Wherever you turn in Morocco you’re confronted with its history and almost every trip will incorporate some history, even if it’s just walking around the ancient souqs of Marrakesh.

But for those with a real interest in history, there is so much to see and do. Somewhere like Fez is amazing, as much of the town – the layout, the lack of vehicles, the buildings – are unchanged for centuries. Berber tribes have left their mark in the numerous kasbahs, some crumbling, some proudly restored, that litter the valleys of the south. Even the Romans got in on the act, with Voloubilis and Rabat’s Chellah both being former Roman settlements. There’s European influence, especially in the Portuguese and French military architecture of Atlantic ports like Essaouira and El Jadida. There’s so much to choose from, the problem will be deciding what to include and what to leave out!
