Hotel overview

A quirky converted colonial style house, with a fantastic location in central Riobamba. It is just a short walk from the Cathedral, train station and central attractions making it a great place to explore from by foot. Owned by an enthusiastic and friendly British and Peruvian couple, the renovations have taken place over many years with a loving attention to detail and the hotel now occupies two buildings to accommodate more guests.

The exterior, central courtyards and restaurants are particularly special and have been beautifully restored. Locals and visitors mix in the restaurant, which has gained quite a name for itself in the local area. The unique rooms are perfectly adequate, if a little oddly furnished with an interesting colour scheme!

Excursion

Ingapirca

Located in the Cañar province, two hours’ from Cuenca and three and a half hours' from Riobamba, Ingapirca is one of the most important archaeological sites in Ecuador. The ruins can be dated back to the 15th century and the site was originally used by the indigenous Cañaris as an observatory. Once the Incas arrived the site became a prominent religious and administrative centre as well as a fortress, before being dismantled by the Spanish to build nearby villages. The vast complex includes a roofless fortification, courtyards, terraces, temples and a castle. There is a small museum at the site with archaeological and ethnographic displays.

Historic Riobamba

Explore the history and culture of colonial Riobamba with your guide; Monasterio de las Conceptas, Parque Maldonado and the Cathedral are some of the most interesting attractions in this charming town. Riobamaba is historically significant in relation to Ecuador’s independence, as this was where the first constitution was signed in 1830.

Nariz del Diablo ('Devil's Nose')

The Nariz del Diablo or Devil’s Nose is one of the most famous train journeys in Ecuador. Known as one of the most difficult railways to construct in the world, the tracks switchback through the steep slopes of the Andes. The construction hit particular difficulty when builders reached the vertical Devil’s Nose rock, which was zig-zagged around so the train could pass. The train now only operates as a tourist service - while the organised nature of entertainment and souvenir shops may not be to everyone’s tastes, it cannot be denied that it is a great feat of engineering.

Hiking at Cuicocha Lake

Hike roughly ten miles with your guide to circumnavigate the spectacular lake at Cuicocha. Originally formed by a volcanic crater, it is a breathtaking site. Although the towering volcano of Cotacachi is extinct, there are deep fissures in the rocks below which means the bubbling gasses can be seen emerging from the water. The two islands within the lake have been formed by resurgent volcanoes. The walk is easy to moderate and takes up to six hours. It is important to note that the walk will be at an altitude of 3000-3400 metres, so it can feel more challenging at this height.
