay, Nonya and Indian cuisine. Learn all about the unique Peranakan culture a blend of Malay and Chinese traditions. The morning begins with a transfer to the Spice Garden before a guided tour of the Spice Terraces to explore the lush landscaped award-winning gardens set out over eight acres of secondary jungle before enjoying a refreshment of tea served in the Bamboo Garden. Tucked away in a secluded corner of the gardens, the cooking school is surrounded by jungle trees and wildlife, a small herb garden and a glimpse of the Andaman Sea. Next begin the cooking class to create a selection of tasty Malay, Nyonya and/or Indian cuisine with the help of professional chefs. Peranakan or Nyonya cuisine is a unique combination of Chinese, Malay and other influences. Peranakans are descendants of early Chinese migrants who settled in Penang, Malacca, Indonesia and Singapore, inter-marrying with local Malays. The old Malay word “nyonya” a term of respect and affection for women of prominent social standing (part “madame” and part “auntie”), has since been the name of the cuisine of the Peranakans. Nonya cooking is the result of blending Chinese ingredients with various distinct spices and cooking techniques used by the Malay/Indonesian community. This gives rise to Peranakan interpretations of Malay/Indonesian food that is similarly tangy, aromatic, spicy and herbal. Mix this with traditional Malay style cooking and the influence of Indian cuisine encompassing a wide variety of regional cuisines native to India resulting in a delightful selection of dishes to enjoy for lunch on the patio.

Self Guided Georgetown

Explore Penang under your own steam without a guide. An easy city to navigate with an excellent Georgetown Heritage Trail, the city is best discovered on foot. The trail will take you past some of the largest colonial buildings in South East Asia. Visit Fort Cornwallis, built in 1808 marking the spot where Sir Francis Light (the founder of the British Colony of Penang) first landed on the island. Stroll down the Street of Harmony to visit the Mahamariaman Indian Temple, the Anglican Church, Kuan Yin Chinese Temple and the Kepitan Keling Mosque. Another highlight is the Khoo Kongsi, a beautiful Chinese mansion. Finally walk along the narrow clan jetties billed as one of the last bastions of old Chinese settlements on the island, home to the stilted homes of various Chinese clans. The Chew Jetty is a highlight with the longest walkway and home to an inviting temple along the way. The street art around Penang will be sure to catch your eye as you stroll the jalans. These masterpieces are now iconic in Penang and make fantastic photo stops.
