Hiking at Cuicocha Lake

Hike roughly ten miles with your guide to circumnavigate the spectacular lake at Cuicocha. Originally formed by a volcanic crater, it is a breathtaking site. Although the towering volcano of Cotacachi is extinct, there are deep fissures in the rocks below which means the bubbling gasses can be seen emerging from the water. The two islands within the lake have been formed by resurgent volcanoes. The walk is easy to moderate and takes up to six hours. It is important to note that the walk will be at an altitude of 3000-3400 metres, so it can feel more challenging at this height.

Teleferico Cable Car

For spectacular views over Quito take the teleferico or cable car. Built over an area of over 160 hectares on the outskirts of Pichincha, the cable car reaches heights of 4050 metres at the summit of Cruz Loma. Quito is surrounded by dramatic mountainous and volcanic landscapes, so on a clear day you are rewarded with sights of more than fourteen peaks. There is a development with cafes, shops and even an amusement park at the site.

Equator Line

Quito falls just twenty miles south of the equator line separating the hemispheres. Today you will visit the Middle of the World Museum and monument with your guide, where you can straddle both the northern and southern hemispheres. The monument was built during the 17th Century, when a French expedition defined the precise location.

Cuicocha Lake

You will visit the spectacular Cuicocha Lake with your guide. Originally formed by a volcanic crater, it is a breathtaking site. Historic Tour of Quito

Your guide and driver will meet you for a tour of the city. You will begin with a panoramic view of Alameda Park and the Basilica, followed by a walk down the street of seven crosses. The tour will focus on the historic centre of Quito, one of the first areas to be declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. Some of the highlights of the pretty cobbled streets include Independence Square, the presidential palace, cathedral and gold-plated La Compania Church and grand San Francisco Plaza.

Tren Ecuador & Tren Crucero

Ecuador’s rail network has recently been revitalised and restored to a high standard; the Tren Ecuador now offers infrequent day trips from Quito to Cotapaxi, Matchani and Latacunga. Another 30 kilometre, six hour ‘Libertad’ route from Ibarra to Salinas in the Otavalo region, and a ‘Devil’s Nose’ switchback route in the Avenue of Volcanoes. If you have an interest in rail travel the experience can be wonderful, but the service is primarily aimed at the tourist market rather than offering viable ways to get from A to B. The exception is the Tren Crucero, with three night journeys in luxury from Quito to the coastal city of Guayaquil. Although appealing, it is worth noting that the route bypasses the colonial city of Cuenca, which is a real shame as it is one of the highlights of mainland Ecuador.
