Iceberg Quest Ocean Tours is a classic Newfoundland boat trip, blending big coastal scenery with the excitement of searching for icebergs and whales in the waters around Twillingate. Out on the Atlantic, you’ll get a front-row view of the natural drama that plays out here each year, with the chance to see ancient ice on the move and wildlife feeding close to shore.
The best time for icebergs is typically late spring into early summer, when bergs drifting down from Greenland are most commonly seen off the coast. Whale sightings build through the summer months, with humpbacks often feeding in these rich waters, and seabirds adding even more energy to the scene throughout the season. In early summer you can sometimes get the magic combination of both icebergs and whales on the same trip, while later in summer the focus often shifts more towards whales and coastal wildlife.
The experience is narrated throughout, with a strong local flavour that makes it feel like more than just a sightseeing cruise. Expect stories, humour, and plenty of Newfoundland character, often accompanied by traditional music as you travel. For those who want to lean fully into the culture, there’s even the option to do a “screech-in” at sea (additional cost), a playful local tradition that adds an extra layer to the experience.
As with any nature-based experience, wildlife and iceberg sightings can’t be guaranteed, and shoulder-season trips are more weather dependent, but Twillingate is one of Newfoundland’s most iconic places to head out on the water in search of both.
