Established in 1954, Gal Oya National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful and untouched protected areas. It lies in the southeast of the island, approximately three hours east from Kandy, two hours from Passikudah and three hours north of Yala. Due to its location it’s remained almost entirely undeveloped.  The park encompasses the country’s largest inland body of water, the Senanayake Samudraya Lake. It’s here where boat safaris can be enjoyed, with the chance of seeing wild elephant and numerous birds. Sometimes it’s possible to see wild elephants swimming to the lake’s small islands, an unforgettable experience.

As well as boat safaris, it’s also possible to enjoy jeep safaris and walking safari. It’s also one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see the Veddas, the indigenous people of Sri Lanka. We feel Gal Oya is ideally suited to those looking to get off-the-beaten-track. It’s a true wilderness experience and best visited during May to September, although it is a year-round destination.
